Mussina may test free-agent market

Yankee staff members have heard Mike Mussina say he is retiring. However, Mussina hasn't officially announced this past season - when he won 20 games for the first time in a borderline Hall of Fame career - was his last. Mussina, who will be 40 in December, hinted at retirement following his 20th win in Boston on the final day of the season. Since the Yankees won't hold organizational meetings until a week or two, they haven't decided if Mussina - or Andy Pettitte - fits into their 2009 plans. According to a Yankee official, Mussina wouldn't surprise anybody if he filed for free agency following the World Series to keep his options open. That way if he doesn't attract interest from teams fitting his desire - accessible from his Montoursville, Pa., home and with a team that has a chance to win - Mussina can retire. After CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, the free-agent pitching class drops off. Ben Sheets' health is an issue but his stuff great. After him it drops off to Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez.

He should test the market and make some dough, like he should also go for 300 wins also even if it takes hime 3 seasons.

The Moose would be much better out of the firestorm that the New York City market will be next season, with its new stadium, lofty expectations, impatient fan base (many of whom won't even be able to afford a ticket to the new stadium) and the specter of Hank Steinbrenner becoming even a bigger ****. I'm rooting for Mussina, as long as he leaves the Bronx. A perfect place for him would be in the National League. If they were planning to open the checkbook, the Padres would be a great place for Moose. But oh well...

Filing for free agency is a formality I think. Mussina will be in pinstripes or Montoursville in 08. Either way five years after he leaves the game he will be making a trip to Cooperstown.

Hope he goes anywhere but back to the Yanks. Not being a contract year makes him pitch like he did in 07 which is like a batting practice pitcher.

I'm thinking that would have been his only option regardless. If he stays healthy, he could be a nice back of the rotation starter for someone on the fringe.

He should go to the National league to get his 300 wins...

He had a great year but dont know if he can duplicate it. I think Andy Pettite has a better chance of having a good year then Mussina. If Mussina can bounce back I think Andy can also. National League would be a good fit for Mussina.

That is some cold-hearted ****, man.

moose should stay right where he is.. he will either pitch for the Yankee's or retire, he is born and raised in the NE and that is where he is going to stay. He may test, take some offers, but if his heart is in playing baseball again he will stay in NY.

He'll be back somewhere. How many guys retire coming off a 20 win season?

October 9, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Good pt 10Rings - no one leaves at a peak in their game. If he signs any where but a decent NL team, it would be a waste. If he gets nostalgic and heads to Baltimore - he'll never get to 300.

October 9, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Well if he did retire he went out with 20 wins which would be nice but something tells me he might try to stick around to try and get that win total closer to 300. He is a borderline HOF player and if he retired now odds are he never makes it in. Plus a 20 win season with a 3.37 era in the AL East is pretty good and would make a few teams willing to sign him for a 1-2 year deal.

I disagree-
Mussina has been on TWO teams his whole career.
He isn't the Free-agent go to the highest bidder kind of guy

That being said- I wouldn't bid on him-
offer a deal ONE YEAR.....if he takes it- fine, if not bye- thanks

Sandy Koufax: He retired after 1966 when he posted these numbers: 27 wins; 317 Ks; 77 BBs; 1.73 ERA; ).985 WHIP

Yes, I had to go look. Putting that out there was like putting a spliff in front of Atro, a drink in front of Justin, a Yee haw in front of Rebecca, well you get the idea.....

October 9, 2008  10:24 AM ET

).985 WHIP =0.985 WHIP.... doh!

October 9, 2008  10:28 AM ET

and since 1920 he is the only one to ever have done dooded retired after winning 20.

I didn't say that nobody does it......just making the point that it is rare.

And wasn't Koufax's retirement health related?

I wouldn't mind the Cardinals taking a look at him to boost their rotation.
