Most baseball insiders believe that Mike Mussina is ready to take his 270 wins and ride off into the sunset. Of course, the only opinion that matters is Mussina's, and the pitcher hasn't spent much time thinking about his future since the Yankees' season ended nine days ago. Reached Monday at his home in Montoursville, Pa., Mussina told the Daily News that he is still undecided when it comes to playing next season.

1 more year probably....

October 7, 2008  07:55 AM ET

If he comes back it would be to get 300 wins. That means at least 2 more years.

October 7, 2008  08:31 AM ET

I agree with jason kidd, it is going to take two years, but does he have it in him to continue, he's what 40? If it's not the money and just the 300 wins, then OK he should accept a major cut in pay for 1 year with team option for 2010.

October 7, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Kidd is probably right. I think he's worth a two-year contract with the Yankees. Come back, Moose, we need ya!

October 7, 2008  08:52 AM ET

If he wants to come back on the cheap-
I'd re-up him for ONE year.....

It is IMPOSSIBLE he can duplicate this past year
no reason to overpay & give him any more years....
we've given him plenty already

You cold-hearted bahssterd.

I agree.... one year contract.... if he's thinking retirement, isn't that all he'd want anyways?? .... Not sure why he wouldn't hang out and try for 300 after his success last season..... might get himself into the HOF...... He's sure not Bert Blyleven..... 300 and he's in.....

October 7, 2008  11:37 AM ET

if the yanks can get him back cheap he should come back. i thought this guy was done 2-3 years ago but he proved to be the yanks most consistent arm in the rotation this past year. he's worth a shot. a true professional and good for some of the youngs on the staff.

October 7, 2008  12:01 PM ET

I would like to see him sign a series of 1 year deals until he hangs them up. I would like to see less money too. 12 million per?

October 7, 2008  12:02 PM ET

And way to go Moose on a 20 win season!!! and an almost certain trip to the hall...way to go!

October 7, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Come on back Moose...we got some young whippersnappers in the pen that need a mentor

October 7, 2008  12:47 PM ET

Forget about Mussina, what is Loggins doing next year?

October 7, 2008  01:25 PM ET

Mussina is lifetime 270 and 153. Jim Palmer is 268 and 152 and considered one of the great pitchers of all time. Every pitcher in MLB history who has 100+ wins more than losses is in the HOF. To put Mussina's win loss percentage in perspective, it is better than all 3 of the Atlanta stars Maddux, Smoltz, and Glavine, and far better than those 3 when taking the team's winning percentage relative to the individual. He is the only pitcher in AL history to have double digit wins 17 consecutive years, or 16 or 15 for that matter. He pitched his entire career in by far and away the best division in baseball during his 17+ year career, 8 Series champs 10 times the AL rep (make that 11 this year) and a very good chance at a 9th series win. All in the steroid era which admitedly was more rampant in the all hit no field AL. Mussina is already a first round Hall Of Fame lock. He does not need to come back if the Hall is his only reason. +

That's great stuff, trooper. Although I don't think the HOF would be his main concern, but I wonder if 300 wins isn't a personal plateau he has always wanted to reach. Either way, I'd like to see him back.

That's the question only he can answer. My gut says he'll come back for a 1 or 2 year deal and see how he pitches in 2009. A new Yankee Stadium is a powerful draw to someone who appears to want to wear a Yankee cap to Cooperstown. If he wins 15 or more games in 2009 than he'll pitch again in 2010 and go for 300. If not he'll go home. In no case do I think he'd return in 2011.

My point was not to come back for the hall, he is a shoe in with this 20 game season, and likely without it. The guy can still pitch, maybe he wants to, not just for the 300.

Good point.

I wish he would come back for at least one more year. I consider him one of "The Class Acts" in all of sports. Although nothing guarantees a Hall of Fame slot anymore, 300 wins on your resume would surely go a long way towards that end. Either way, I wish him well.

October 7, 2008  08:07 PM ET

Moose come back for a year and if you can pitch even close to the way you did overall for 2008 and get about 15 wins plus then go for the 300 wins and the sure election to the Hall.

Is Mussina a free agent ? If so and he decides to play next year it won't be with the Yankees.
