Injury may cause Paterno to retire

Joe Paterno's physical health has declined to the point where it could cause him to do something no one expected: retire of his own accord. There is some mystery about the exact condition of Paterno's right knee, but he is hobbling badly and looked like a man who will be 82 in two months when he made a brief appearance on the field before the game Saturday against Purdue. The injury is said to have occurred three days before the season opener when Paterno was demonstrating a kicking technique. It appears to be getting worse instead of better, not all that surprising for someone his age. Some have speculated he has a ligament injury that will require surgery. A more authoritative source has said the problem is with his hip and that Paterno will require hip-replacement surgery after the season. Paterno was on a golf cart at practice this week, a further indication that he is not getting better.

Its only a matter of time before the Grim Reaper starts chasing Joe in a golf cart of his own. Problem is, with Pater ohno !'s right leg being injured, good luck putting the pedal to the metal Pa.

My favorite Paterno is getting old moment was when he had to run in the locker room during the game for a bathroom emergency a few years back...

Can't he still go up and down the sidelines in a rascal scooter? That would be cool!

October 8, 2008  08:07 AM ET

He'll be fine. He has a good stafff that has been together for a long time and he said in his press conference that his problem is fixable. He didn't retire when he had his leg broken 2 years ago.

October 8, 2008  08:08 AM ET

Maybe if we won it all but I can't see Joe ever retiring....

October 8, 2008  09:18 AM ET

OK, 82 year old men should NOT be demonstrating anything but how to use those high seated toilets, depends undergarment, and how to operate the emergency call bracelets.

I actually think it's great he is still coaching. And it would be great to see PSU win the NC. That old guy should teach those young punk coaches a thing or two!

October 8, 2008  10:24 AM ET

One of my favorite people, and high on my list of coaches. I hope he gets the thing fixed off season and retires when he wants.

October 8, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Injury or not, it may be the year for JoePa to give it up. Ten wins this season is looking pretty good right now. His contract is up as well. Recruiting has not been great. Joe can leave the program under his terms. Hell, if he still wants to hang around, he obviously has a seat in the press box. Either way, he knows there are only a few years left. He should go out with the great team he has this year.

This poster would like to see JoePa name Tom Bradley as the 2009 PSU coach during his post-game bowl interview. Actually, I'd love to see Bill Cowher and his chin walk the sideline in Happy Valley, but that's not going to happen.

October 8, 2008  11:45 AM ET

He coaches he head, not is leg. I have seen film of him at practice and he gets very physical, and it would be a shame to lose that aspect of his coaching. Does not need to stop unless HE wants to. He has given to much to the school, the program and college football in general

October 8, 2008  12:23 PM ET

Cannot see Joe retiring no matter what happens to him. I keep saying this but he will literally die on the sidelines.

October 8, 2008  12:31 PM ET

For those of us in the Nittany Nation and others outside that respect greatness should appreciate what they are witnessing. I think this is it. This is JOEPA'S last hurrah. This man set the standard for great leadership and is what college football is all about. To the fools that speak for which they do not know, we completely ignore you. Talk your smack on another thread. The truth is, we're gonna miss him when he's gone so cherish what you see and appreciate it because there will be no more like him. This man has/had ties with footballs greatest heavy weights. Vince Lombardi, Weeb Eubanks,Paul 'Bear' Bryant and so many more I lose count not the mention the great football players that played for him. I hope we can run the table and play for NC this year!!! But if not, we still love ya!!! So here's to JOEPA! Cheers.

Hip replacement can take a while to recover, but not something that typically forces someone to retire. I know multiple people that have had that surgery and they all are fine now.

If PSU were to go undefeated, NC or not, I believe Joe would retire. This would give him at least one undefeated season in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s.

October 8, 2008  12:38 PM ET

It's like he and Bowden are waiting for each other to die or retire.

October 8, 2008  01:24 PM ET

It's getting to the point where Paterno is almost selfish. His team is doing very well but all anyone wants to talk about is him, his injury, where he is during the game, will he retire, will he die....I mean, talk about distractions! I would hate to see him drag his career out and have to witness the steady decline of BOTH his health and the PSU football program.

October 8, 2008  01:44 PM ET

He was a great coach, but now he nothing more than a symbol. The other coaches are the ones running the show. He should do the right thing and name a person to take over and step down. If he were in a regular company he would have already had forced retirement, most of them.

I don't think its distracting the team so far.

Offense: No. 7 in scoring (44.8 ppg); No. 9 in total yards (499.7 avg.); No. 8 in rushing (256.7 ypg); No. 40 in passing (243.0 ypg)

Defense: No. 11 against the run (80.2 ypg); No. 8 in pass-efficiency (nine interceptions, four TD passes); No. 8 in total yards (250.3 ypg); No. 9 in points allowed (11.7 avg.); and 14th in sacks (2.8 per game)

Coach Joe is one of the greats coach to ever grace the sidelines.

October 8, 2008  03:03 PM ET

I think he should retire. Then he could run for President. He has more of his faculties than that other old geezer.

I would hate to see JoePa retire due to an injury. It wouldn't be a fitting end for such a great coach, IMO, one of the best ever. We won't see another one like him.

My fellow Noles may kill me for saying this, but if an injury forces JoePa to retire after this year, then I hope he finishes first in the race to Most Wins Ever. Couldn't happen to a better guy, and that's a lot for me to say considering how much I like Coach Bowden.
