White Sox roster changes in '09?

The White Sox's 2009 roster could feature Clayton Richard in the starting rotation and injured Jose Contreras working as a reliever if he's healthy. As for the prospect of adding much-needed speed to the lineup, manager Ozzie Guillen was reluctant to address the topic. "We need speed, but they have to have talent," Guillen said before the Sox beat Tampa Bay 5-3 Sunday to extend their American League Division Series. "I know I would like to see some more speed. But when you talk about speed, you can't talk about nine rabbits. You can't." The Sox plan to return injured Carlos Quentin to the third spot in the batting order. Quentin was not activated for the ALDS but ripped line drives Sunday in pregame batting practice. Designated hitter Jim Thome, right fielder Jermaine Dye and first baseman Paul Konerko all have various forms of no-trade rights, making a total team makeover unlikely. But with third baseman Joe Crede and shortstop Orlando Cabrera destined for free agency, the Sox could feature a new left side of the infield, with Alexei Ramirez moving from second base to shortstop. The Sox could add speed at third and/or second base with players who could hit at the top or bottom of the order. Arizona second baseman Orlando Hudson is a free agent, and speedy and versatile Angels infielder Chone Figgins is arbitration eligible. Figgins would be nice O-Hud would O-K... But we have plenty of speed in Jerry Owens, and Josh Fields is more than ready to take over 3B. Now that leaves 2B... Too be bad they traded Danny Richar.

Of course if you didn't make it, every team wants to get better....

DO NOT trade Joe Crede.

October 6, 2008  09:26 AM ET

get the OC out of there. never liked the guy and he obviously doesn't fit in with the clubhouse(check interviews throughout the year about him). and bye bye joe. two things. his agent is a d0uchebag. and his back acts up worse than a spoiled rich girl. he's doing, what exactly in the playoffs? oh, nothing. phew, money well spent. love his passion, his fielding, his clutch hitting but...looks like if we want to see that, we gotta hang out with marty mcfly and go back in time to see it. he'll want too much $, and its too risky.

October 6, 2008  09:29 AM ET

GIMY a break. Crede is the best clutch hitter the Sox have. It would be a mistake if they get rid of him.

October 6, 2008  09:44 AM ET

maybe they should start with a new manager??

Danny Richar was nothing! Thank god he is gone. Look at what we gave up for him, Aaron Cunninghame is already playing for the A's. He could have been plugged into centerfield for the Sox already.

Speaking of Crede....where is he? IMO, they need to cut him loose. Isn't he represented my Scott Borass? If so...he gone!

I can see Chris Getz taking over 2nd base next year.
I don't think that Fields will just be given the job at third, nor Owens in center.
Fields strikes out way too much, and seems to be injured constantly, sound like any other 3rd baseman you know? (not the striking out part)
In the next few years, look for infielder Gordon Beckham, the Sox' 1st round pick this year, to come up with the Sox and play 3rd or 2nd base.

I agree, when his loud mouth crub going to stop, he needs to slow down a lil when he rants, makes it super hard to undertand that gibberish coming outta his mouth.

GO SUX! (not really hence the spelling)

Josh Fields will play third base, Alexei Ramirez will move to short stop (his natural position, Juan Uribe will play second base until 2008 first round pick Gordon Beckham is ready, first base is solid with Paul Konerko and Nick Swisher, now for the out field, right field will be played by Jermaine Dye, center field will be played by Dewayne Wise Or Jerry Owens and left field will be played by Carlos Quentin, the catchers are A.J. Pierzynski and Toby Hall, DH will be Jim Thome, there are no problems on the south side.

Start out by getting rid of A.S.S.I.E GUILLEN....WHAT A JOKE OF A MANAGER, AND ALL OF HIS FOLLOWERS!!

didn't bother to read the article because I don't care about the white sox, but judging from all the red linked names, they're apparently planning to sign every single player in baseball during their starting-right-now-offseason?
