Celtics: Allen to get more shots

When you are considered among the best pure shooters in the NBA, you get used to being a team's first offensive option. But last season, Ray Allen had to adjust his expectations, spending most of the time as a comparative afterthought in the Celtics' attack. Allen was a highly regarded afterthought, of course, and by the final playoff series, he had not only become a first option at times, but he was the only Celtic considered invaluable enough to play the entire 48 minutes of a game. Allen's profile has been raised this preseason. The Celtics spent much of their practice time in Newport, R.I., running plays to set him up on the perimeter. "I thought he had the best camp," coach Doc Rivers said. "He played great and we put more in to accent him. It was tougher last year for him because we had to get Kevin [Garnett] involved in the offense and Paul [Pierce] was already involved. We only had a certain amount of time and he was almost the third thought. "Now he knows where to get his shots in the offense and guys know how to find him."

One of my favorite players. I rather have him than the "Best Basketball Player on God's Green Earth".

OK, but that means someone else is getting less. That is the part the coach never tells the next guy. They usually figure it out by half time.

Maybe he'll actually hit some shots then instead of going missing for so long in the playoffs that he was put on the sides of milk carton's in the Boston area...

They do need to get Ray more shots and it may have to be at KG's expense because I can't see Paul Pierce cutting back on his output.

When Ray played last night he was making it rain, he should get a lot of open shots this season. And one thing MAN I like Bill Walker a lot man that slam over Ratliff was great, Walker got some leap. Bill Walker will be a steal in the draft from what I see if he keeps working on his game he will be a great basketball player. Even though Celtics lost last night (preseason game is not a big deal) the Celtics look really good last night even Rondo look like he improve to. But I give the 76'ers props they have a really good team especially with Young, and Williams it seem like Young couldn't miss a shot last night when he was on fire. Now with Brand, Iguodala, and Miller the 76'ers will be a strong team this season. The Celtics look strong too, and should pick up were they left off, last season and should be better team after last season.

Ray had a tough stretch during the post-season.....but he was clutch when they needed it against the Lakers.

Ray Allen, in my opinion, should have been the finals MVP.. i think it was alot closer then people realize.. he was key in that historic comback and clutch in the closer as well as consistant in the other finals games.. it's Finals mvp not playoff mvp.. and i think that he was the best Celtic in the final series.. more touches will just help him get his rhythm back to where it was in the past.. that along with other contributions frm various players should help ofset the departure of Posey... Maybe?

why change what works?
- he's also geting older by the day

October 9, 2008  10:55 AM ET

He does need to get into the offensive flow earlier in the game and get more touches early. The question, I guess, is whether he should keep shooting if he feels his shot is off. He has a tendency to stop shooting if he's missing. I'm sure they want him to keep shooting and attempt to find his rythym. I'm leaning in the direction of "good move" on this one, but I'm not overwhelmed by the decision.

Well Rays shot is the nicest and purest in the game. Everyone teaches their kids to shoot like him. Now i wish this would have been out last night since I had my fantasy bball draft and i didnt take Ray Allen when i had the chance because he is surrounded by 2 other all stars. Thought a guy like Kevin Martin might give me more fantasy points.

Ray will be there just like the other 2 all stars. The problem w/ the Cs would be the question of who is going to fill in what James Posey used to bring.

October 9, 2008  02:14 PM ET

guamballer, tony allen, billy walker, and darius miles will fill that void so don't worry aight?

Guam Baller, Darius Miles was brought in to take up some of the Posey slack and Bill Walker looked good last night (wait until he learns how to play NBA style ball).

If it ain't broke, why are you trying to fix it? This is a veteran team. When Allen began to hit the shots, nobody had a problem getting him the ball. Why redirect the offense to focus on one player?

October 9, 2008  04:12 PM ET

i agree with hllywd but i will not be surprised if allen is the new leading scorer. also their is always room to improve...

ray allen is i hate to say it but old, and washed up. he is gonna be a disappointment this year as the celtics struggle to make the playoffs
