Quick-learning Rose expected to start

Remember all the talk from last June about bringing Derrick Rose along slowly and not burdening a rookie owning one season of college experience with too many expectations? Well, forget about all that. In conversations with several people who have witnessed or participated in Bulls practices, the praise for Rose is glowing and unanimous. Two people --one with ties to the Bulls' organization, one without -- said Rose is having the best training camp of anybody on the team. Most observers now consider Rose a lock to be a starter on opening night against the Bucks on Oct. 28.

I guess they are taking the trial by fire approach. Does this mean Kirk is expendable?

October 8, 2008  06:14 AM ET

He was the NO.1 pick, you are not gonna bench him, are you...?

October 8, 2008  07:56 AM ET

Good point. What's the point then in making him the top pick if he's not going to displace Hinrich.

So the janitor, the towel boy, and his mom said he is having the best training camp of anyone on the team? Great article

October 8, 2008  09:28 AM ET

i hope he is mature enough.. if hinrich's season last year was just a brain freeze i think he would be more suitablt as a starter.. this is a team that has gotta be thinking playoffs.. i don't know if a rookie point guard is the best way to get you there

Ben Gordon is focusing on developing a new energy drink and how he will survive on $6.4 million this coming year. I guess that was distracting enough for Ben to go out and injured.

Ben Gordon missed a portion of the Bulls' 3-hour-15-minute practice Monday after jamming his toe. Gordon also is nursing a sore ankle, although coach Vinny Del Negro said neither injury is serious and Gordon hasn't sat for an entire practice.

Derick Rose will be the main guy of this team. Both he and Larry Hughes should be the starting backcourt.

October 8, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Makes sense to play him. You showed your committment to him when you drafted him number one overall, and the only way he is going to mature into a great PG is by giving him this trial by fire.

Hopefully if he succeeds early it might free them up to trade Heinrich to one of the teams out there who could use PG help.

The bulls are going nowhere anyway this year-
at best they will be in the mix for the 8th spot.
- let the kid play, mature and find who else on the team
he feels comfortable & uncomfortable with & THEN
in the next few years you can build a winner

October 8, 2008  10:11 AM ET

I love it. I hope he challanges for Rookie of the Year, although Oden looks strong and Beasley is in a better position to score points and put up numbers.

October 8, 2008  10:14 AM ET

You might as well he going have to learn some how to be the floor general and for a 1st of the draft you can't let him sit.

They have the option of beginning the season with him coming off the bench. This will give Hinrich an opportunity to show if last season was just a fluke. He is a good player and if he gets back to his previous form, he can be used in a trade as suggested. Starting him allows you to showcase him and not put too much pressure on Rose from the beginning. By the trade deadline, it's Rose's team, Kirk's trade value may increase dependant on his play, and the Bulls could possibly get a better big man. He's their best chance to trade since no one is going to want to pay Larry Hughes' salary..yet. Or Ben Gordon's one-year deal. Perhaps package Kirk with either Tyrus Thomas or Drew Gooden and send them to Miami for Shawn Marion.

I don't think Hinrich will get traded. That puts too much of the pressure on Rose as a rookie and does give the team much back up if Rose goes down.

They should have been running an uptempo offense the last few years with all the young athletic kids they have there. Instead they ran a slow it down half court offense which is horrible if you dont have an inside presence.

Duh--is this really a surprise to anyone? The guy was the number 1 pick in the draft. Was anyone expecting him to sit the bench?

October 8, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Boston proved last year that you do not need a premier point guard to win it all. He will just need to make minimal amount of mistakes, especially turnovers, and keep the game close.

October 8, 2008  11:47 AM ET

This is no surprise at all, he is #1 Pick. Played very well in March Madness, has more experiance then the so called out of high school players that used to start a few years back. This is a good move and was expected.

Maybe the bulls can swap whiners w/the Knicks Gordon for starbaury
