Recruit spurns Notre Dame for Duke

It would have been one of Mike Brey's biggest coaching victories, despite taking place before the 2008-09 campaign even began -- and having nothing to do with on-court action in the present day, actually. But it was not to be: Highly touted prep forward Ryan Kelly made an oral commitment to Duke on Thursday evening. Kelly likely would have been the landmark recruit of the Brey era, and the Irish staff certainly went all-in in recruiting the 6-foot-9 forward, criss-crossing the country to watch him play whenever possible. But ultimately Kelly opted to join the Blue Devils instead of the Irish, Wake Forest, North Carolina and a host of others.

Enjoy the next 4 years as much as you can kid... Your either going to wash out at Duke... Or do well... And get your jock handed to you... By legit NBA guys

Or, perhaps he is trying to sheet gold like his former boss?

Enjoy Durham where Coach K is going to bulk you up, and stick you under the goal setting screens on the baseline for his go-to shooter. I watched Kelly last year and will again this season. . . This kid is special, he has the ball-handling skills and soft touch to be a great inside-outside threat. And with a 6'10 center on his high school squad he will be able to showcase his whole skill-set. All I can say is SHAVLIK RANDOLPH. Coach K turned the #3 Prep Player into a perminate screen for JJ Redick. Good luck Ryan, and I hope to see some good battles from you against my Heels.

Ahhh Shavlik Randolph, one of the biggest busts in recent memory. The TRUTH takes DEElight in the misfortune of Coach Shechefski

I think the bigger headline would have been he spurned North Carolina? Guess Notre Dame makes a better headline.

This picture would make a perfect ad for Ex-Lax...or Pepto Bismol

Damnit ....lol u beat me to the punch I was gonna say erase the background and shop in a bathroom and you're all set

Too bad for the kid. He could have been the catalyst in an up and coming program, but will now be just another player in a program that appears to be plateauing and where the coach may not last for four more years.

You think this kid actually might value the education he will get at Duke? What's this world coming to?

October 10, 2008  02:59 PM ET

Is yhis ND football or basketball? With the headline you think football.

Shavlik Randolph? Hopefully this kid actually performs to expectations.

October 10, 2008  04:42 PM ET

Yah, K definitely has a bad track record with getting players big money in the NBA (Most 1st round draft picks of any NCAA school). Plus, they never really amount to much (Hill, Boozer, Brand, Maggette, Deng, Dunleavy, etc...)

Big mistake Kelly. You should have at least gone to a school with a track record of success in college. Loser.

If it was football it would really be a nice headline.Only because I cannot see a kid "spurn" Duke for ND in football.

coach k hates black people

October 10, 2008  07:54 PM ET

Duke hate makes me giggle.

October 10, 2008  10:16 PM ET

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise. If you can go to Duke over ND that???s an easy choice.

October 11, 2008  04:10 AM ET

Ahh, Duke hate makes me laugh as well. You know why? Because UNC will never in a million years match up academically...the truth hurts. Oh, you mean he may actually have considered something BEYOND the basketball program...hmm, interesting...
