Fulmer ready for heat after loss

There will be no earmuffs for Phillip Fulmer this week. The Tennessee coach said he fully expects to hear the biting words from critics, and some from his very own fan base. "You stay in this business long enough, you will have ups and downs," Fulmer said following UT's loss at Georgia on Saturday. "We've won a lot more than we lost. I've been disappointed in every dang one of them that we've lost. I've felt like this. I'm not going to do anything but keep fighting." UT stands at 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Southeastern Conference. Many believed he was already on the hot seat entering the game, and with the loss to another league rival, it's not expected to cool down anytime soon.

Perhaps unfair, but this could be the end of Fulmer with the Vols.

Talk about a pre-emptive strike. Either he is paranoid or knows his team is not that good. No one is calling for his head - yet.

Well, perhaps the "F" bomb should make a schedule change. In other words, like USC and Wisconsin....ect., select an easier schedule to start the season, have a few "tougher" schools in the middle, then ride out the rest of the season with 4 more easier schools. Guaranteed to get you a bowl game at least! lol, well, maybe not the Badgers....lmao.

It was Georgia...come on.

October 12, 2008  02:31 PM ET

Tennessee would be stupid to get rid of Fulmer and if they did, there would be someone knocking on his door within the hour. Its just like Mack Brown at Texas, he is suppose to beat Oklahome every year, no matter what.

October 12, 2008  02:52 PM ET

So, who could a better job?

Be more like texass. Send free hookers for the pollters to get their votes to put texass number 1

I think the Georgia loss would not be so bad if
1). Tennessee would have beat UCLA
2). ULCA would not have lost to BYU by 59 points
3). The VOLS would not have been taken to the shed by Florida two years in a row(I think if they had played FLorida in a good game, loss would have been okay)
4). Too many years of unfulfilled expectations with a very talented team

I have several friends who are VOL fans and this is pretty much what I hear from them.

Fulmer is in trouble.... Big trouble.

Let's be honest... During Fulmer's tenure (with the exception the exception of the one year they won the National Championship ), Tennessee has not been all that competitive in the race for the SEC championship... and with Alabama, LSU, Florida and Georgia
all elevating their programs, Tennessee is falling farther and farther behind.

The Vol fans will not sit on their hands and watch the program wallow in mediocrity. They will do exactly what Alabama did... go out and get a top flight coach to resurrect their program.

October 12, 2008  04:13 PM ET

Well, they won the SEC East just last year but they have certainly taken a back seat to Florida and Georgia in their own division.

October 12, 2008  04:14 PM ET

It's kind of like the Lloyd Carr syndrome. Every year huge expectations but every year disappointment.

October 12, 2008  05:14 PM ET

What the hell is up with that "vest" that Phulmer is wearing? Is he hoping that if he wears a sweater vest that he'll be more like Jim Tressel? Good luck with that one!

October 12, 2008  06:35 PM ET

Fulmer is being like Jim Tressel....the whipping boy of the SEC

that was good

Very few coaches can get a team to the top and then maintain that. Coaches and programs run out of steam. Other teams catch up to them. Fulmer has had a good run at UT. If he can weather this storm, perhaps he can bring them up again (see Paterno, PSU). But, Vol fans are tough. They might not give him the opportunity to see if he has it in him to elevate the program again. Last year's Division championship was almost like a perfect storm. I don't think there were many people though at the end of the season that believed UT was the best team in that Division.

October 12, 2008  08:11 PM ET

Tracy I agree with youR thoughts... Tennessee was NOT the best team in the eastern division at the end of the season...Mybe not even the second best... and yes the Vols benefited from "the perfect storm" as you put it...

The problem is when you look back over the years, there have not been enough "perfect storms" for the Vol fans to cut Fulmer much slack...

Tennessee has been the whipping boy of Florida for as long as anyone can remember...and with Alabama coming back strong... Georgia coming into it's own... a Florida team that seems to reload each year ... Tennessee will soon find themselves totally behind the power curve ( if not already ) and loosing ground fast.

He may survive 2008 but trust me when I tell ya... HIS DAYS ARE NUMBERED...

October 12, 2008  09:44 PM ET

While tailgating for the UGA v UT game I didn't talk to a single UT fan/alum that wanted to keep Fulmer around and I was polling all of them. He will be gone very soon even though I think UT will upset Bama in obnoxiousville...they have to win at some point right??

October 12, 2008  10:15 PM ET

I don't think you get rid of Fulmer, he is a good Christian man, and he has cleaned up alot of these so called dirtbags from the team, he has a new O-Coordinator who is coming from smalltime football to the big boys, he is dealing with what we all thought would be a promising quarterback, who has talked the talk, but not walked the walk. He brings in good recruits, and not all are going to be good, but they aren't trash either. I think that the way the yahoo country bumpkins that boo, are very much responsible as well, it doesn't give the players anyone to hang the hearts with. If Ainge was quarterbacking we'd be 4-1, but lets just ride with the Gunslinger for the rest of the season, I still feel this team will go 7-5. It's okay to be upset when we don't win but leave Phil alone till after the folida game next year. GO VOLS!!!!!

October 12, 2008  10:17 PM ET

that's supposed to be the Florida game next year.

October 12, 2008  10:46 PM ET

Vol fan....You can have Dan Hawkins (and his son)...Cheap
