Gonzalez wants out of K.C.

You could see that the losing was getting to Tony Gonzalez. Even at the end of last year, he talked privately about "being open" to a trade out of Kansas City. He could see, like everyone could see, that the Chiefs were about to go into a long and painful rebuilding process. And he also knew he was about to turn 32. He said that if the Chiefs were starting over, they should probably trade him. But again, that was private talk -- not specifically off the record, but not on the record, either. It was just a man speaking out of frustration, a great player who could see the end of his career approaching and did not want to spend it losing games for a going-nowhere team. He said that if the Chiefs wanted to trade him, that might be the best thing for everybody. He asked me not to write it. I did not. Then last week, after that shameful 34-0 loss to Carolina, Gonzalez's frustration was even more apparent. He said that he hoped the Chiefs would trade him during the bye week. He said that he no longer felt a part of things in Kansas City. "Something has to change," he said. He was still a bit angry that Chiefs coach Herm Edwards and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey had not helped him break the tight-end record for most receiving yards at home against Denver. He finished three yards short and ended up breaking the record in the most meaningless fashion the next week in Carolina. More, though, he felt like many of his teammates just didn't get it.

Not giving Gonzales the opportunity to break the record at home confirmed Herm Edwards' poor decision making skills. Gonzales deserves better treatment. Herm Edwards AND Carl Peterson need to be sent packing.

Can't imagine why. Oh, and please CBS affiliate in my area, please please please stop showing Chiefs games every Sunday. Please?

The problem is Gonzalez signed a five year contract extension in 2007 making him the highest paid TE. His cap value this year is a little over $5 million. He is getting older. He would be a great pick up for some team ( like the Giants ), but then what? Not sure they have the cap room or the want to fulfill the rest of that contract. He is not a young man. The Chiefs would be dumping that contract off too. That changes the draft pic you would receive.

Hope you're enjoying Herm & his spectacular coaching style

That being said - Tony-
SUCK IT UP.
You are a veteran, getting paid very hansomely-
it is not your inherent right to be on a good or winning team
even though you might be amongst the top 5 TE ever
- How about the contract YOU voluntarily signed?

Herm Edwards is not a good coach, the rebuilding process will take too long under him so I think KC should send him to the Giants so he can win a super bowl.

October 13, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Eagles fans want him, but how dumb is that. You franchise tagged a mediocre TE ( Smith) which means you are paying him like he is a pro bowl level TE. I do not see a GM doing that and then taking on Gonzalez's contract. You would have $11-$12 million tied up in that position. It would be an NFL record though.

He ain't going nowhere however I think he would be a nice fit for the Giants but I can't see Jerry Reece giving up the high draft pick the Chiefs would be seeking.

October 13, 2008  10:05 AM ET

I have a feeling the Reese is going to pull off the trade for a 4th or later draft pick. He is set to make a lot but i believe if the Giants cut him in a couple years they would not take a cap hit. If i remember correctly, the Chiefs would take the cap hit now. can anyone back me up on this?

October 13, 2008  10:21 AM ET

MWS12183...good question. I do not know. It does change the dynamics of the whole thing though.

October 13, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Gee, what a surprise. When Herman Edwards was hired Gonzalez have demanded to be traded then. Edwards is a born loser, just like Norv Turner. These guys are good assistants but terrible at being the leader of the pack.

October 13, 2008  11:10 AM ET

As a Giants fan i give up a 3rd and/or later picks but nothing higher. If we can get him for that price we have to do it. TG is a professional and would fit in perfectly. He doesn't carry a big ego and wants to win.

October 13, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Finish your career with KC, it looks better with H.O.F. voters! No SB, in KC, I know its hard!

October 13, 2008  11:44 AM ET

If KC can find someone, I hope Gonzales gets traded. That guy has been one of the best players in the NFL and he has not even won a post-season game. Not one. I just hope he stays out of the NFC East.

October 13, 2008  12:08 PM ET

They have Huard, who once was a 'Fin, let's see if we can't Gonzalez for a draft pick & Beck for him...

October 13, 2008  12:37 PM ET

King Carl should have been axed years and years ago...

October 13, 2008  12:42 PM ET

Gonzalez wants out of K.C.

Me too .... if I was him!

October 13, 2008  12:52 PM ET

Why are teams hesitating??

If your a contender jump on it.

Your a contender and expect to make the super bowl so you will have to give up a late 3rd rounder DO it.

I bet with a contender TONY would play 5 more years

October 13, 2008  12:53 PM ET

Can you blame him?

October 13, 2008  12:59 PM ET

It would be lovely to see Mr. Gonzalez wearing a Bills jersey (e.g., conditional third plus Robert Royal for Gonzo; etc.). Maybe even in time for this weekend's game vs the Chargers?

Us Bills fans can dream, anyway. Leave us alone: we've suffered more than enough already. We deserve a little sunshine.

there is talk of the Giants being interested. I'm all for it if it takes a 4th rounder. this is a straight salary dump, so the Chiefs will not receive any value in return for Gonzalez. tight end is one of the only only weak spots on this team. Addressing it would make a lot of sense.

In the end I think Gonzo stays put. Kevin Boss is signed for next to nothing and is developing into a solid tight end. I'm not sure the Giants have the cap room. Burress just got a raise and so did Uminyora.
