A coming-out party might be a stretch, but to say things got a whole lot better for Jermaine O'Neal on his final day of camp wouldn't be. O'Neal slowly has been rounding into form this week, but it wasn't until he busted loose in the fourth quarter of yesterday's intrasquad scrimmage for eight points, capped off by a thunderous dunk over Kris Humphries, that fans, teammates and media alike finally got to see what Bryan Colangelo's key off-season acquisition is capable of. "Today was the first day that I really kind of put everything together and really felt comfortable with the flow of the offence and also just finding my way," O'Neal said. "I think guys did a great job of looking for me and also each other on offence. But this is just one small step towards where we need to be. We are not there yet but we're getting pretty close." O'Neal also likes the progress he and Chris Bosh are making as they learn to work together in close confines and bring out the best in each other.

If healthy- and that's a BIG if.......
it is a formidable front-line and should - if they can pick up
some back court help make a playoff run

If he keeps playing this way they'll give him a Raptors uniform soon.

O'Neal and Bosh is a great combination. I'd like to see this work out. This could be a really good front court.

October 6, 2008  10:25 AM ET

O'Neal is just average now at best. The raptors aren't that good. yeah they made the playoffs in the weak **** east but they need a better front office. They can't keep drafting guys like Bargnani if they want to contend. Getting O'Neal to play with Bosch is a step in the right direction but I think in the long run it might be 1 step forward 2 steps back.....on a side note we need to teach the Canadians how to spell offense.

That isn't true-
In the weakest position in the league (all-around)
a HEALTHY (and I keep repeating IF healthy)
What starting center - in the east- other than Howard is better?
He is WAY more than an average center

they need defensive help... a LOT of defensive help... because they sure as hell can shoot 3s to stay in a game, but when it comes to playing any kind of defense whatsoever... well, they can't. That's why they keep losing. Bargnani just adds to the 3-point capability... as does Bosh, and of course Kopono is the best at it. But they need D... that's all they're missing.

offence (noun)
5 definitions

1: the action of attacking an enemy [syn: offense, offensive]
2: the team that has the ball (or puck) and is trying to score [syn: offense] [ant: defense, defense]

We need to teach the Americans how to spell Bosh. Bargnani is only 22, give him another year or two. The Raptors front office is the best we have had in our franchise short history. We've drafted the likes of Damon Stoudamire, Marcus Camby, Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter, Morris Peterson and Chris Bosh. We also drafted a few duds but which team hasn't?

October 6, 2008  12:45 PM ET

If he is healthy, O'Neal, Bosh and Bargnani will be a formidable front line.

Toronto may have something good brewing if O'Neal is healthy and is willing to play hard.

October 6, 2008  01:15 PM ET

Key word IF, I have my doubts, but have always liked Jermaine.

October 6, 2008  01:25 PM ET

O???Neal and Bosh together sound great but O???Neal is not the key to put them in the category of being a contender in the east. Yeah they'll win games but still can't touch Orlando, Detroit, Boston and even Cleveland. They need a good shooting guard and a solid point guard to go along with Bosh and O'neal such as a Ginobili or Chauncy Billups would be a great fit, Mike Milleror or Richard Hamilton would make them stronger but not really convince with what they have right now on their roster.

October 6, 2008  01:37 PM ET

Yeah i can only agree with what is being said because O'Neal is legit when he is healthy. He will be a #2 best C in the east behind Howard if he is healthy. If he stays healthy he will make the All Star team alongside Chris Bosh. Have the Raps ever had 2 all stars. I cant remember.

October 6, 2008  01:46 PM ET

We'll see. Even if he does play great I don't think Toronto has the players on the perimeter to really be dangerous.

October 6, 2008  01:51 PM ET

O'Neal is exactly what the Raps need... a tough player who can block shots, rebound and contribute in scoring. The Raps have NEVER had a legit centre... they had Antonio Davis (a smallish type-although extremely hard-working) but no one close to O Neal's ability. Yes, obviously the question is health... but what did Colangelo give up? They gave up an injury riddled and selfish TJ Ford... a back up in nesterovic and a 1st rounder (Hibbert) who noone is raving about currently. So, it was a great move to give the Raps a tougher interior offensively and defensively.

O'Neal just needs to get his body in game shape & work hard in his conditioning. Some of his nick nack injuries are the result of not being in optimal condition for the rigors of an 82 game season. Plus he played hurt and put off getting treatment. Mostly, I think his injuries may have been more psycho-somatic. If his mind is right, his body will follow.. I like his game & I'm hoping he makes it back to form...

Wow, a T&R were almost all of us agree. Let's mark this and put it in our "favorites".

October 6, 2008  06:34 PM ET

Toronto could be a very good team and even a contender for the title if they stay healthy. They have one of the best young offensive PG's in the league in Jose Calderon, they have been one of the best perimeter shooting teams for the past few years, and could put a starting lineup on the floor with 6'11" O'Neal, 6'11" Chris Bosh, and 7' Bargnani at the 3. Both Bosh and O'neal are decent interior defenders. they'd be similar in size with the Lakers potential front line but with an obvouly different team makeup.

Americans know how to spell Bosh... and we need to teach Canadians how to spell offenSe and defenSe.

Since when does playing against Kris Humphries constitute a good test of your NBA skills?
