Lewis denies T.J. trade rumor

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis dumped a bucket of ice water on a hot topic: the possible trade of wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh. A story that surfaced on Tuesday, Oct. 7 - that the San Francisco 49ers could have interest in acquiring Houshmandzadeh from the Bengals before the Oct. 14 NFL trade deadline - got derailed before it gained any more steam. "Boy, that's a bad rumor, huh?" Lewis said on Wednesday. "Number one, you're going to get a club in trouble for tampering. That club has already been penalized once this year, very harshly. (The 49ers forfeited their fifth-round draft pick in an NFL sanction for tampering with Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs.) "Number two, what club in its right mind would trade for a player that's going to be an unrestricted free agent? Again, if you're going to start a rumor, make it a good one. OK? Make it something that makes some sense to people inside the NFL. It's unfortunate."

As a fan who hopes Marvin is buh-bye after this season, it pangs me to agree with him here. If it were a rumor about trading CJ85, I'd buy it but not TJ84. TJ is the only receiver on this squad I actually believe in; no offense AC83...

However, we all know Mikey really runs the team, so this could actually have legs. And would go along nicely with the "We ain't going nowhere this season so let's blow up the team" philosophy.

God I wish the would trade TJ...he doesn't deserve to have to play in the hell that is Cincinnati Bengals football. TJ is a stud.

FIRE MARVIN LEWIS

October 9, 2008  12:38 PM ET

Lewis is not going to be working long enough to fire anybody.
He should've been gone two years ago...lousy coach

Story going around NY has Bradshaw or Ward plus Steve Smith going to Cincinnati for TJ...If it pans out,,Great for both teams......

October 9, 2008  04:13 PM ET

Dude is on a sinking ship. He will be gone at the end of the season. TJ would be a great BUC

Ward? As in Hines? Because that's actually funny.

The absolutely disgusted, **** look on Lewis' face during the Bungles-'Boys game spoke volumes about the way that organization is being run.

this is one of the worst organizations I have ever witnessed. They lose more man games due to arrests than injuries. Coaching is garbage, and they have no idea what it takes to win. TJ deserves better than this crap.

peternink'npoop - the arrest-to-roster trouble is relatively recent. (ah, alliterration...) The ownership in Cincy just doesn't seem interested in fielding a quality team (and I mean that in multiple ways), and haven't for years. Mike Brown should be ashamed. He's turning into the East Coast Al Davis.

They would be stupid to trade away housh.

October 10, 2008  03:29 AM ET

Trade 85, if your going to trade.

October 11, 2008  01:19 AM ET
