Mavs fans give Howard warm reception

Josh Howard received a mostly positive reception from fans at American Airlines Center on Tuesday night. From his coach, it was nothing short of rave reviews and unbridled optimism. Howard took the first step toward putting his controversial summer behind him, getting mostly cheers mixed with scattered boos when he was introduced in the Mavericks' starting lineup. He's the person whose tough summer was capped by his disparaging comments about the national anthem that were caught on tape. The small forward has moved on and, based on reaction of the home fans, so have most of them. The bigger test probably will come at road games.

Good for the MAVS.
You can trade him now or else would be a fire sale. Give him a chance to redeem himself.
Imagine had the Lakers panicked when Kobe got into trouble a few years ago in Colorado.
I guess Adidas is kicking themselves for letting Kobe go to Nike.

Good for the MAVS.
You CAN'T trade him now or else would be a fire sale .....

Good for the fans. This guy is a moron but it wouldn't have helped his cause or the teams cause by booing him every time he touched the ball.

Sometimes a player can get away with being a jerk-off by being highly talented. That's not the case with Howard. He won't last in Dallas, not because of his mouth but because he hasn't gotten it done on the court when it counts.

it's not like he shot someone......
as hova said- he's a dodo- but if he can help them win-
no one will care what he says-

I can't disagree- but it was & has been a team collapse in D
- Dirk is the man- the expectations are MUCH less for josh

ugh, JGB, Dirk is NOT the man. If he was he wouldn't have crumbled in the past two post-seasons. Firing Avery, next to not getting rid of Dirk, is the dumbest mistake they have made thus far. As long as The Big German is the centerpiece the Mavs won't even sniff another Finals series... except for when they visit San Antonio and see four Championships hanging from the rafters. Back to Howard: two years ago I thought he was going to just completely take over the Mavs and step his game up, his physique and athleticism gear you up for that takeover. Only, it never happened and I am surprised because when you look at Josh you would think that was a man who could take over a game. Hopefully things change for him because although I despise the Mavs, hate Mark Cuban and have no love for Dirk: I do think Josh can get back on track and become the beast we all thought he would be a few years back. Or at least the beast I thought he was going to be coming out of college.

October 8, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Hopefully, he'll learn a lesson and stop trying to be funny when he's clearly not a comedian. Now if he can just get his mind on basketball.

October 8, 2008  11:06 AM ET

As they say in every sport, "Winning solves a LOT of problems." - If Josh plays well then he will continue to get warm welcomes in big D. As Rick James said though, I wouldn't expect to have the same reception on the road.

The sad reality in my mind is that the majority of the outcome of this season for the Mavs rest on Howard's shoulders. We aren't paying him the money he is getting to simply watch him be a sub par player. There is no replacement for Damp on the way and the only way Kidd will show any worth is if players such as Josh make their shots. Howard SHOULD be the #2 on this team behind Dirk and at times #1 but he will have to turn things around in a major way to get there.

Dude- Dirk IS the man on that team......
who else is better there ?

I think you are misreading my point- I am not saying
Dirk is the best player in the world, but he IS the best
player on the Mavs- by FAR

Sports fans have short memories. If Dallas were able to compete in the West, in a relatively short time, noone would remember. Unfortunately, that isn't the case, and some fans will not forget. As HOVA pointed out, it will be a lot worse on the road.

I couldn't agree more. Typical comment though. Strangely enough as crappy as people claim Dirk to be there aren't any offers out there that would be worth a trade. Dallas would have to get a Franchise player for Dirk or it would be a no deal. Again, if Dirk gets surrounded by people who can hit their shots then the other team has to do one of two things. They let them make the shots while they double and triple Dirk or they come out and defend the shot and leave Dirk to make more points. People can rant how Kobe makes so many more points even with a bad supporting cast but he did far less to make his team better in those situations than Dirk has done. Jacking the ball up for 80% of your team's shots doesn't help anyone. It just pads your stats. I'm not trying to knock Kobe. I'm just saying that Dirk doesn't get enough credit. The only way he would get credit in a crowd like this (on fannnation) is if he would have layed West out in the playoffs last year. But WAIT, then he would be called a dirty **** of a player.

the dEE of dees - "who cares!"
I couldn't agree more at this point. It has to be put behind him. He will deal with the fans in other stadiums and I think rightfully so that people will boo him. He will get over it.

October 8, 2008  01:02 PM ET

For the idiot saying Dirk crumbled in last years playoffs, check out his stats. They were through the roof, as usual for Dirk.

if i remember correctly it was something like 28,12, and 4

October 8, 2008  01:04 PM ET

just barely off. Dirk was:

26.8, 12, and 4 on 48% shooting. Those are dream stats for anyone else in the league.
