D'Antoni takes jab at Marbury

Even when he is falling into line, Stephon Marbury cannot help but draw attention to himself. Marbury's relationship with the Knicks has been troubled over the past few years, to say the least. Amid the headline-grabbing outbursts and extended bouts of sulking that became an emblem of the Isiah Thomas era, he made his feelings about spending time on the bench quite clear. He would rather be in a different city than on New York's sideline. But in the last two days, he changed his tune, saying that he had no problem coming off the bench if it helped the team. Every time he speaks publicly, however, Marbury seems to create fresh distractions. Mike D'Antoni, running his first preseason as the Knicks' coach, said he could not understand why Marbury's change of attitude warranted attention. In a thinly veiled jab at Marbury, D'Antoni told reporters: "For you all, that's big news. For me, that's how everybody should act." "I'm really proud that he did that," he added, referring to Marbury. "But it shouldn't be newsworthy. To do the right thing should never make the news."

You can say that again.

Got to hand it to Mike....setting the tone already.

Poor Mike. I don't think he has any idea of what he's gotten himself into. This is just the beginning. He's dealing with someone with IQ of a wet brick.

This coach could not win in championship with all the great player in poenix what is he going to do in new york

"This coach could not win in championship with all the great player in poenix what is he going to do in new york".

With Due respect REDFOX, He's not there to win championships or even a division title. His goal is to improve the Knicks. More wins or better yet make the playoffs.

Besides, Could the Knicks get any worse.
With first class people in Donny Walsh and DiAntoni, New York should be back to respectability sooner.

Looks like we finally have a coach who gets it...way to go Mike!

October 8, 2008  09:32 AM ET

D'antoni is totally right.. do what your supposed to do and shut up... don't look for praise for doing the right thing you'll get it.. i really like this guy.. he's very sarcastic and funny.. but he doesn't back down from the quality of play and practices he wants from his players.. don't compete you get benched.. perfect for changing the over-paid pre-madonnas in the knicks locker room

D'Antoni is dead on right for finally challenging Marbury for these ridiculous statements that he tends to make over the years. I have a weird feeling when Steph says things to the media he is supposed to say he expects a pat on the back or a rub on the belly by James Dolan or something.

Anyway, props to D'Antoni for kind of backslapping him a little bit.

If this was with Isiah running the show- I would say you're right
but with the ne regime.......I think you're a little off.

There are always knuckleheads WHEREVER you go....
rodman wasn't one for Phil?
- the key is how you handle it.
So far.....and we're one week in.......
D'A has shown very positive signs of how he wants things run
saying " To do the right thing should never make the news."
is EXACTLY srtraight-up truth-
refreshing after hearing Isiah's mouth for years

Why is this a story. The media hates the idea Marbury is still in NY. Mike really did not say anything bad about Marbury. Nice Marbury is doing the right thing, but for how long.

Which great players did he have in Phoenix? Are you talking about the 1993 Suns or last year's team? Cause last year they only had one star player. He will do a very good job but not this year since he has to work the roster and changed things around. Him and walsh are on the same page, that's all he needs

Mike will learn that the New York news media make a story out of everything. Sort of like FanNation. He'll have to learn to comment about everything from a player's stubbed toe to his felony arrest record.

Welcome To NY

The Knicks had a 6 pick in a draft that was deep by the analysts. I am trying to be fair. But I see bad signs. One bump in the summer league and your pick has been out every sense. Back problems at 19 sends up red flags.

We really need Danilo to show the city something this year.

So should Steph just stop answering questions?

I agree that this is a non-story, but I don't believe that Marbury published the story. He was asked a direct question about coming off the bench. He answered it. Correctly even. And then a reporter decides to ask D'Antoni to comment on Steph's comment. That's just stupid. I don't see where it was really a jab at Marbury, he even says that he was proud of him for it. The jab was more at the media for trying to create news out of a non-story.

What can you possibly expect from this kid?
we took him NOT for this year......
we took him for the next several years.
All I want from him this year is to see he UNDERSTANDS
basketball & get stronger

I personally don't like international big men & would've gone
elsewhere- but really- was the draft deep? Not really.
deep at average players- but NOT top tier talent

October 8, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Guys it's October 8th. Marbury is simply playing the game. If Duhon is made the starter, and Marbury is relegated to the 6th man, we will then see the old Marbury. At this point, he could still be named the starter. Once a decision has been made...let's just say, a leopard doesn't change his spots. Cancer has been known to lie dormant for years, then, wham.

Professional athletes doing the right thing is newsworthy because it happens so seldom.

Simone..thats the beauty of being in the media... you have so many things going and you know Marbury will always be in the middle of some type shiznit... but like I said before if I was Marbury I'd ask the Knicks to put a gag order on me...

Listen Stef has no choice... if he refuses to come of the bench he looses 22 mil so it aint like he sacrificed or did something worth mentioning...

He really has to kiss a lot of ars to get his money this year... poor stef if he blinks wrong... the Knicks will suspend him for the season without pay....

I know his ego is hurt but the chicken in him can't seem to read between the lines...
