Anaheim 'confident' of getting NBA team

The Los Angeles Lakers made their annual pilgrimage to Anaheim Tuesday night to play a preseason game at Honda Center. For some local fans, it was an exciting chance to welcome their favorite team and send a reminder that Lakers fans come from Orange County, too. But for others, it was a reminder that Anaheim - home to world-champion professional baseball and hockey - has yet to land a National Basketball Association team. That could change soon, an Anaheim official said this week. "I'm pretty confident that, maybe not next year, but within the next five years, Anaheim will have its own NBA team," said Greg Smith, executive director of sports, entertainment and conventions for the city.

I think we have enough teams now. And even if Anaheim has its own NBA team, it is not like they are gonna win it all right away....

In my opinion, it takes at least 4-5 years for a new team to be strong enough to earn the ticket to the playoff.

Anaheim will do very fine in the NBA market. If hockey and baseball can survive there then basketball will definitely survive and succeed there. You don't know they might be the Florida Marlins of the NBA. Should we call them the Anaheim Mickeys of Los Angeles, of Orange County, of California?

Just move the Clippers out of Staples and into an arena in Anaheim. It makes more sense then putting a third NBA team into that area.

That's Laker territory. Good luck filling the seats.

October 10, 2008  09:20 AM ET

yeah move the clippers because they have to many teams in california already

That makes more sense than anything else, and I'm sure the Lakers and Clippers would be glad to have their own facility.

Here we go again...........BTW hasnt the state of Cali files for more state funding from the USA goverment? How inthe hell is a state that can`t keep up with its public works payments support any more teams?

October 10, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Definitely move the Clippers into their own house.... and rename them. There's no water in Anaheim, no docks, no boats to be a "clipper"...... but then again... there's no Lakes in LA either..... unless you count the Silver Lake Resevoir.

I won't hate on them too much if they become the Anaheim Braves and bring back the blue and whites... or the orange and black classics.

October 10, 2008  09:50 AM ET

Don't waste your money. The people in LA will always root for the Lakers. The majority of them don't have the sac to root for a team that doesn't have a championship history like the Lakers.

October 10, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Here we go again, if they get a team in Anaheim, what will they be called?

Be creative folks!

October 10, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Yeah, LA needs another team. Oh wait...here you go Anaheim...welcome your Anaheim Clippers. You'll take the Clippers and like it.

October 10, 2008  10:22 AM ET

Oh right...the name...ok...let's name the team after something Anaheim is well known for. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome your Anaheim Holy ****! It costs how much to get into Disneyland!? Now starting at center...

October 10, 2008  10:40 AM ET

The Anaheim Braves sounds like a good name.

October 10, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Move the Clippers back to San Diego, I think it was.

October 10, 2008  11:21 AM ET

no, no more nba teams. not just because the league doesn't need anymore, but because i don't want to hear another dumb2ss nickname. the Thunder? urgh...

October 10, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Donald Sterling won't move the team from Staples. They tried before to get him to do that and he refused. He's making too much money at Staples, he'd be a fool to move.

October 10, 2008  12:03 PM ET

yeah anahiem should have it's own NBA team and hopefully I'll be the owner. They also need to take the clippers out of L.A

October 10, 2008  12:10 PM ET

I think sterling would make more money if he moved. No competition!! Being in the same place as the lakers always puts them in the shadows. It's time to start fresh!!

The NBA needs another team???? Oh hell no. They have far too many as it is. Why not create stable teams? Vancouver went to Memphis, and from what I have read, might not be there very long. This year Seattle moved to Oklahoma City. Previously, Charlotte moved to New Orleans and then they put a new team in Charlotte??????

If anything, moving the Clippers to Anaheim makes more sense than putting a third team in that market. With the Clippers being the redheaded step-child to the Lakers, what would a third team do? Nothing. They would be moving that team in 4-5 years just like Vancouver.
