Cutcliffe or Gruden to Tennessee?

I hear the favorites for the Tennessee job, if there's a coaching vacancy, are former offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe, who is resurrecting Duke, and Jon Gruden.

Jon Gruden to leave an NFL team that's a playoff contending team every year to go rebuild an SEC school? I dont think so.

October 13, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Unless the money is MUCH more

October 13, 2008  11:58 AM ET

Chucky in Knoxville? Wow. That'd be a little impressive...

I think Gruden to UT is much more "Rumor" than "Truth"

Probably...

I remember hearing about a Vol fan's discontent with Fulmer in 2004, and that was before their horrible 2005 campaign. So Fulmer leaving is not unlikely... unless Nick Stephens can save his coaching career at Rocky Top.

Why would Gruden leave the NFL anyways?

October 13, 2008  01:23 PM ET

How would a second rate reporter from a second rate newspaper in Austin know anything about this?

October 13, 2008  02:33 PM ET

Gruden makes no sense. The money cannot be as good even at UT; but I guess when you look at all the success ex-pro head coaches have had coming to college it seems like a no-brainer ;)

I hear the favorites for the Tennessee job, if there's a coaching vacancy, are former offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe, who is resurrecting Duke, and Sarah Palin, who is afraid of witchcraft.

October 13, 2008  02:34 PM ET

PS. I cannot see Cutcliffe bailing from Duke after only one year and especially if Fulmer gets fired. I cannot see Cutcliffe wanting to come in after his mentor has been fired.

If Fulmer is gone, look for UT to seek out Will Muschamp. It would be a daring move, but a smart one.

LSUDynasty, you're alright with me. I certainly didn't expect to see you on here today. Where are the Michigan fans. I wanna hear "Hail to the victors..."

October 13, 2008  03:17 PM ET

Wow, Chucky to Tennesse, that would be kind of cool. Ha, not for LSU, but you know how many top recruits he would get? SCARY.

October 13, 2008  04:13 PM ET

Gruden can come to the SEC, he would not dominate the way some people thinks he would. The SEC is too tough these days.

October 13, 2008  04:17 PM ET

domepatrol you changed your picture right? a little down after what happened in the Swamp? how bout' you lsudynasty? I mean come on 51-21, I tried to find ya boy ricky jean-francois but apparently he couldn't get out for work release. bayou bengals more like bayou pu**ies. Jarrett Lee what a joke. but most of all CHARLES SCOTT 12 for 35 2.9yd avg. GARBAGE nothing but the finest...so much for the "best" running back in the SEC, Florida's a little bit tougher than App St., North Texas, and Auburn, huh? LSU is almost as sorry as FSU, almost.

October 13, 2008  04:21 PM ET

I think Gruden would be too intense for a college program.

October 13, 2008  04:31 PM ET

Looks like Tommy Bowden just got fired. I bet UT is on the phone with him right now.

October 13, 2008  04:39 PM ET

Gruden is HIGHLY overrated as a coach, and a human being, and unfortunately he won't be leaving Tampa anytime soon.

sethgator, I've been waiting for you to vomit some of your stupidity at my Noles. Your big mouth seems to have forgotten that your mighty gators got taken to the woodshed by Redneck Tech. Fourth and 1... hmmm... I wonder what play the genius Urban will call... hmmm... OH! I've got it! The same freakin' play he calls on EVERY fourth, or third, and 1.

There goes Timbo, Lord of the Swamp, and he gets.... STUFFED. It was amusing watching him cry after the game though.

October 13, 2008  05:15 PM ET

Of course, Gruden was a grad assistant at Tennessee and met his now wife (former UT cheerleader). So, he's got some ties. But, it does seem unlikely.

In the end, with Fulmer being in the SEC Champ game last year, having the same record against UGA and FLA as those teams do against him over the past six years, Bama being 2-4 against Phil over that same time period, the amount of Fulmer's buyout (which would go down after one more year), the debt UTAD has taken on for improvements to Neyland Stadium and also the just-begun $38M addition to an already impressive indoor football practice facility, among other reasons, it's hard to see Phil getting cut loose this year. I suppose if the Vols don't win another game, maybe. But, all in all, it's not likely.

October 13, 2008  05:40 PM ET

Gruden ain't going nowhere unless he's fired.

Cutcliffe would run to Tennessee.

Muschamp is not calm enough to be a head coach yet. That guy is borderline insane.
