Mattingly helps Dodgers through tough times

Don Mattingly wants to manage, and thought he was in line as Joe Torre's bench coach to become the Yankees' manager last October. But the Yankees first insulted Torre with a World Series-or-else contract offer he rejected, and then chose Joe Girardi over Mattingly to manage -- the first of the body blows that was compounded more seriously by the dissolution of his 29-year marriage to his wife, Kim. Those proceedings are ongoing, and Mattingly won't discuss them, but, with three children, there were and are issues that transcended baseball.

Sorry about the dissolution of your marriage, Don, you can always get another wife. Now manage? That's going to be alittle tough comparably speaking. I'm still trying to figure out why the yankees did what they did with these to well respected winners.

to = two it's coffee time.

You can't always get what you want, as the Stones once said.

Why blame the Yankees? Torre did a great job there, but his time was clearly up. Every coach gets fired at some point. Mattingly had no managing experience. Girardi was a NL Coach of the Year. Easy decision in my books. This is just more Yankee -hating, and not surprising since it came from LA, the team the Yanks used to kick around every October.

So......where did Mattingly help the Dodgers through tough times? This headline is pretty much no makey sense.

October 8, 2008  09:01 AM ET

Donny was in no position to manage considering he had to take a leave of absence after accepting the job with LA so going with Girardi I understand.
The way the Yankees handled the Torre contract was disgusting. You don't offer a one year contact and expect someone to begin the season as a lame duck. If you don't him back don't offer a contract.
Then they stiffed him in the closing ceremonies at the Stadium which was ridiculous. Pure Stienbrenner class.

He helped everyone by going home and keeping that travesty of a wife from getting behind the wheel with a 1.75 liter bottle of booze.

If you don't WANT him back I meant to say

Now see, THAT should have been the headline....

At one point I believe it was. Perhaps he helped them through the tough times by convincing the younger players not to get married until they're his age. His next wife will be quite the trade up I'm sure.

Lifetime Sox fan here, and I've always been a HUGE Mattingly fan. He's a class act... had Torre's back regardless of what the Steinbrenner's thought of his comments... great hitter. I only wish he still had the 'stache.

I only wish I didn't have to see him in that other jersey. Wearing #8 to honor Yogi and not wearing 23 was another example of his class.

So, is what you're saying is that he drove her to drink?

No, she drove herself. That was the problem. I can see why she was so upset with all that money and the big house and all. Last picture I saw she still had the mid 80's teased hairdo. It's frightening.

Maybe the headline is supposed to read: "Dodgers help Mattingly through tough times"

I'm sure there's quite a few women in LA helpin him through as well. 29 nine years of marriage and 3 kids later? That first piece of steady, 25 year old, never had a kid, tanned b00bs, blonde California strange must have been exceptional.
