Why Jet is appealing Boldin hit

As expected, Jets safety Eric Smith yesterday officially appealed his one-game suspension for his hit on Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin. The appeal will be heard today by the NFL office. Smith was fined $50,000 (a week's pay) and suspended for Sunday's game against the Bengals for his helmet-to-helmet hit that injured Boldin. His appeal to the league will be based on the fact that Boldin was knocked forward from a hit from behind by teammate Kerry Rhodes just before Smith made contact, that it was a bang-bang play, he had no malicious intention and he has no prior history of dirty play. Coach Eric Mangini said he expects the league to rule on the issue by later today.

You got knocked the funk out man!

October 7, 2008  05:16 AM ET

This was an accident but Goodell needs to set the precedence that you cant lead with your head.

October 7, 2008  06:12 AM ET

He left his feet and dove at the receiver. The ruling stands. And rightfully so. Everyone involved is just lucky that it was not worse. That was nasty.

October 7, 2008  07:00 AM ET

There are many ways to safely hit a receiver in the air. That hit wasn't one of them.

October 7, 2008  07:46 AM ET

I didn't see it. How bad was Bolden hurt?

October 7, 2008  07:48 AM ET

Smith's transgression wasn't where he struck Bolding. His mistake was the instrument with which he hit him. He used his helmet as a weapon and he is getting a punishment that fits his crime.

Broken sinus I believe. I think he'll be back next week or the week after.

This hit looked bad, Bolden's arm was twitching, it looked like all of his muscles locked up.

October 7, 2008  08:15 AM ET

HOOAH! 4-1...I saw it. It was that bad....One of those times when you really think a guy is seriously hurt...It was a cheap shot near the end of a game that was over . The Jets had a huge lead at the time..He left his feet running full speed and led with his helmet..one game suspension is mild. He got off easy.

October 7, 2008  09:25 AM ET

It wasn't even that serious. You clearly see that he didn't even try to lead with the helmet. His teammate pushed his head into Boldin.

October 7, 2008  09:53 AM ET

I don't know. I've watched the hit several times on my X Large HD Plasma unit.

Contact was made for sure. Avoidable contact? Only if he walks up and trys to use harsh language on the guy.

Watch the Ravens get fired up for a game and you will see each and every one of them trying to rev up to deliver just that sort of hit. Of course the helmet to helmet would not be part of the plan but stuff happens.

If Smith doesn't attempt to hit Boldon like he did he's probably going to be employed elsewhere in the not too distant future.

And I think the monetary fine is proportionally too huge. Would a higher paid DB get fined in the same take home pay proportions?

October 7, 2008  10:40 AM ET

its not going to overturned, take a week off, have a couple of beers and watch the game.. the get ready for next week. they aren't going to need him as they are playing the bengals this week..

October 7, 2008  11:13 AM ET

He should appeal the suspension. He didn't demonstrate an intent to injure, and plus I think Kerry Rhodes' hit to the back played a pretty big part in the injury as well. Papa Goddell fined Eric Smith 50 large, which is the equivalency of two game checks for him, and then slapped him with a one game suspension, another game check. This guy makes like $450,000 a year, he's not in the Ed Reed, Bob Sanders tax bracket of safeties. I feel he should have had the fine OR suspension and not both.

October 7, 2008  12:03 PM ET

I'm all for protecting players, but it's still football. Big hits are a part of the game. It seems like any time a player gets lit up lately and it leads to an injury, the NFL automatically fines the hitter. This guy had no malicious intent (other than to knock the heck out of Boldin which is what a safety is supposed to do) and has no history of dirty play. The NFL is sending the wrong message here.

OK. But you do not use a hit that was CLEARLY not intentional to do so! Making a point with the wrong example makes Goodell look like a moron.

Furthermore, I have seen the hit many times and it always looks as though the wrong man got fined to me. The defender who left his feet (launched) hit Boldin from behind. The second hit (bang, bang) was the guy who got fined and while he thrust himself forward to make the hit, where was the "Launching" they keep talking about?? It was the first hit that lowered the WR down to the head on head level. Not a fan of either team or player but Goodell and the NFL has got this one completely wrong.

Why don't they just get the whole thing over with already and become the NFFL (National FLAG Football League)! Cause they sure are becoming the be afraid to hit anyone league cause you might lose a chunk of your pay. What a crock!

October 7, 2008  12:39 PM ET

First of all...the Jets were winning 56 - 35 and the hit happened as the game was about to end. I understand you want to play at full speed all the time but so what if Bolden scored....score would have been 56 - 42. Jets still would have won....D-Head just wanted to make the ESPN highlight reel.

What an idiot. I saw the hit...should have never happened. Suspend him.

"I understand you want to play at full speed all the time but so what if Bolden scored....score would have been 56 - 42. Jets still would have won....D-Head just wanted to make the ESPN highlight reel."

Why so Serious?,
You play hard all the time...the second you stop playing hard, thats when you get yourslef injured. Also, this guy isn't a pro-bowler, he's not even a starter...he's trying to show the coaches that he's a quality Saftey that can hit hard and make a difference on the field.

The hit wasn't dirty...it would have been a clean hit if Rhodes didn't hit him from behind a split second before Smith made contact.
If you watch the hit you'll realize that without Kerry Rhodes' interference, it just would have been a vicious hit. If it wasn't intentional, then why is this guy being punished like it was?

October 7, 2008  01:01 PM ET

He can get some pointers from Plaxico on how to spend his week off.

October 7, 2008  01:30 PM ET

Hey the man made a mistake it's on cam how can you fight what everyone saw. suck it up take the time off to reflex your playing ability and come back stronger

October 7, 2008  01:58 PM ET

Lets get these guys too-too's or something.. I agree on this one but if you start limiting the hits in the sport you may as well watch soccer...
