Braves to make run at Peavy

He's 27 years old, was a unanimous winner of the 2007 NL Cy Young Award, has averaged 192 innings and 194 strikeouts in six full seasons in the majors, and is under contract through 2011. I don't know, but it seems like the only way Jake Peavy could be a more perfect fit for the pitching-hungry Braves would be if he were a native Southerner. What's that? He was born in, raised in, and still lives in Alabama? Well, hell, then what's the holdup? Get that boy in a Braves uni, stat. OK, so it's not going to be that easy. But for all the denizens out there who believe your Braves don't have a chance of prying Peavy out of San Diego and bringing home this native son -- hey, he's practically that -- to pitch in Atlanta, well, don't be so quick to dimiss the notion. The Braves are holding organizational meetings this week at Dark Star (aka Lake Buena Vista, Fla.) and you can bet that Peavy's name is going to be discussed, as in, how serious are the Padres about the possibility of trading him, and what will they want in return?

The Braves are going to need more than a top starter to solve their problems. However this would be a great start. I feel that the Padres will require too much to let Peavy go.

Do the Braves honestly have anything of value to trade for Peavy anyway?

The Braves have always kept a great farm system. Even with the trade of their top prospect Elvis Andrus in the Mark Texeria deal, they steal have a loaded farm system. This would be a coup if they can pull this off. If they get Peavy, then all they'd need would be a leadoff hitter, a second basemen, a center fielder, a left fielder, a setup man, and a closer. But I still love my Braves

Injuns are notorious for getting the runs after eating white-eye meals....

Funny and accurate, bravo sir!

The braves need anything they can to make this happen, if they do this, then sign Dereck Lowe and try to Deal away Jason Bay from Boston and we are set. But please braves make the Peavy deal done, me us believe in our braves again.

How bout instead of Bay, Matt Holliday?

Maybe while they are at it, get Ned Yoast back into the Braves coaching staff somewhere. I dunno..

I love these home-town columnists who desperately need to fill space in fear of losing a job in the sinking-ship, Titanic industry of print journalism. This portion of the column is ridiculous. Peavy has repeatedly talked about in San Diego papers how he has moved his family to San Diego where HE WANTS them to be. That doesn't mean nothing will happen, but at least don't spread total BS for the sake of getting the 10 people in the Atlanta metro area still interested in the Braves to read the paper this afternoon. Geesh...

October 7, 2008  09:36 PM ET

Peavy would help all 30 teams. If Santana and Sabathia can get dealt, so can Peavy.

October 7, 2008  11:19 PM ET

Peavy has three years and an option left on his contract! This isn't a matter of losing him to free agency, its a matter of John Moores not willing to step up to the plate and do his part to help the team win. Peavy wants to win in San Diego, but if it were up to John Moores, he would rather lowball it and take the money from his fans, who averaged about 30,000 fans for a terrible team. Peavy is a graduate of the Padres minor league system which is notorious for not producing anyone with any talent whatsover. To trade Peavy with three years left would be a major message to the Padres fanbase and as a fan this would frustrate me beyond no other.

it think if the braves will pull the trigger they will have to sacrifies some of the best in the farm, but i like the deal coz they will have one of the best in the league. maybe like this jojo reyes, bret lillbrdge, kelly johnson, brandon jones and a player to be named for peavy and relief pitcher.

Why would Boston want to trade Bay?

October 9, 2008  04:19 PM ET

They wont thts why i said Holliday instead of Bay

Well, the sport analyst is going to explain. First bravesfan15 I am the biggest braves fan alive and to tell you the truth I would love to see Matt Holliday but I don't see it happening for the agent for Matt is Scot boras and we dont have good negotiation skills with Boras, all of his clients that were playing for the braves have left for free agency because he only wants top money for his clients. To East coast Keys, why the Padres would trade Peavy, easyli when you loose 99 games in a seaseon, you look to shake thing up in the whole team and I think teir is a good posibility that Peavy would end up in a braves uniform since we have top caliber youngsters in a our farmsystem. TenRingSTL Boston would trade Bay because he is in his final year of his contract and they also will have open spots in the shorstop position and we have one of the best in Yunel Escobar and we would still have a great prospect in Brent Lillibridge. So it wouldn't hurt a lot tragind Yunel off. Any other question please let me know.

Frank Wren/Scott Boras=dont mix

October 10, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Yes, Je Je Je you got it right. But lets have hope

October 11, 2008  02:57 PM ET

Maybe maybe....I would lve to see Derek Lowe and Holliday in a Braves uni. Although its unlikely to happen because: Scott Boras, Yankees, and Frank Wren
