Burnett won't be on market long

With CC Sabathia expected to land in California, A.J. Burnett will have the rest of the country to pick from. Burnett is expected to opt out of the final two years and $24 million with the Blue Jays. And like Sabathia, Burnett doesn't want to be shoveling snow in Maryland without knowing where he will pitch in 2009. "If he does [opt out], it's not something that is going to take all winter long," agent Darek Braunecker said yesterday. Since the Yankees are hell-bent on adding a No. 1 starter, Burnett is certainly attractive. More so with Sabathia favoring his native California.

He is more along the lines of a luxury for the Yankees. If Mussina doesn't retire, he is unneeded. However first base is a necessity at this point.

Congratulations Rebecca,, Cat & RSB... you guys who root for the Red Sox can go fly a kite.
Go Tampa Bay!

It's not an either or issue. the yankees are going to reduce their payroll and have money to spend and still keep it under the current amount, at the end of the season, shich has already happened for them. So Yes, Tex and a top named pitcher, who I don't know, of course burnett is one or CC or lowe, Peavy, etc. It's the term of these contracts they have to worry about. the last 1B of the yankees was signed for 6 years. He hit plenty of HR but defense and average was N/G. Long term on pitchers? Santana got what, 138 mil over 6 years? Or was that Zito, either way it's ridiculous. geeez the money they get today!

This guy can't stay healthy and the only team he beats consistantly is the Yankees. I'd be weary of a guy injured as often as him turning it on down the stretch of a year he can opt out and cash in. Stay away from Ben Sheets as well.
Get a Lowe type guy or two.

congratulations to all red sox fans on this big win. The rays are young and some say way to inexperienced to deliver in such an atmosphere, but we all shall see.

Thanks jc, I think.GO RED SOX!!!!

Cat this not the time to think. (can Red Sox fans do that, any way?) I mean my congratulations sincerely but now will steel myself to root resolutely against your Pink Sox as they get trounced by the Rays.

Okay time for breakfast and then being on the phone for hours trying to get rid of a **** spyware thingy that has attached itself to my computer and is popping up constantly trying to sell me a bogus security program. Spent three hours yesterday on the phone with the techie and it is stils lhere. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!11!

I like Burnett and Lowe instead of CC, but I keep hearing Burnett is fragile and injury-prone. What's the deal on that?

Tony, does your space anus hurt this morning?

October 7, 2008  08:48 AM ET

He had a career year going into free agency and stayed healthy.....Coincidence?

LOL! for being at the bottom of the barrel for so many years, it feels good to finally, FINALLY be in the post season huh? One good season after years of sucking, and the bandwagoning Devil Rays fans act like they own the world! I can't hate on the Rays, it's about time that franchise did SOMETHING. But until the Rays win the World Series, they get no respect from me.

October 7, 2008  09:08 AM ET

riddle me this: I didn't see the end of the game but in the pciture on line and in the newspaper this AM of Bay sliding home it appears that the catcher is doing the infamous stand in front of the plate and sweep tag and that is stupid, insipid and totally not motionally effective. (motionally effective???) It is a fact that the ball comes to you faster than you can go get the ball and then try and move to make the out tag. Unless the throw was off line or something to that effect then the catcher is a dumbass. He gave himself little to no chance to make the play at home. When will the teachers of the game to those in the minors and the majors learn these men who wear the tools of ignorance the right way to defend home plate?

I give 'em credit for getting this far. People thought they'd cave under the post-season pressure but ... they keep plugging along. We don't want this to be a walk in the park ... we want some good excitement and riveting games. That being said ... GO RED SOX!!!!!!

no, no, no Cat always root for your team to come out in the first inning and score 9 runs and go on from there. Those exciting and riveting games can be played by some one else. that being said, come on Rays sweeep with scores of 19-0, 12-0 and 16-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You sound like you're in a wicked bad mood this morning ... :((

I ain't in the best mood but I do not suffer fools easily and I do not like when certain fools belittle other teams out of nasty spite and malice. I tease and I say stuff but i respect the Red Sox and I respect their good fans. I give credit where credit is due. (I am procrastinating being on the phone with the techies again. I fear another three to four hour phone call.)

And have you seen the Bernies' ad where Youkliss says wicked? Funny!

Forget Tex, forget CC, and I guess forget Burnett if he's as injury prone as everyone seems to say - goodbye Pettite, goodbye Melky, and hello Manny and Lowe in 2009! MannyLowe! "We can't smile, without you ... can't laugh without you ... if you only knew, what we're going through ... we just can't smiiiiiile, without you ..."

Ok I'll stop.
