According to Gotham Baseball magazine's Web site, the Yankees are rumored to be interested in the Devil Rays' slugging 1B Carlos Pena and could make pitcher Sean Henn available, though not bay area product Tyler Clippard. If the Yankees can't get Pena they could pursue Ty Wigginton.

WOW. Finally a sensible idea. Another lefty, decent power and they wouldn't have to give up Hughes or Tabata. I hope that they make this move.

June 20, 2007  10:17 AM ET

D-rays beware, Henn is garbage.

June 20, 2007  11:08 AM ET

Does it matter?

Best of luck on the Wild Card...

9 Games out and counting...

Wasn't Pena a Yankee last year?

June 20, 2007  11:33 AM ET

Nevermind. He was in Boston.

June 20, 2007  11:40 AM ET

before he went to boston , he was playing for the yankees AAA team .. but it will be a good pick up , he has nice defense, decent power (25-30 homers)... and a good eye ...

June 20, 2007  11:41 AM ET

And BTW he is CHEAP.... Pena for HEnn uff... that's a very very very good deal ... HENN IS GARBAGE.

June 20, 2007  12:05 PM ET

Boston fans never learn. These are the same guys who will be whining about payroll when they find themselves finishing second .... again.

boo

June 20, 2007  12:20 PM ET

Henn is not garbage, let's call him a work in progress.

June 20, 2007  12:24 PM ET

Bad time to trade for Pena, he's nothing more than a below average first baseman, but if they can get him for Henn it's certainly worth it. Anything more--especially Clippard--and definitely not.

BobBoston: Yeah it was 14 1/2 two weeks ago. The choke is coming, prepare yourself. Not even at the all star break yet Einstein.

June 20, 2007  12:41 PM ET

Carlos Pena is at best a bench player, he's on a streak now that I don't know is possible. Leave him to be. Trade him and the streak will stop.

June 20, 2007  12:53 PM ET

I don't see it happening. The D-Rays are better than their record shows and their current infield is producing just fine: Pena, Upton, Harris, Iwamura. I can't see them breaking that up, especially having Wiggington as the perfect guy to cover 1B or 3B, if necessary, unless they're trading for a proven starter.

Besides, as much as I hate to belabor this point, the truth is the Yankees need pitching more than anything else.

14.5 two weeks ago, came down to 7.5 and now it's up to 9. Face it, your nitrous tank is empty. You blew it on a 9 game winning streak and now you are on a road trip vs. 3 crappy teams. You're road trip percentage isn't the greatest so let's see if you can win on the road before you try predicting the future.

But hey, even if you make the WC that's okay. I just keep looking at A-Rod's post season stats and I get all warm and fuzzy inside.

June 20, 2007  01:06 PM ET

Uh lakersloser, the Yankees won 4 world titles in 5 years thanks to products from their farm system ... Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Bernie Williams, Pettitte, etc.

Want current examples from the past few years? Cano, Cabrera, Phil Hughes ... yeah, they traded for A-Rod, picked up Damon, Giambi and others through free agency. Find me a major league team that hasn't gone the free agent route.
