Cowboys, Williams agree to extension

Jerry Jones' pursuit of Roy Williams was almost as ardent as that of Adam Jones'. The Cowboys owner said he attempted to trade for Williams over the last two years but could not get the Lions to agree. The teams did not start talks in earnest about this deal until a few hours before the 3 p.m. deadline. With at least nine selections in next year's draft, the Cowboys felt comfortable in giving up their first-, third- and sixth-round picks in return for Williams and Detroit's seventh-rounder. The Cowboys and Williams have agreed to the parameters of a contract extension that will keep him in a Dallas uniform until 2013.

Get rid of Millen and wow things happen. Of course his extension was part of him being delt.

The rich just got richer. Give Jerry Jones credit, he puts players on the field. Not good news for my Giants though. They couldn't cover TO too many times before. Just got a lot harder. Draft pics are over rated. A good deal for Dallas. No way were they going to get receiver like him in the draft and with their record the Lions are getting second and fourth round value with those late round pics.

Good job Jerry. Now we got some "young" talent to work with for a couple of year. Williams, Witten, Barber, Jones, Romo, Austin, not bad at all.

October 15, 2008  07:10 AM ET

Williams will thrive in Dallas. Good for him to escape the train wreck that is the Lions.

October 15, 2008  07:12 AM ET

I was a little apprehensive about giving up the first for him, but after thinking we'd never get a WR of this caliber out of the draft I was more comfortable with it. I would have preferred trading Crayton and the two lower picks for him instead though! LOL

October 15, 2008  07:13 AM ET

Hopefully he won't turn out to be as "productive" as Joey Galloway was for us!

October 15, 2008  07:15 AM ET

Basically the only pick given up was our first rounder. Which is darn near a 2nd round pick anyway (Hopefully).....Jerry Jones traded a 3rd round and a 6th round. Well, he also collected a 3rd round pick from the Browns in the Draft, so trading Dallas' third round pick wasn't bad at all. Then the 6th rounder was replaced by a 5th rounder from the Titans.

So as I see it, we got WR Roy Williams for a 1st round pick. Besides, you never EVER know what you are going to get in a WR in the Draft. Right now, we have our Future No.1 WR and a Great No. 2, and the best part is, we don't have to wait for him to be productive.

What number do you think he'll wear??

Didn't Galloway get hurt in the first series that year against the Eagles? That was karma. If he could've stayed healthy the results would've been different.

the big difference now is that the core of the cowboys team is full of young talented players - as opposed to a bunch of aging vets (aikman, emmitt, irvin et al.)

Williams clearly takes over the #2 and can take TO's slot when he retires. Hopefully crayton can develop more and be the #2 later on. Perhaps a few more years can help him.

I like the move. 3 draft picks are a lot but draft picks are overrated and they still have a ton remianing.

Draft picks are overrated? Tell that to Jimmy Johnson and the 90s Cowboys and their 3 Super Bowl titles.

bigdog1002...It depends on who is doing the picking, and it ain't Jimmy Johnson or tex Schram. It could be a lot of input from Jerry Jones with Wade gone and newbie Garrett.

And to the Patriots of this decade.
Draft picks are overrated for teams that don't scout well. All things considered though, this was a good deal for Williams and the Lions. Dallas, well, time will tell. Looks very good on the surface. Of course, if something happens to him, everyone will say: "See, we shouldn't have given up the three draft picks!!! Blah Blah"

Honestly, the Cowboys needed some type of good news for the organization. It's all bad the past 2-3 weeks. T.O, Romo hurt, Jones hurt, McBriar hurt, Pacman suspended. Something good needed to happen, and I think this will help.

October 15, 2008  10:33 AM ET

I guess I don't see the good in this. How is TO going to stay happy now that someone has come in to steal his thunder. He was unhappy with an over the hill Terry Glenn and why do we think he will be happy with an in his prime, Williams?

October 15, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Draft were not over-rated, but they are now.
When you look at the gauranteed money it takes to sign a first round pick, why not just spend that money on veteran free agents, at least you will know what you are getting.

We went into the deal with 10 draft picks and came out with 9 minus our first rounder. Perennial first round talent for basically a first round pick? Plus conditional picks for Julius Jones and Jacques Reeves?

1st round picks are overrated. One of these days I'm going to research the last 20 years of NFL first round draft picks and see who made a significant impact on their team and determine the "bust factor" - that is, what percentage of 1st rounders are busts.

Why is everyone talking about "stealing thunder"? TO will be more than happy because now he won't have a safety shading over the top of him every time he runs a route. He will get one-on-one coverage, because nobody in their right mind is going to leave Roy Williams one-on-one for his bread and butter fade route. If you double them both, you let Jason Witten work one-on-one against a linebaccker?? LOL.
