Big win boosts Pitt recruiting

Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt is regarded as one of the top recruiters in the nation and he has signed top-rated recruiting classes in the Big East in each of the past three seasons, even though the Panthers have not registered a winning season during that period. That brings up an interesting question: If Wannstedt can recruit as well as he has without winning, how much better could he be with a successful season? This past weekend might have given him and his staff a taste of it as they were out recruiting (the Panthers are off this week) on the heels of their 26-21 upset of then No. 10 South Florida. "I got several e-mails and calls from recruits after the game, and we had a recruiting meeting and [the other coaches on the staff] had the same experience," Wannstedt said yesterday via teleconference. "We had two coaches stay and recruit in Florida after the game and it was very receptive. And then we had guys in New Jersey and we had guys in eastern Pennsylvania last week and everybody was echoing the same sentiments about how positive it is out there, and that's good." Wannstedt said that the victory has changed the outlook for the season.

Careful coach... You might end up like Pudding Pants in south bend.... Highly ranked classes... And 5 wins a year.... Expectations are a B

Pitt got lucky. Plenty of time for them to underachieve the rest of the year.

Seems to me that if Pitt "underachieves the rest of the year", then the win over USF wouldn't have been luck....right?

This Pitt team is loaded with talented players. Although inexperience at key positions - most notably quarterback and O-line - have been a major threat to this team's success all season. If they play well together and continue to get better as they gain experience then this will be a a very good team by the end of the year. I'm still staying cautiously optimistic about that happening.

After Pitt loses at home against West Virginia they'll be back in mediocrity where they've languished for years.

Big Win????

You need to remember that five years ago South Florida didn't play football at all. This is just another testament to the weakness of the Big Least.

Ha! A West Virginia fan calling another program mediocre...Pot, meet Kettle.

USF has been playing football for 11 years.

Eleven years, you may be right. However, how many of those years are in Division I-AA? South Florida was reclassified to Division I-A in 2001. So, I guess that three of your eleven years are at the Division I-AA level.

Don't get the wrong impression. South Florida has made amazing strides for being Division I-AA in 2000. I guess that there is plenty of talent to go around in Florida. I'm simply laughing at your conference.

I thought this would be Daves last year. He's had multiple hyped recruiting classes, all sub .500 seasons, and he started off the year with a huge loss to Bowling Green.

October 7, 2008  08:33 PM ET

Do a Bowling Green loss and a South Florida win offset each other?

Last call, maybe you should've pushed away from the bar at last call. If Pitt blows the season, then, yes, it validates the "lucky" comment. If they win out, it shows they are legit.

As for USF, we were missing our best LB, and Selvie was far from healthy. Still, we should've played better on O. Credit does go to McCoy and McKillop. Both are future NFL'ers.

Our program is young, and still getting used to playing well week in & out. Aside from FIU, this was the worst I've seen us play all year. Last year, same thing: we blew out UCF, then fell Thursday to Rutgers. This year, we pounded NC State, then underwhelmed v. Pitt. All we can do now is rest on the bye week, get healthy, pound Syracuse (which Pitt failed to do), and be strong playing L-ville and Cincy on the road, 5 days apart.

Big East is having a tough year, so the PSU bashing is expected. I've got NitLions fans, so I won't fight (although the joke with them is, the guys at PSU as such geek, their nickname is an abbreviation for "Not gittin' any Liars".).

HA HA HA HA! Wow they i love how uniformed wvu fans are. Mediocre? If i remember correctly WVU has no nation titles and Pitt has 9? So which is the mediocre program?

October 8, 2008  01:16 AM ET

While you where laughing at the big east did you happen to look at the bowl records of its teams the last couple of years? last year they where 3-2 and they where 5-0 there year before that. The big ten had a record of 3-5 the last two years, including being blown out in the national title games by SEC opponents. T

As if the win over the bulls wasn't enuff, now Pitt is stealing our recruits too....damn it goes from bad to worse...

October 8, 2008  05:57 AM ET

Dave is a horrible coach...Pitt won't last the year, because hes the only one with the talent to mess up that much talent

October 8, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Pitt is good for one big win each year. Congrats Pitt.

Cue the violins.

Wasn't it a true freshman that schooled a SENIOR DB on a 52 yd TD catch? The Bulls get a special teams TD and the 10th ranked team in the country still can't win at home. USF is an undisciplined, overrated pack of Fla. leftovers that UM, UF, FLA St., FIU, and Dade County Community College didn't want.

As for Mr. PSU. It's funny how being in position to actually finish higher than fourth in your conference for the second time in about a dozen years brings out the chest popping in you. Tell JoePud to schedule Pitt instead of Coastal Carolina, Temple, & Syracuse....and then come in here and scratch your b****. Let's see how the felons of Happy Valley do against Wisky & OSU.
