Belichick stands by Cassel

Let there be no doubt. With Matt Cassel doing the Dow Jones - he's up, he's down - and with anxiety-filled Patriots followers riding the volatile highs and lows, Bill Belichick stepped forward yesterday with a rather strong statement. For those media types and fans clamoring for a quarterback switch, it's not happening. "Matt is our starting quarterback," Belichick said. "He gives our team the best chance to win."

Way to go out on a limb there Bill. It's not like you have any other options anyway. We are stuck with this guy for the rest of the year. Then again, it could be worse....We could be Lions or Raiders fans!

October 15, 2008  05:59 AM ET

And wha other REAL choice does he have????

Mail in the rest of your season, Patriots!! It's OVER...............

October 15, 2008  05:59 AM ET

yeah like he has alot of options. he can call Testaverde or maybe Jeff Geroge LOL. way to state the obvious. once again Belicheck talks with out saying much. this will be a rough year for Pats fans.

October 15, 2008  06:48 AM ET

Sounds like he's been watching some of Lovie Smith's speeches from last year..

October 15, 2008  07:23 AM ET

Aside from the guy who ran out of the end zone for Detroit, Matt Cassel played about the dumbest QB of the season this week. He was just atrociously bad. Missing a wide open Randy Moss, bouncing the ball in front of a wide open Sammy Morris (It was a TWO YARD PASS? How are you short on that?), pulling the ball down and running for it on fourth and goal, with no less than 5 guys in the way.....

October 15, 2008  07:33 AM ET

I guess, we just have to throw in the towel and wait for the return of Brady....

October 15, 2008  08:29 AM ET

It is like salvaje50 said. So the choices are?

October 15, 2008  08:48 AM ET

He does not have a choice. Why even question it? Pats are really in trouble and the fans are panicking.

October 15, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Please come back Tom.. even with a cast on..
it has to be better than it is right now.

October 15, 2008  09:04 AM ET

Well, the picture say it all with Matt Cassel, were stuck right in the middle with you it till the end of the season. But the defense stinks too, I mean really stinks. How many time is O???Neal is going to get burned in the secondary? It a whole lot of blame to go around here, the whole team needs to pick up there game and play with some pride or you can pack up the season and say good bye it's only going to get tougher the rest of the way.

October 15, 2008  09:11 AM ET

But the Chargers played a great game and the Pats didn't, it's that simply. The Pats have to look to make some defense changes next season I mean all the biltz were doing and no sacks to show for it, the defense is not getting to the QB to give him presser so it will be easy for other QB to throw on our defense all day with out a little presser to the QB.

October 15, 2008  09:20 AM ET

The Pats are going to have a terrible year New England just accept it, at least after this year cassel should be good enough to replace tom brady when they run up the score by 40 points in 2009.

Hey KP

As much as I would like Tom to come back the Pats can't rush him back to fast got to let his injury heal up to 100%. And or O-line is going have to stronger next season to protect Tom when he gets back. Be truthful I wish Tom could play to but I'm just kidding my self, I just take this season in one game at a time and what ever happens, happens.

I thought, actually, I was beaten over the head last year with the analysts saying what an offensive genuis Billy Boy was and how he was so gifted when it comes to his QB's. I think the genuis here is Tom. I never really jumped on the Brady bandwagon, but seeing them over the last couple of weeks without him, gosh, they are a totally different team.

I hate Bill. He is such an arrogant SOB and I am super sorry Pats fans, but I am glad that he is getting it handed to him. Brady on the other hand is a likeable, respectable and gifted guy. I will always pull for Brady and hope that he gets back to 100%. He is good for the game, but it's a shame that he's on the same team with Bill.

Sorry, I had to get my mind off of my Cowboy drama for a minute

October 15, 2008  09:41 AM ET

I've been a Pats fan for forty years, seen my share of ups and downs with this team and expect to see many more. Not panicking yet, just very sad that this 'valley low enough' came so quickly after the 'mountain high enough'.

October 15, 2008  09:47 AM ET

chris simms.... could of had him... when the media found out about the tryout big bill cancelled it.... good call.... simms isnt brady.... but hes a better option then cassel.... simms had good repoor with galloway im sure he could have found moss in the endzone.....

October 15, 2008  09:57 AM ET

I guess that answers the question of "How would a high school quarterback do in the NFL?"

October 15, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Stick with Cassel for this year, it will make him a better back-up for next season.

October 15, 2008  10:06 AM ET

I'm amazed. Usually rats leave a sinking ship. Bellicheat must have some devious plan for the rest of the season. Maybe he'll activate Brady's clone from storage or he'll slip Cassel some steroids in his Kool-Aid.

October 15, 2008  10:15 AM ET

Bilichick either thought Brady was indestructable, or Cassel was a quality back-up. He was wrong either way.
