Will Brewers keep Sveum?

Flash or substance? Experience or familiarity? Those are the questions the Milwaukee Brewers must answer internally to decide if they will remove the "interim" from Dale Sveum's managerial status or look elsewhere for a field boss for 2009 and beyond. By virtue of squatting rights, Sveum will get the first opportunity to convince general manager Doug Melvin and his staff -- with owner Mark Attanasio's approval -- that he should keep the job. If the Brewers go for flash and/or experience, Sveum will not be back in 2009. His manner is frank yet understated, with little polish. And his previous managerial experience prior to replacing Ned Yost with 12 games left in the season consisted of three seasons with Class AA Altoona (2001-'03), an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Should substance and/or familiarity be the decisive factors, Sveum is in good standing with the Brewers. He upheld his reputation as a solid baseball man during three seasons on Milwaukee's coaching staff and his relationship with the players helped ease the transition when Yost was fired.

"His manner is frank yet understated, with little polish." That's how most Wisconsin girls describe the perfect man on E-Harmony. Re-sign the guy, see what he can do over the course of a season! You're the Brewers, for Christ's sake!

Look for Wisconsin native and Pirate bench coach Gary Varsho to get a look. Definitely qualified and he brings good mix of old and new school. He also has experience with development and accountability in organizations building within.

They can re-sign him, pay him nice coin, but this season was as good as its going to get for the current roster. In short, doesn't matter what you do.

at least sveum is stressing the use of small ball and needing to fix the roster to do so....yost would have sat back, just waiting for everyone to hack their way out of a slump and hit home runs.....

"bunt???? are you a pitcher???? no???? then go and hack!!!" - yost

He's as gone as 1984 !!! The next manager of the Brewers will be Mike Hargrove.

October 7, 2008  09:34 PM ET

Hargrove would be a good choice. So would Bobby Valentine. Sveum will have to wait.

maybe they will look for someone maybe hargrove or fregusi or maybe they want to try mazzone....

October 8, 2008  03:41 AM ET

Please take meathead Joe Girardi so the Yankees can hire Don Mattingly as manager.
