Sabathia, Burnett top Yankee wish list
The Yanks have roughly $88 million in salary potentially vanishing, and Yankees officials already are building toward a consensus how to use those dollars. Based on multiple interviews the initial plan looks like this: 1. Sign at least one and, preferably two, starters from among free agents CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. 2. Re-sign either Mike Mussina or Andy Pettitte. 3. With the rotation deepened by free agency, use pitching prospects in particular to obtain a prime-age, high-ceiling player at first or in the outfield. Then use minor trades or free agency to address other areas.

not sure why they are stuck on Moose or Petitte....it is highly doubtful moose will have anything close to waht he did this year. Petitte looked like himself in the beginning of the year...and his post all star break turn around never happened as it usually would.

Cashman , Cashman, CAshman....when will you learn? All your expensive free agent pickups over the last 7 yrs have earned you exactly SQUAT! Why cant you be more like the Red Sox? We learned the hard way too. After years of free agent BS, we currently have 6, SIX Red Sox position starters who came from the Sox farm system..and that includes last year's ROTY Dustin Pedroia and this years AL Co-MVP candidate Kevin Youkilis as well as JAcoby Ellsbury, Jed Lowrie, Kevin Cash. And pitchers Pappelbon, the best closer in baseball, and lefty extraordinairre Jon Lester, and Manny Del Carmen..all farm hands. Yup, you just gotta love dem Sox and their home grown talent...even if your a Yankee fan.

Why anyone would want to be in New York for the 2009 season is beyond me. C.C. is smart enough I assume to avoid the disaster the Yankees have become, and will grow as in a new stadium and an ever-growing **** in Hank. The Angels, Dodgers, or Giants (in my dream world, my Padres too) seem like a better home for C.C. to me. But of course the good 'ol money factor supersedes everything so...

Make no mistake about it my friend. Mariano Rivera is STILL the best closer in baseball. He has finished the year with a sub 2 ERA for the 7th time! No closer has ever done that more than 3! Not one. Not all the hall of famers nor any other "big time closer". As Casey Stengel would say, "You can look it up"! Oh, and as for Papelbon, he was close to being under 2 this year, until the Yankees rocked him in that last game, raising his ERA over 2. Shame, Jon, my boy, maybe next year. Note the correct spelling of his last name!

Ummm...what does this article have to do with Rivera? I guess you need to wave the pinstripe flag whenever your Yankees are losing. Oh well.
As far as the article, I'm sure there are about 25 other teams that have those 2 pitchers on their wish list too. Let's see, the Yankees want the 2 best pitchers on the market. How is this news again?

How is that six "position" players? Your math is a little shady! You have 3 maybe 4 (if Cora wasnt hurt) "postion" players.
I do agree with you about building from within though. But also dont over look that they have spent a ton of money in free agency as well. i.e. Drew,Lowell, Okajima, and Dice-K.

What amazes me is how they are making a huge deal about the 88 million coming off the books, but even when you take that away they are still going to have the NUMBER 1 payroll in baseball.

I guess the 6 would be:
Ellsbury
Lowrie
Pedroia
Youkilis
SP:
Lester
CL:
Papelbon.
The bigger point. The following players are signed long term or have their rights held by the Sox because of the youth movement:
Pedroia, Youkilis, Papelbon, Delcarmen, Ellsbury, Lester, Masterson, Bowden, Lowrie. Those 9 players will be on the 25 man roster next year and for the next several years. They also have Okijima and Matsuzaka long term as well. Not a bad core team. The Yankees, on the other hand, have no youth movement and have to buy up the talent and try and make a team with 0 chemistry.

Does every player desire to go to NY? Other teams sign big time free agents too! Also, the Sox have 45 million coming off the books, no one seems to discuss that though.

A "position" player is usually considered someone that plays everyday in the field (i.e. Dustin, or Youk) not a pitcher or closer. As for Lowrie he is ok but he is a backup playing bc someone got injured.
I agree with the team "chemistry" thing. You look at the Dodgers almost everyone on that team is young and has come up through the system and the same goes for the Rays and Phillies.
When watching the Yanks they dont have that playful young energetic type of player to keep everyone loose and having a good time.

Its just funny how the Red Sox are the "model" to build a team now that they have started winning. I mean they do still have one of the top payrolls in baseball even bringing up these young guys!
The majority of teams in the MLB develop all their players and bring them up through the system. The big difference is that those teams at the same time doesnt go out and spend tons of money on free agents.
