Huskies eyeing Mizzou's Pinkel?

With the job security of Washington coach Tyrone Willingham seemingly further eroding in each week of the Huskies' 0-5 start, speculation in Seattle is that Willingham will be fired by the end of the season. If Washington does can Willingham, 11-30 in his fourth season, it might logically be expected to pursue Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel, who not only must be considered a hot commodity for resurrecting Missouri's program but also because he was an assistant at Washington for 12 years and still considers former Huskies coach Don James his mentor. James and Pinkel, in fact, spoke as recently as Wednesday. But one aspect of their conversation is indicative of one of the reasons Pinkel would seem unlikely to entertain an offer from Washington.

I thought Willingham was the "answer"? He is overrated and always has been. He had two good years at Stanford and one at ND with Bob Davies players. Send him to D2...

Don't do it Gary!!!!! You have a good thing goin' at Mizzou.

October 10, 2008  08:51 AM ET

^I'll second that.

It doesn't really matter who they get to coach... If u can't bring in good players they are always gonna suck... It's not just the coach thats holding them back... it's the whole football program... not many good players even think about going to wash

That sounds you hear is Nick Satan's phone ringing.

Cookie Monster is a better coach than Willingham, so anything is an upgrade.

I just can't see Missouri letting him go, expect a contract extension and raise in the near future.

October 10, 2008  10:10 AM ET

why would he want to leave a team that has finally reached some national recognition for the huskies? As far as historical programs it would be a lateral move to a team that has to be rebuilt - not going to happen. It's the BIG 12!

October 10, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Really. Is Washington a better job than Missouri? Probably not.

October 10, 2008  10:35 AM ET

While I don't think Missouri is any coach's "dream job," I just don't see Pinkel leaving Missouri for Washington. Kind of a lateral move if you ask me, and very much against the "bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" theory.

October 10, 2008  10:38 AM ET

I would actually argue that it is a better program, historically. Washington is about as low as they can get right now. Mizzou is about as high as they can get right now. There is only one way to go for both programs. It was just before last season that Pinkel was on the hot seat in Missouri if I am not mistaken. Take a look at Rutgers, Schiano should have left when he had the one good season.

Mizzou is riding Chase Daniel. He needs to get more money while he can. I doubt he can recruit another chase daniel to Columbia missouri. he got lucky cause Texas didnt recuit daniel

Washington historically is a much better job than Missouri and will be again with a proper coach. Washington has a lot of things going for it - best school for hundreds of miles around, beautiful location, historic strong recruiting ties to Hawaii and California, strong football tradition prior to the past six years, largest Greek system on the West Coast, large base of donors, etc. Right now there is rebuilding to be done after Tyrone has come through and wrecked the program but Washington has all the right factors to return to national prominence and stay there.

Nobody recruited Daniel, that is why is story is so much more appealing.

True, but 11-30 in 4 seasons is beyond terrible. This isn't Duke we are talking about.

Washington needs to get a STRONG recruiting coach. Just like at ND, the coach before Ty sucked and Willingham didn't do anything to make it better. So find a coach who can bring in the talented kids.

Are you kidding me??!! Have you been to Columbia MO.?? Lets see. Seattle, Washington[ Puget sound] verses Columbia, Mo....Go west my son, go west!! Washington University is one best settings/campuses I've ever seen.Willingham was never the answer and never will be. Great guy but not a D-1 coach. Get a real coach hired and the recruits will go there like old times. No brainer!

You could say the same thing about State College.

Really? A program that is in the top 20 all time in wins vs a program that is down in the 50's? At least your name is appropriate....
