What's wrong with Beckett?

Despite the avowals of the Red Sox that Josh Beckett is fine, it seems difficult to understand where the ineffectiveness is coming from. Pitchers don't just lose multiple miles per hour off their fastballs, as Beckett has, without something being wrong. Could it be the elbow he dealt with in August? Perhaps, though it's hard to believe the Sox would put their ace in jeopardy. Could it be the oblique? Sure, even as Beckett and others say that hasn't been a problem. Could it be the rust of having pitched little in the final months of the season (34 1/3 innings since Aug. 17)? Possibly. Instead, command and consistency have taken the blame, justified or not. With that diminished fastball - and diminished results - the focus now turns to a possible Game 6, the next scheduled start for Beckett. When asked if he would be making that start, Beckett said, "Yeah. Did you guys hear something?"

Nothing wrong with the boy. The Rays had to win and their boys came thru in the clutch. You think Beckett is Superman or some Ben Affleck or something? He just human nature...you know. That's right. So he was soft, don't cry....he will be stronger nexxt time. Them boys on the Rays are gonna be tuff and determined not to have their meat taken from them!!

Good mornin' Justin .... too early for what? This thread? This discussion? Bond 007? If it's the latter, well I agree ... it's always too early for Bond 007. ;)

Yes, Yes and Yes.

Waiting for becca to weigh in on this thread. It's obvious Josh is struggling ... whether due to pain, rustiness, or lack of confidence ... I hope he will be ready for his next start, should it be needed. I'm sure glad I'm not Terry Francona! It's stressful enough just being a fan of a playoff team in a close series!

Beckett's career goes good year/bad year. This is the first time he had a sub par year and still went to the playoffs. That being said he isn't 100 percent.
Somehow I don't think Francona's having too tough a time. He doesn't seem to let anything get to him.

What's wrong with Beckett? His face is too fat, makes me want to punch it. Next question. And by the way, Cyder, I'm still at the Mickey D's down the street from your place, I can't seem to shake these munchies ...

nothing's wrong with him he justs sucks right now.

October 13, 2008  09:11 AM ET

Beckett's next start would be in Tampa, right? I like how it lines up for Tampa ... all they need is one win in Boston to take it back to St. Pete, and then Beckett would be starting the first game there, I think ... GO RAYS! Oh, good morning, Catwoman. Nice lookin' football team you've got there.

Exactly, that's Beckett's pattern througout his career. Remember the whole blister thing?

I was dozing but the roar of the crowd woke me up when the final run scored. I work Sunday's so I was not a happy camper.

What's wrong with him? Nothing. He got lit up. It happens. Kazmir didn't fare much better either. Some games you just don't have your best stuff and that is what happened. Give the Rays hitters credit but Beckett left a lot of pitches out over the plate and he paid for it.

I can think of one thing I would like to do for five hours. :)))))

Myself and a few others have said this past year that Beckett is sooner than later going to be visitng the disabled list and after that will not be the same pitcher he was previously. This not sour rapes. It is not being negative about the guy. It is just a feeling from watching his career.
