Slow economy doesn't faze Lakers sales

Everybody loves a winner, even during troubled economic times. The Lakers season-ticket holders renewed at a 99% rate for the upcoming season, an impressive percentage during robust financial periods, but much more so given the current slowdown. Season-ticket renewal averages across the league this season were about 79%. Some NBA teams have even had trouble collecting from fans. The Lakers, however, had no such issues when money was collected over the off-season, despite across-the-board price increases, a relatively unsurprising action after the team paid almost $5 million in luxury taxes on last season's payroll and faced a larger tax hit this season. Courtside seats, think Jack Nicholson, were raised from $2,300 to $2,500 per game, an 8.7% increase, and seats in six lower-level sections between the baskets were raised from $230 to $245, a 6.5% hike.

I guess you can do that and not have an issue when you're in Hollywood and everybody has money...

They all get their money's worth anyway. I'd pay $2500 for a courtside seat at Staples Center. Unfortunately, I live in Boston and have to be tortured by the Celtics. Go Lakers!

2009 is your year!

Its hollywood and even if sales did decline Jack Nicholson would back them up!

True statement. Certain teams can get away with charging astronomical prices and still get people to pay into them. The Lakers are one of them.

Typical Los Angeles Times thread. Lakers season ticket holders are not likely to be effected by the trying times. Wonder how much "reasearch" went into this.

October 7, 2008  12:37 PM ET

I will enjoy watching the games on ESPN,Fox Sports,TNT and NBA league pass.In HD you can see everything real good anyways and you dont have a stranger spilling beer on you that just cost $11.00 bucks!!

Quality costs money!

Then you go and spend your hard earned money. The quality isn't worth it.

October 7, 2008  06:13 PM ET

That much to watch them get blown out in a championship game? Haven't we all learned to be smarter with our investments? All Laker's fans are going to yield is another almost season. Being a Jazz fan I know a little something about that...

October 7, 2008  07:22 PM ET

Who cares.

October 7, 2008  09:09 PM ET

"A relatively unsurprising action after the team paid almost $5 million in luxury taxes,"??

Why penalize the paying fans for mismanagement of a Kupcake?

October 7, 2008  10:36 PM ET

Lots of jealous Laker haters on here. Why don't you look at your own team when you make comments about a team that is far more superior than yours. Only people who can legitimately talk smack are the Boston Celtics fans...everyone else roots for teams that are scrubs. Go Lakers!
