Five candidates for Clemson job

Here are five possible replacements for Tommy Bowden at Clemson: 1. Jim Grobe Wake Forest coach If you cannot beat them, have them join you. Few coaches in the country can claim they do more with less. 2. Bobby Johnson Vanderbilt coach He's a Clemson alum (1973) who has rebuilt the Commodores from the ashes. Would not be the splashy hire, but his academic track record fits president James Barker's mold. 3. Will Muschamp Texas defensive coordinator An intense, vocal figure -- in other words, the anti-Bowden -- who has generated top-notch, physical defenses at Auburn and now Texas. Figures to be the most sought-after assistant in the college ranks this offseason. 4. Gary Patterson Texas Christian coach Clemson AD Terry Don Phillips likes his southwestern guys, and Patterson has built a reputation as a consistent winner with a physical, hard-nosed style 5. Dabo Swinney Clemson interim coach Has more potential staying power than your average interim guy. Gained a ton of respect from administration as the football team liaison during last year's rift with an academic review board.

Insider confidential details tell me that this story is a go...confirmed. Most likely the front runner is....I cannot reveal, because it's a secret. You kinow these behind the doors pre-designed selection by the booster roosters who lay down the dough so the pizza tastes good, yes them.

There are $$$$$$ signs all around the Southeast now emitting from Clemson. Arkansas fans, you better start worrying....

lateral move, won't happen.

You missed it. Tommy Turbeville.
He still holds a grudge because of the hold Petrino incident a few years back. And this is his opportunity to get out before Saban's Bama teams start kickin the crap outta Auburn.

Tommy was done but clearly can coach somewhere. Clemson has allot of talent and need to make sure they get the right coach for this team. They need a Steve Spurrier hard nose coach.. Jim Grobe would be my choice.. Of course Steve could go in state and really charge up SC fans. He would get allot more talent.

Even though I don't want to admit it, Will Muschamp will be highly sought after one year at Texas. I hope Texas pays him at least $750K just to stay.

But assistant coaches leaving for Head coaching jobs is a sign of success. USC has lost several good coaches because of their success.

There is one man that would love to go to Clemson. He has TONS of friends and business associates in that area..... none other than ...... Rich Rodriguez. DO NOT be surprised if it happens

I really don't think that would happen.

Not gonna happen

There are a lot of Coaches who could suceed at Clemson. Tommy did do a good job of keeping the integrity of the program as far as high quality kids and not thugs. They were citizens first and then students followed by being an athlete. He did a great job at that. I want to see wins so I say, bring back Danny Ford! The all time Tiger. Although, the Defensive cordinator from Texas is on hell of a choich. I think Dabo could lead the Tigers as long as he keeps recruiting!

The timing of this suggests they want someone sooner than when Muschamp may be available. With all due respect to Danny Ford his time has passed, that was never more apparent than when he was at Arkansas. My thoughts are they may go after Kiffin.

You have a gold mine in your backyard with Dabo. When he was a walk-on at Alabama he played and made big plays on all special teams, caught passes across the middle, got pounded and then drove to Birmingham after games to clean gutters with his brother. Just to make enough money to stay in school. Best use of a scholarship ever granted. This guy is smart, committed and a total winner. Watch how the Clemson team responds to his leadership and you'll see a rising star. If it doesn't work out, we would love to have him back in Tuscaloosa.

October 14, 2008  12:40 PM ET

Clemson's a fixin' to hire 'em a coach daggummit!!!!

October 14, 2008  12:44 PM ET

I heard Patterson is in talks to take the Kansas State job...don't tell Ron Prince.

October 14, 2008  12:51 PM ET

I think ol Tommy Tubberville would be an excellent choice for both the school and for Tubberville. Clemson would get a good coach that could turn them around in the ACC and Tubbs could get out of the SEC where he is getting slaughtered.

October 14, 2008  12:54 PM ET

Bud Foster from VT would be my second choice after Muschamp.

October 14, 2008  01:02 PM ET

i have strong inside info, that RR, will leave UM and take the job. He is discontent with how he is being treated by the alumni, and newspapers, and he has not signed a contract yet. I think it is mutual between he and UM...RR does not fit their bill of fare. They are not what RR had invisioned. My inside man states there maybe some complications as a result the money UM paid WVU, but it will be worked out, and RR is probably now the new head coach at Clemson.

October 14, 2008  01:10 PM ET

Jim Grobe will not be going anywhere. He apparantly has a clause in his contract that will not let him go to another ACC school.
