Red flag on Teixeira

Mark Teixeira, the soon to be free agent, is a perfect fit for a lot of teams including the New York Yankees, who will have a lot of money to throw around this winter with some hefty contracts coming off the books. But in exploring the fit between the Yankees and Teixeira, there were some words of caution offered by a former teammate through the New York Post. "The statistics will be there, but this is not a player who will make anyone else on the team better," said a former teammate of Teixeira's. "The numbers indicate an elite player, but if you watch him every day you will realize he is a very good player, not elite." There was a lot of chatter that Teixeira and his solid approach to the game and particularly at the plate would rub off on the likes of Vladimir Guerrero, Howie Kendrick and Erick Aybar, which is ridiculous. Guerrero was given a huge contract doing things his way, so what incentive does he have to change at this point in his career? To think he would become a more patient hitter with Teixeira around is just naive. That is on Guerrero, Kendrick and Aybar, though, not Teixeira.

How on earth does a baseball player make his teammates better? It's not like football, basketball or hockey where he can pass the ball to teammates, block or set screens for teammates, check for teammates, etc. The only way a baseball player can make teammtes better is by providing protection in the batting order and if Tex's teammates aren't able to take advantage of that, how does that become Texiera's fault?

Tex and NYY would be a great fit...much to my BoSox's chagrine.

I get the concept of players having some influence on their teammates, but that is really a very small group. Lets face it, especially in baseball, players are more driven by the payday that could happen for them. How many times have we seen players step it up in a "walk year"? What's really rediculous, is you would think we are talking about high school players, these are highly paid adults.

Keeping Tex makes a lot more sense that Rodriguez...trade Frankie to a National League team, resign Tex and go after Sabathia or Lowe. The pieces are nearly in place, just a few minor adjustments are needed..

How do you trade a free agent to the National League?? You sir, are a ****!

It's funny how you can put up great #'s........
and not be on great teams (other than his short stint with LAA)
and when you don't win- you're a 'cancer'
Give me a break-

October 10, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Great day in the morning, I would mop the dugout for the interest off of what these guys make. I didn't say I would do a good job, ya know....

October 10, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Signing Tex should be the Angels #1 priority. #2 should be offloading Guerrero. #3 should be Sabathia or Lowe (although there may not be enough $ for both Tex and a frontline starter). Forget K-Rod, he ain't coming back -- they know he will break down before he earns whatever contract he'll get, and they're OK with Arrondondo as his replacement.

October 10, 2008  09:29 AM ET

Saying a former teammate makes this a non-story... Tex is a hired gun, my 9-yr old still thinks he's great, and when the Rangers played Angels at the end of the season, he hit her a homerun! LOL... she hated it was against the Rangers, but she believed what Tex said, that the Rangers traded him... she is afterall, 9, and naive... Tex did what Scott Boras would have him do, go where the money is, instead of wasting his career in Arlington like Michael Young. Hats off from a fan to Michael Young, but I feel for someone with his talent not even able to make the playoffs season after season... I imagine that once Tex has seen the apex of his career, then he'll settle down to a long term contract on a team where he can retire. The Rangers a farm team, nothing more... and it's not the manager's fault, he puts the talent on the field the GM and owner gives him. How about removing 5-10 rows of seats in the outfield and backing the fence up a bit, then HIRE SOME FRIGGIN' PITCHING!!! But I digress, any team would be better with Tex in the line-up and playing first base, everyone whines about A-Rod too. Go Joe Torre!!!

October 10, 2008  09:40 AM ET

One way he can make his teammates better is by catching the erratic throws they make to first base. He has the sweet left handed swing perfect for yankees stadium. I remember the game where he hit that grand slam against the Yanks in that crazy game late in August. He would be a great fit for any team. Great Defense Great Bat Patient Hitter! IF the Yankees get him they will get a higher batting avg. player with great defense then Giambi probably a less fewer walks. Dont know his stats on that.

October 10, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Im sorry but i don't really see an appeal of Tex.. sure he is a good player, but the Yankees dont need another bat in the line-up. WE NEED PITCHING... Giambi has said he would take less money to stay in NY, plain and simple the first thing that needs to be addressed is the pitching staff..

Yankees scored 200 runs less than they did in 2007 and wasted a decent amount of good pitching efforts by not scoring many runs. Teixeira doesn't need to be elite. He just needs to be better than Giambi was. And while Tex might not have the power numbers to match him he does have some power to go along with good defense, a good patient approach at the plate and a good batting average. The Yanks were forced to carry too many 1b on the bench because Giambi couldn't play his position every game so by getting a 1b who can actually play most of the games at 1b the Yanks won't have to carry as many 1b and could improve their bench also.

The Yankees do need pitching but they have enough to send out a starting 5 now that some players are healthy again. Whether they can handle it or not is another question. I still feel since you are dealing with young players that the Yanks need to be patient. Hughes, Kennedy, Rasner underperformed this year but I would give them at least half a season to see if they can pitch in NY well. Because right now there trade value isn'y exactly high so worst case scenario they bomb out in 2009 and you demote them back to AAA. I just think the Yanks need to show some patience there. I do however agree that they need to sign a pitcher like CC, Burnett or Lowe (Sheets strikes me as a more talented Pavano so I wouldn't sign him).

Anyone who thinks Texiera is a difference maker doesnt watch him real close. The guy does most of his damage in blowout games where his stats are meaningless. He will put up the numbers atthe end of the year but he is a lot like Arod in that he accumulates most of his stats in blowout games when his team is either winning by 6 or 7 runs or they are losing by 6 or 7 runs. Hes been like that his entire career plus he never hits for the first 2 months of the season so if youre counting on him at the beginning of the year then youre gonna be out of the race by the all star break because he wont produce.

October 10, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Odd take. Baseball is about as much of an individual sport as there is [other than golf]. I don't know who wouldn't want his bat in their lineup. In addition, he's a pretty good fielder as well without any off the field issues.

Sour grapes in LA????

October 10, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Teixeira just cares about Teixeira. He is definitely a clubhouse cancer. That is all the Yankers need is another Nim-Rod.

Sounds a little like A Rod

If Teixeira is that bad then who should the Yankees try to sign or trade for the play 1b?
