Lack of holding penalties angers Colts

07:39 AM ET 10.08 | Whatever happened to offensive holding in the NFL? It used to be said that holding was so rampant it could be called on every play. Lately, at least according to the Indianapolis Colts, in order to speed up the game, the league reserves holding calls for when the defensive player is in position to affect a play. It's a touchy subject for Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney, who expects to be held each game and not get the call. "I've actually had a ref tell me he's not going to call holding unless he thinks I'm going to make the play," said Freeney, the franchise sacks leader with 63. "I used to get holding calls. Now they don't call anything. . . . It's ridiculous. Against Jacksonville, there was a guy who grabbed me by my hips and pulled me back." Through five weeks, offensive holding has been called 157 times, which projects to 543 penalties over the full season. That would be a two-decade low, by far. Three years ago, officials called 880 offensive holding penalties, the most in 20 years.

Just play the freaking game and be quiet!! You mean to tell me that an offensive holding call will keep you from winning the game? Get over it and play ball. First the refs call too many penalties, wrong penalties and now not enough. Refs aren't GODS, they won't catch everything, it's impossible....Better get off their backs for your team's sake....

Super Sage!!

October 8, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Really, the Colts are complaining about ANOTHER team getting away with holding? Have they watched game film of themselves?

October 8, 2008  08:50 AM ET

ANY advantage given to one team over another can determine the outcome of a game. In addition, many players have "escalators" written into their contracts that are triggered my sacks. Holding Dwight Freeny affects his stat line and, as a consequence, his bank account. Those things aside, right is right and fair is fair.

October 8, 2008  08:56 AM ET

I smell a rule change....the whiney complaining Colts lose a game and they cry about holding just like they did years ago againts the Patriots and they change the rules of the game. The Colts complained the Patriots were holding their receivers and the next year the league changed the rules for DB's.

October 8, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Actually, the Colts won and are still arguing. And the fact remains to be said - the ref even said they weren't calling holding. So, obviously, it's there but it's not being called. How is that whiney again? And yes, the Patsies were holding the Colts receivers during that game. So much emphasis is being placed on physicality in the NFL that rules and fair play are being thrown out the window. It's no wonder that the "heroes" of the game are suicidal, arrogant, overpaid babies. Half the leagues gets suspended at some point for being **** - Burress, Travis Henry, Shawne Merriman, etc. Can we get some real football players in this league?

October 8, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Wahhhhhhhhh! Hey Dungy, go bring up "holding" penalties with your prison ministry work.

are you Fing KIDDING ME???????? i'm a bears fan living in indy and i swear to god i've NEVER seen a team get away with more than the colts do. or "coats" as the hicks here call em. i've seen guys on opposing teams get tackled so they can't get to manning, i've seen roughing the passer called on manning when the guy barely runs into him right after he releases the ball(urlacher knows what i'm talkin' about). i've seen them win games(pats a few years ago) when their defender tackled the patriots receiver before he could catch it. wow. accept the fact that you guys suck and move on, play harder. maybe the league is tired of GIVING them football games and thats why they're not winning, i don't know. the colts are the spurs(get every call) of the nfl. to hear them complain is laughable

think the NFL needs a new name... NFL=EWL Enough Whinning league....

give me a break.. if they can't handle some of these player, plays, and play some football, then get off the field and go do something else.. there are plenty of other people that would love to make the kind of money they do... GROW UP WOMEN and play some football.. or go play in the bra and panty league they are forming

I agree that the Colts are one of the worst holding offenders in the league.

At the same time, I am amazed with the holding that Jax gets away with game in, and game out. I watched pass rushers get dragged down from behind when they had beaten their blockers all night long in the Steeler game, and NONE of them were called.

This discretionary and arbitrary use of the holding penalty is ridiculous. Call it - consistently, or eliminate it all together.

October 8, 2008  09:59 AM ET

They are right. It is part of the NFL movement to protect the QB and open up the passing game even more.. It is about selling tickets.....The numbers do not lie, about a 40% drop in holding being called. It is like the unwritten rule in baseball about the strike zone by definition and by what is actually called in a game...

October 8, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Who cares who is doing the complaining. The point is that the NFL is not calling penalties that are penalties. That is a fact. They've made rule changes in the past that are geared at eliminating "subjective" calls, such as penalizing face masks as either 5 or 15 yards (all automatically get 15 now). Now the refs are only calling holding if the "player is in a position to make a play?" That's as subjective as it gets! What if you hold someone right off the line? Would they EVER get "in a position to make a play?" 50 year is right, this is just another attempt by the NFL to reduce the power of dominating, pressure defense (which I personally love watching) while allowing offensive minded teams to "air it out" (which in my book gets boring fast).

Funny complaint from one of the teams whose offensive line has most consistently gotten away with holding for years.

October 8, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Hmmm, so if I hold you then you can't "make the play" and therefore there will be no penalty? OK, I WILL hold you! Pretty simple.

Hmmm, let's see IF I inadvertanly grab your facemask and I let go I get a 5 yd penalty...but if it is ALWAYS 15 yds now, WHY would I ever let go? You and your helmet stay right here with me!!

I could not have put it better myself. Well said.

If an offensive lineman commits a holding penalty that isn't called and prevents the defensive player from producing a drive-ending sack, then yeah, it can determine the outcome of the game. And to all the people proclaiming that the Colts commit the most non-called holding penalties in the league, you're obviously basing that on the fact that you watch all the games played by every team and pay particularly close attention to the line of scrimmage, otherwise you wouldn't make such a bold statement, right? Yeah that's what I thought.

October 8, 2008  03:52 PM ET

THE! COLTS! WON!!!
also, is it just me, or do the texans seem to have the colt's number? its like the bears and packers last year where the bears beat the pack 2x. i mean, last year the texans won, and the year before that, and the year before that. and if rosenfels had not melted down, it would have happened again. Its also like chargers and colts.

i agree w/ the facemask prt, but the holding thing.. if theres a penalty that does not affect the play, and it isnt something like a facemask/horsecollar then y call it? if a tackle holds a linebacker while the qb releases the ball, and there was no way the LB could affect the play, then what is the problem? low blocks is something else tho, cos that can injure them, but holding dont injure
