Lovie: Squib kick was mistake

Coach Lovie Smith was willing to second-guess himself a day after the Bears' 22-20 loss in Atlanta. But he only went so far. Smith said Monday that if he had it to do over, he would not have had Robbie Gould execute a squib kickoff to the Falcons after the Bears' go-ahead touchdown pass from Kyle Orton to Rashied Davis with 11 seconds to play. Smith said after the game the reason for the squib instead of a conventional deep kick was what he perceived as the state of the injury-riddled coverage team.

It's ok Lovie. We forgive you! Now lets go out and win the rest of them! Go Bears!

October 14, 2008  07:07 AM ET

Well, you know what they say about hindsight......

October 14, 2008  07:50 AM ET

The Bears should be 6-0 at this point....

October 14, 2008  08:08 AM ET

Spam X1......6-0?????? LMAO. The Packers had a better chance at 6-0...and that ain't say'n a whole lot either! 6-0?? 6-0??......6666 and 0000???? My Jim Mora impersonation.

October 14, 2008  08:20 AM ET

they are who we thought they are..

October 14, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Duh. At least he admitted it. It's stupid when you are ahead and the other team has only 11 seconds left. You obviously gave them shorter field to work with.

October 14, 2008  09:02 AM ET

I think in hindsight it is easy to say it was a mistake, but still, the Falcons doing what they did in 11 seconds is more fluke than anything else.

October 14, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Yeah prob not the smartest play, still scratching my head at that. Take that disappointment and anger and apply it the the Viks this weekend! GO BEARS!!!

October 14, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Good job Lovie. How many games can you guys give away this season?

October 14, 2008  09:56 AM ET

That was THE most unbelievably idiotic play call I have ever seen! Your team's gotten you the lead .... with 11 seconds left ..... and you call for a short kick? Knowing that one good pass will put the other team in FG range? STU!!! PID!!! STU!!! PID!!! STU!!! PID!!!

Kick it as far away as you can and the game's over! This is the third game given away by the Bears for no good reason .... other than stupid play calls in the fourth quarter! Unbelievable!!

Can't take any more of this idiocy!

Why give them that chance, as remote as it may be? Why risk it?

The previous kick-off, Norwood returned it 80 some yards. The squib was a good call, Gould didn't kick it far enough. Babich and Marcus Hamiliton are to blame for the final defensive play, not the squib kick. Lovie needs to take over calling the defensive plays.

October 14, 2008  11:44 AM ET

He should have kicked it as far as possible and aimed for the sideline too. That would have given his coverage team the smallest possible field to have to cover (one quarter of the field). Too bad, they could have won this one.

October 14, 2008  11:53 AM ET

at least im not the only one who knows they would be 6-0 right now...do you even realize what that would mean right now? serious super bowl consideration. Because at this point was anybody believing the Titans? Certainly the Giants...But The Bears? i would still say if we get healthy, and start getting our act together in the secondary...id say its one sexy pick for the super bowl still at this point...

lets face it..its ALL because of our secondary...injured cornerbacks and Safetys that cant cover deep. Its a mixture for disaster...thats how you blow 4th quarter leads. Considering a trade is out of the question at this given point, all you can hope is to get healthy and find a diamond in the rough? Craig Steltz starting by game 10? not out of the question...

October 14, 2008  12:11 PM ET

Christ, here we go again with the Bear fans. Maybe you should be 6-0, but you aren't. Get over it! Funny that after the game Doug Buffone on WSCR (flagship station) said you were lucky to have three wins!

October 14, 2008  12:25 PM ET

The squib kick is stupid at any time.
Can't any kicker kick it out the back of the endzone anymore?

Did you watch the game? ..... short (stupid) squib kick, so ball at the 40..... 25 yard out pattern (with soft prevent defense giving way too much room), out of bounds at the 30 with one second left..... 48 yard field goal..... It wasn't a fluke and this isn't the first time that I've seen this scenario play out with less than a minute on the clock.... granted 11 seconds was ridiculous, but the Falcons took what the Bears gave them.....

For those asking "Why?", the answer is simple: A squib kick may allow the offense to set up with a shortened field, but it ain't getting returned for a TD, and Smith thought (understandably) that with 11 seconds left, a kickoff returned for TD was the only way they were going to lose. That said, with only a field goal necessary to win it, I think I agree that it was a bad gamble.

Petey024 has an interesting point: kick it long and out of bounds, giving the ball to the Falcons on the 30 and guaranteeing there will be no return. If Smith was that worried about the kickoff being returned, that was probably a better option than a squib.

As far as this "Bears should be 6-0" nonsense... Apparently you don't follow the NFL too much. This is, after all, the Any Given Sunday league, and the entire point of being a good team is to win the close ones. With parity being what it is, any team in the NFL can give any other team a run for their money. The difference is that the good teams actual GET the money (i.e., the W) instead of just making a good try at it.

Look at the '07 Bills. By my count, if Buffalo had won all of their down-the-wire games last year, they would have been at least 10-6 with an easy wildcard. But guess what, THEY DIDN'T.

Now look at the '08 Bills. By my count, if Buffalo this year had lost all of their down-the-wire games, they'd be 1-4 instead of 4-1. But guess what, THEY DIDN'T, because this year Buffalo has a quality quarterback, a healthier and upgraded defense, and a better gameplan than they did last year. This doesn't manifest itself in blowouts -- it manifests itself in being able to tough out the close games for the W.

The Bears are NOT grinding out those Ws. Saying that the Bears coulda-shoulda-woulda won if only blah-blah-blah... you might as well say that the Bears should be 6-0 because they could just as well have had a healthy Tom Brady at quarterback. But guess what, THEY AREN'T, because they aren't that good of a team. Welcome to reality.
