ASU uninterested in hot local recruit
Chandler slot receiver/running back/defensive back Markus Wheaton received a football scholarship offer Thursday from Southern California. Wheaton has a top five: Oregon Oregon State Colorado (which he recently visited) California And now USC Where's Arizona State? According to a source, ASU hasn't pushed hard on the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Wheaton, one of the state's fastest players who is being recruited as an athlete. Wheaton, who is averaging 13.3 yards on 16 carries and has caught 16 passes for 302 yards, is expected to narrow his list to three before the Tempe Corona del Sol game Oct.17.

ASU might want to get in on this guy before he burns them when he plays against the Sun Devils in the future.

ASU has always done a horrible job recruiting in-state. While the talent level here is nothing compared to California every coach the Devils have had from Cooper to Erickson would rather focus on Cali kids and juco transfers. They have passed up quite a few in-state talents who are now starting for other big time Div I teams. It is partially because of a weak HS coaching community (that is getting better), a primarily white and Hispanic population (have to have those "fast black kids from LA"), and the inability to recognize value in effort, maturity or spirit versus "measurables". U of A does a much better job locally...and then can't use them effectively.

No wonder ASU didn't recruit me out of High School; I was one of the slow Black kids out of LA (LOL). For the record, I do not think your comment was racist, hopefully no one else will either.

"ASU has always done a horrible job recruiting in-state."
Although it's odd that they're not going for this kid. I think if you look at the actual roster you'll see that your comment is definately uninformed. (http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/asu-m-footbl-mtt.html)

Ridiculous comments and not sure what he author's agenda is. This kid has indicated a desire to play out of state and he was offered by ASU long before he was ever on USC's radar. This is an ill-informed article and I'm not sure what the author is trying to say exactly. The truth of it is that ASU has had several state players of the year recently and dominates UofA in in-state recruiting. Guys like Terrell Suggs, Todd Heap, Zach Miller, Adam Archuletta, and Robert James were all HUGE gets for ASU. Recent recruits like Kyle Caldwell, Chris McGaha, Keegan Herring, Kerry Taylor, Gerell Robinson, Dexter Davis, Mike Nixon were also nationally recruited and chose to stay home. Two of the top defensive linemen in the country and local products #1 ranked Devon Kennard and #7 Corey Adams hold ASU in high regard and are not considering UofA at all. So to say that ASU has recruited poorly in state is retarded and to say that they are not showing interest in Markus Wheaton is totally false!

Well allow me to retort....
Buster: 39 kids from AZ out of 70-90 players is not a great job with in-state recruiting. How many are starters? Kids from Cali? 38. How many of them are starters? My contention was that they didn't recruit D-I starters from AZ well. The marquee kids go to USC, or BYU, etc. I don't blame them.
laclipps: Wow, dinging me for being racist while you make a veiled derogatory comment about Mormons? Not that I am one. I played for Mt. View's rival in HS. I am not at all upset that Mt View doesn't send more to ASU :).
smoothdevil: "Terrell Suggs, Todd Heap, Zach Miller, Adam Archuletta, and Robert James " Robert James?? Who? Anyone other than you or a die hard ASU fan know who he is? And Archuleta was a WALK ON (look it up). ASU didn't even want him. And I was nationally recruited from coast to coast. Anyone who gets a freakin' form letter is "being recruited". Not that Rivals.com is the end-all-be-all of recruit ranking, but Herring didn't even make the Rivals top 60 (!) RBs in the nation in 2005 as a recruit. And ASU only landed 4 of the top 15 players in AZ that same year, and never more than 5 of the top15-20 players in the state from 2003 till 2008 (after the breakout season). So I'll take that label of being retarded for saying ASU has recruited poorly in-state...if you'll admit you're an idiot.
I did not intend to sound racist at all. There are plenty of "fast black kids" from AZ also. I was trying to be ironic or sarcastic regarding the perception of some programs/coaches that "fast black kids from LA" are what they need instead of mining in-state talent no matter what color. Of course that sounds racist also. I'll stop while I'm behind.
Cheers

More nonsense! You say that Adam Archuletta was a walk-on at ASU but we did not even have an interest in him? What the hell kind of sense does that make? We cared so little about him that we invited him to walk on and then offered him a scholarship?? Then you back that up with another gem asking who outside of me or any die hard ASU fan knows who Robert James is. Well the Atlanta Falcons decided to draft him to apparently someone else knows who he is.. Levi Jones was also a local walk on and did quite well in the NFL but based on your logic we probably showed no interest in him.. Keegan Herring was recruited by little schools like Oregon, UCLA, Florida, USC and Texas so he must have been one of the weaker players out of Arizona.. Guess we just did not get anyone out of the state that year.. Chris McGaha who was the gatorade state player of the year commited to us. Dexter Davis who is one of the premier defensive ends in the Pac-10 also commited that year as well as Richard Tuitu'u who had offers from BYU, Utah, Missouri, and Cal. Your comments hold no water and it's obvious that you know NOTHING about ASU and our recruiting history. Apparently you just go around making up garbage. Arizona is not California or Texas so we don't have to take 15 of the top players to have local success. Sure there are guys like Udofia, Griffen, and Autry who wanted to go out of state but that is true everywhere. While we don't always get every great player that comes out of Arizona, we get most of them and have had a great history and success with the local coaches and prep athletes. Nice try but USC and BYU don't pick up all of the elite players in Arizona. Robinson spurned Notre Dame and USC to attend ASU and commited on national tv. Max Hall who is tearing it up at BYU was an ASU recruit and opted to transfer due to the qb talent at ASU. He is a good friend of Rudy Carpenter by the way.. I just don't buy that you know anything about recruiting in Arizona and your comments are ridiculous! So if all the elite kids go to BYU and USC, how can you account for Suggs, Heap, Miller, Archuletta, and Caldwell commiting to ASU.. Seriously? How come we had 3 guys on our roster who were state players of the year if we do a poor job?

Walk on does not equal interest, or being recruited. How that escapes you, escapes me. If you walked on then the teams coaches did not think highly enough of you to give you a scholarship outright, invited or otherwise. Six to 7 starters of the possible 22 are from AZ. From Cali? 9. And James? He was dropped by the Falcons, and might be on a practice roster. Until I looked him up I had no idea he made All PAC 10 and no one else reading the comments about this SI blurb did either (yes, that is hyperbole).
As for Kennard and Adams? Do the names Craig Roh and Griffin mean anything to you? I bet ASU gets neither Kennard nor Adams.
Put the Kool Aid down. "Levi Jones was also a local walk on and did quite well in the NFL but based on your logic we probably showed no interest in him." Insane, inane.

The endless stream of news bits was bad enough reporting every time a player visited a campus.
Just how hard up is SI that they report when teams AREN'T inteested in players?
Maybe they can turn this into a whole series about every Div 1 team that wasn't interested in this kid...
