Mariners struggle to find GM

It wasn't a good weekend for the Mariners and their search for a general manager. Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Jed Hoyer has decided not to interview with the Mariners. Earlier, the Chicago White Sox declined to give the Mariners permission to talk to their assistant GM, Rick Hahn. And on Friday, Oakland A's assistant GM David Forst withdrew his name from consideration. The Mariners interviewed five external candidates last week -- Jerry Dipoto (Arizona Diamondbacks director of player personnel), Peter Woodfork (Arizona assistant GM), Tony Bernazard (New York Mets vice president of player development), Kim Ng (Los Angeles Dodgers assistant GM) and Tony LaCava (Toronto Blue Jays assistant GM).

yeah because no one wants a losing team..

October 14, 2008  11:54 AM ET

and with a struggling market, nobody wants to take over a team riddled in some big contracts they could do without, they werent winning with them anyways....some busted badly, and its too much money wasted for anybody to wanna take over and THINK they make that any better.

How many million? I'll take it.

October 14, 2008  12:39 PM ET

OK, how many threads are there going to be for this? The Mariners freakin' suck.

October 14, 2008  01:46 PM ET

The problem isn't the players or the fans. It's Howard Lincoln, Chuck Armstrong and the ownership group headed by Hiroshi Yamauchi. Those three men specifically want "bobble-heads" in the front office - people who will rubber-stamp all the decisions they make regarding personnel. They don't want anyone in the front office that will question their decisions or challenge their authority. Anyone that takes the Mariners' GM position needs to recognize that and be willing to play chameleon, changing colors to suit the ownership's latest whims. All Lincoln, et al care about is having a profitable team. They don't want to win the World Series, simply playing well enough to put fans in the seats is all they strive for. Unfortunately, they didn't manage that this past year. And ultimately, it's the loyal Mariners' fans who suffer.

October 14, 2008  02:04 PM ET

Nobody who's anybody in baseball wants to play or work for Howard Lincoln, period. He is the sole reason the Mariners are in the position they're in.

October 14, 2008  03:55 PM ET

nobody wants to be a part of this disaster. It is going to take a couple years to fix this roster, and honestly, whoever takes this job next will probably get fired before their moves and this team make a difference

great city, great baseball fans, fairly new ball park. mismanagement of player personnel has left farm system a mess coupled with bad free agent signings and trades. you know you're in trouble when the only superstar on the team is your leadoff guy that doesn't speak english. they need to commit to building their farm system as most successful teams have been doing.

I prefer to call them the west coast Orioles

It blows my mind that Paul DePodesta isn't being considered. He deserves a second chance and got the Dodgers to the playoffs. If you ask me, the Mariners need a huge shakeup and I deeply believe that DePodesta is the man for the job. As an A's fan, I would absolutely hate that.

October 14, 2008  06:50 PM ET

Just hire the next person who walks in the door! Does it really matter with a 100-loss team and everyone in the clubhouse looking to beat the living crap out of Ichiro?

October 14, 2008  09:40 PM ET

Somebody needs to write the book: how did the Mariners crash so far and so fast. It wasn't that long ago that they had a team strong enough to lose superstars and still get to the postseason. Now they're the most expensive joke in the major leagues, and we who watched them rise get to watch them flounder.

The Mariners could stand to learn a great deal from Tampa -- building a high quality farm system with solid players for every single position. I'm a loyal Mariners fan, but seeing them blow so much dough for over 100 losses in 2008 was even too painful for children to watch at times. Doh!

October 15, 2008  03:55 AM ET

nobody wants a team that has a losing record and high payroll....

October 15, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Actually, here in Seattle we refer to them as the Montreal Expos West, with a high payroll to boot.

October 15, 2008  12:39 PM ET

What about Wayne Krivsky? He seemed to have a clue over in Cincinnati.

October 15, 2008  12:46 PM ET

The owners want a GM who says: Yes, I can make this team win now (kinda like what Ed Wade told Drayton Mclane). But I think all the canidates would say 'I want to win 5 years from now after rebuilding'. Then Lincoln stands and shakes their hand and hollars out the door "NEXT!".
