Rondo wants long-term Celtics deal

Rajon Rondo is hopeful he can be a Celtic long after the Big Three are gone. General manager Danny Ainge said yesterday that the $2.09 million team option on Rondo for the 2009-10 season will be exercised before this season. Rondo and his agent, Bill Duffy, said they are happy about the decision and they are hoping to ink a long-term deal next summer. Rondo will be eligible for a lucrative long-term deal next summer that would begin with the 2010-11 season. Signing him next summer as opposed to when he is a restricted free agent during the hot 2010 market will have salary cap implications for Boston. Duffy plans to push hard for a long-term deal; Ainge does not comment on free agent issues.

I was very pleased with Rondo's development over last season. He really stepped it up in the playoffs. But if you want the big contract then you will have to show more this year that you can shoot from the perimeter on a consistent basis

Rondo needs to put up good numbers this season to get the deal. Specially now that the big three might have one year left on their tank.

Why would he want to be a Celtic after the big three leave. does he not remember what the team was like trying to build through the draft?

Me thinks Rondo has been smoking the Kentucky blue grass. Ralph Sampson could have played the point for the Celtics last season. Rondo Schmondo!

I was watching the Celts vs. Cavs pre-season game last night, and they have some young talent if they develop right. Bill Walker, Patrick O'Bryant(I think GS wasn't good for him), J.R. Giddens, Powe, Glenn Davis, etc. If just 3 of these guys turn out to be decent players, the Celtics could stay around for awhile.

he has improved last year, but he still hasn't proved to us that he can shoot. They shouldn't give him significant money. Celtics need at least 2 stars on that team to be successful. Rondo is nothing alone.

POWE HAS A TINY BIT OF PROMISE... I STILL DONT SEE HOW DAVIS SCORED 20 AGAINST THE PISTONS LAST SEASON... SHOCKING

October 15, 2008  08:29 AM ET

This is what's wrong w/ the players right now. They are asking for the future now. Just play the regular season like it's your last and the contract will be sweeter in the end. Just keep proving that you belong and deserving of a big and long contract. Look at Ben Gordon as an example. Don't let the contract be a distraction to your game this year.

So do I...

October 15, 2008  09:28 AM ET

While Rondo improved a lot last year, having KP, PP and Ray made it easy to look a lot better than he actually is. There were some scary rookie moments during the playoffs that still had me shaking my head.

He should concentrate on getting better and a lot more stable in his level of play before he starts asking for a big payday. He needs to play better if he wants the big bucks

October 15, 2008  09:28 AM ET

KP = KG

October 15, 2008  09:33 AM ET

Rondo has improved but it's too risky to sign him to a long term deal, especially if he doesn't improve on last season's numbers.

He's good, but can he carry the Celts when KG, Paul, and Ray can not?

Hey Epoch1,

When did KP join the team I need to confirm with her. I need to tell her to dunk the ball on who ever gets in the way this season.

If Rondo can hit that out side shoot with on a regularly basics he will wroth the money, let's wait this season and see what you got. From what I see in preseason it look like he finishing better when he attacks the hoop now he needs that out side shoot he will be dangerous.

October 15, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Come out and have a big year, Rajon, and you will get the contract.

"Rondo wants a long-term Celtic deal" - Doesn't everybody. *sigh*

October 15, 2008  10:02 AM ET

i think the celtics need to hold on to this guy because of the intangibles. he adds energy to the guards. i agree that he needs to play well for the big contract but i hope the celtics look at more than just the stat book.

October 15, 2008  11:03 AM ET

Don't do it, Boston.

Come on......lol
- first of all its pre-season-
secondly- do you really think ANY of those that you mentioned
will ever turn into a real superstar? the answer is NO
they are simply role players - who you need to be a winner-
that compliment the stars.
