Palmeiro still prefers privacy

Rafael Palmeiro, a finger-wagging symbol of baseball's steroids era, wants to be left alone. But after Mississippi State announced this summer that Palmeiro was going to be inducted into its Hall of Fame, I thought he might want to discuss what he's learned about himself and how the steroids scandal that ended his 20-year career three years ago has affected his life. So I decided to find him. Palmeiro, though, doesn't want to talk. "Rafael knows you're looking for him," his wife Lynne said the other day. "I'll tell him I spoke to you. I don't know if he'll call you." He didn't. These days, Palmeiro spends his time helping his children maximize their talents. Patrick, drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, is a third baseman at Grayson County Community College in Denison. Preston is a freshman at Colleyville Heritage.

I too, prefer privacy.

Hmmmmmmm. What parent would allow Palmeiro to "maximize" their child's talents?

October 9, 2008  07:15 AM ET

Oooops! I misread the sentence. He's helping his own kids "maximize" their talents. I still say "Hmmmmmmmm."
No testing in little league as far as I know, but can that be that far into the future?

I really need to wake up. His kids are in College. Maybe I need to be tested for something.

It's okay TGRFAN1, you are entitled after what your team put you through this season. Privacy is a clever way of masking your irrelevancy.

The Pirates drafted a third basemen from a community college? Palmiero couldn't afford to send his kid to a better school?

October 9, 2008  09:34 AM ET

does he live in the same house as mcguire???

Raffy was my Dads favorite player in 1985. Were still talking about this guy? Maybe if he didn't mix HGH and Viagra he would make the Hall.

October 9, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Rafael Palmeiro is the worst of all the athletes that were found using steroids and, honestly, the last one I thought would be cheating. He was found out, with evidence, and he completely left the game with no explanation to his fans; A TRUE COWARD!! I always liked him as a player, back to his days with the Cubs, and even if it was an "I made a mistake" or the "I was fighting injuries and HGH heals faster" BS it would have been better than nothing.

Maybe Clemens needs somebody to hang out with?

Now that's funny. Thanks for making me laugh.

let's move on with this already. he was a heck of ball player whose accomplishments will forever be in question because of steroids. he wasn't the only one nor will he be the last. i think people would be shocked to learn how many pitchers used as well......and it undoubtedly is an advantage for them too
