Baylor: Dispute led to Clippers exit

Moving Day, the Clippers' switch to their new facility in Playa Vista, took place last month essentially without Elgin Baylor, their longtime vice president of basketball operations and general manager. He had not been on hand during the early stages of training camp and his power within the organization had greatly diminished well before then. On Tuesday, the Clippers announced that Coach Mike Dunleavy would take on the additional duties of general manager, replacing Baylor, who had served in that capacity since 1986. Neil Olshey, the team's director of player personnel, will be the assistant general manager, Dunleavy said. The details surrounding Baylor's departure were murky, and the eight-paragraph release from the team didn't fill in many of the blanks. It is believed the organization offered him a consultant's position carrying his current job title. But Baylor, 74, made it clear in a brief telephone interview that the parting was less than amicable. "There is a dispute, and on the advice of my attorney they did not want me to discuss it," Baylor said. "That's all I can say." He would not say whether he retired, resigned or was fired. Neither of Baylor's two attorneys could be reached for comment. Dunleavy said the Clippers approached him Tuesday afternoon and said that he was told that Baylor had resigned and the team wanted the coach to assume the GM duties.

Yeah~ Blame him for the loss of Elton Brand!

A few years ago he was the executive of the Year. A few years ago Avery Johnson was coach of the Year.

How quickly things have changed.

I guess Dunleavy finally won the power struggle. Now if Dunleavy could actually coach.

Elgin Baylor has been as good a GM over the years... As Sterling has an owner... This guy should thank his lucky stars that he had a job all these years.... His player moves and acquistions rarely worked... Great player... Bad GM... Someone finally got smart and let him go

I cannot believe he lasted so many years there
By FAR the clippers have been the WORST organization
in the NBA & possibly team sports over the last 20 years

Good riddance

I don't think "coach" is the position Dunleavy really wants afterall.

Baylor was Executive of the Year a few years back, but overall his tenure has been a failure. Too bad, great player, lousy evaluator of talent.

Executive of the year & coach of the year is a BOGUS award-
all you do is have to be the worst team in the league &
get a little better & you get the award........

Consistent play is the key to good coaching/management

I am by no means a Dunleavy fan, but Elgin Baylor should have been fired years ago. The only team in sports that has been mismanaged to a greater degree, is the Miami Dolphins. (one could argue the Florida Marlins) Look at the records of his 22 years in the position. NEVER produced a winner. Listen, that sucking sound you here in the West, is the Clippers going down the drain during Baylor's tenure.

I mean can you blame the organization for parting ways with Mr. Baylor. I would have let him go years ago with all the bad decisions he has made to the Clippers organizations. Since he has been the GM in 86 they have only made the playoffs 4 times with 3 first round exits. He also hasn???t drafted smart either with two first picks drafting Danning Mannings and Michael Olowankandi the biggest bust. I am glad to see the Clippers organization making a change that will better them in the future. They need a guy that knows what he is doing and how to scout players talent and not play a guessing game costing them time and money! Good for them!!

He should have left years ago i mean with so many problem drafts, stupid trades and such. I mean especially never returning the calls Elton Brand made to rehash out his deal in early July, then the Sixers came knocking and the Clips never returned his calls, boom he was gone.

October 8, 2008  06:06 PM ET

To be fair, he was running THE CLIPPERS... until the last couple of years Sterling would have rather parted with his left nut before he handed over a $20 bill, and Elgin actually has brought in some pretty decent talent. In fact most everyone had the Clips as a legit playoff team in the West before last season started. That tells me that Elgin wasn't a Millen or Zeke. Injuries have just destroyed this team the last few years. Baylor should share some of the blame, but you won't see this team become legit anytime in the near future. From the fan's perspective Sterling should be considered one of the worst owners in professional sports. Don't kid yourselves, the Elton Brand drama has the stink of Sterling all over it.

Definitely, the GM can only do so much when you have an owner who has 'short arms with deep pockets.' Baylor's hands have been tied, it wasn't until a few years ago that Sterling finally came up off the $$$ to make them competitive... Their biggest debacle was not wooing Bryant from the Lakers a few years back. Had Sterling green lighted a astronomical salary, the Clips would have been the premiere team in L.A.
