OSU coach denies running up score

Oregon State coach Mike Riley said a touchdown pass by back-up quarterback Sean Canfield in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game wasn't intended to embarrass Washington State. Canfield threw a 39-yard TD pass to reserve wide receiver Damola Adeniji with 7:35 left in the game and OSU leading 59-13. The Beavers won the game, 66-13, with the most points they have ever scored in a Pacific 10 Conference game. Riley said what was supposed to be a "little corner route'' to reserve wide receiver Casey Kjos turned into a big play when Canfield saw no free safety in the middle of the field and changed to a post route to Adeniji. "Sean did what he was trained to do,'' said Riley. The play angered some of the Washington State players, who felt the Beavers were rubbing it in their faces. Riley said on Sunday, "I feel bad that they feel bad about it. From the bottom of my heart, I did not do anything to try and disrespect that team.''

The game is 60 minutes long. Play better defense and that wouldnt happen

October 13, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Grow up!

October 13, 2008  10:06 AM ET

LMAO. They have given up an average of 40 pts a game before this one. Now it is 44+. If other teams scoring on them makes them angry, then they must be the angriest men in America.

October 13, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Running up the score happens. Quit complaining about it and play better D.

October 13, 2008  10:32 AM ET

I think they have bigger problems. As of June 24, 2008they had 25 arrests in 18 months to players on that football team....

October 13, 2008  11:21 AM ET

yea, tell your second stringers to go in there an lay down. if i am that second or third stringer in the game, i am going to bust you in the mouth to prove myself!!!

October 13, 2008  11:33 AM ET

"Sorry for whooping your &$$. Here's a Hallmark card."

October 13, 2008  11:57 AM ET

At least there is a PAC10 team capable of scoring that many points.

October 13, 2008  01:05 PM ET

If WSU defense can't stop OSU offense from scoring, that's their problem. Deal with it and quit whining like a bunch of pansies.

October 13, 2008  01:16 PM ET

Ryan - what a dumb thing to say. If anything, Pac-10 is known for having great offenses w/weak defense. Weak sauce buddy.

October 13, 2008  02:21 PM ET

The truth is, both of the Washington schools are so bad on defence (and offence too!) that it is impossible NOT to run up the score. Oh for the glory days of Apple Cups deciding the Pac 10 championship. Will we ever see those again?

October 13, 2008  02:26 PM ET

Does anyone hear LSU players complaining about Florida running up the score? Man up, Wazzu players. If you can't stop second-stringers, you don't belong in I-A. Plenty of good I-AA, Division II, and Division III schools out there. (I'll be damned if I use "FBS," "FCS," etc.)

October 13, 2008  03:29 PM ET

Got that right! Man up WSU and play better defense. Stop whinning like the babies that you guys truly are.

October 13, 2008  03:31 PM ET

This reminds me of UM's Randy Shannon crying about the big bad Gator bullies running up the score on his poor helpless UM team. Please people this is football your supposed to play for 60 minutes. If you ask me, the only one I saw act classless was Randy Shannon when he ran away from a handshake like a little girl. He wasn't man enough to say anything to Florida's coach. Then he runs to the media and cries that big bad UF picked on his young team. News flash Randy, you were the one who was classless and showed that you were not a man by not saying anything to Meyer, instead you choose to run like a girl and cry like one too. Good luck UM. You're well on your way to another Bowl to nowhere with that joke at your helm. Admit it to yourselves, you weren't complaining when you were running up the score on other teams, your only problem is that you sux and have for a while so now you know how it feels. sux to be U......M

October 13, 2008  03:36 PM ET

if they are whining this week just wait till they play USC. They are going to get smashed

October 13, 2008  04:47 PM ET

If you don't like having the score "run up" on you, field a better team. Having someone kick your A-$-$ is embarrassing. Whining about how unfair it is... that's just shameful. MAN UP!

October 13, 2008  07:30 PM ET

Please, I go to WSU and not one thing was said about running up the score. We know our team is in rebuilding mode with a new coach and system. Our school newspaper didn't have one word about running up the score...we don't expect any team to go easy with a lead, it's against the spirit of competition. Don't you find it ironic they didn't name one person or coach that was "crying" about the score?...please just bs.

October 13, 2008  09:50 PM ET

Personally, I would rather a team run up the score on me, then play dead on purpose because they KNOW they are better than you. You don't like how it feels, go out and play harder next week!. Good thing WSU is not playing these BIG 12 teams, what would Chase Daniel, Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy do to them?

October 13, 2008  11:56 PM ET

Earth to zY, is the school newspaper the only media available to you in Pullman? WSU Cornerback Romeo Pellum per Bud Withers, Seattle Times Oct 12th "Riley has no class". WSU Defensive tackle A'l Amu per Paul Buker, Portland Oregonian Oct 12th "remember that and when we come back to Corvallis, lay it on 'em". WSU sports radio talking head "Riley no class" 950 KJR. I guess Riley didn't get the memo. You better make sure Pete Carrol gets it this week. WSU special rules, opponent cannot use first string players after the mid point of the third quarter and no passing is allowed at all in the fourth. After the white flag goes up, their better not be any more scoring or we'll call you names afterward. Hey, when WSU was pounding Portland State earlier this year 48-9 was not WSU still throwing the ball late into the fourth quarter? I'd say you guys are lame, but then times are not much better North and West of the Cascades this year either.

October 14, 2008  02:10 AM ET

Yes there were numerous complaints from WSU fans and a few players. I totally agree with the Beav comments above and I said as much to my own kind on our board. I'll give them a timeout to cool down. Hopefully it won't happen again. I would only ask USC to not knock any more of our QB's out for the season.
