A league source said the Eagles' interest in tight end Tony Gonzalez soured when they found out the Kansas City Chiefs wanted more than a third-round draft pick, as reported by NFL.com. Gonzalez remained with Kansas City.

Every year the Eagles fail to make an impact trade. It's like they only get involved to drive up the price. Disappointing to say the least, especially when Dallas doesn't hesitate to pull the trigger on making moves (not that it's helped them win a playoff game).

They tagged their TE Smith this year. Enough said. Too much money in one spot.

October 15, 2008  07:04 AM ET

LJ Smith is gone after this season.

October 15, 2008  07:05 AM ET

The Chiefs wanted too much. I feel bad for TG. If they could have gotten a 3rd RD pick, they should have accepted it.

October 15, 2008  07:12 AM ET

too bad the chiefs didnt want LJ + a 3rd round pick

October 15, 2008  08:27 AM ET

I would've traded LJ and a 1st round pick just to get rid of LJ. But seriously, LJ and a 3rd would've made great sense. Throw in Tony Hunt....oops too late he's cut.

Grow a set of balls and make a move for once in your life Andy.

OK, so you let Smith go at the end of the year and you have no TE...draft pic I guess....One top receiver , no TE and Westbrook game to game again with McNabb a year older......Hmmmm?

October 15, 2008  09:12 AM ET

I dont whats going on with philly. Why are they so afraid to make a trade that's going to benefit the team. Every year its the same BS. Cowboys get better and now Eagles do nada.

October 15, 2008  10:09 AM ET

I am just glad NYG stayed away. If we have learned one thing, the draft can make a huge impact, and I am not talking about 1st and 2nd round picks.

October 15, 2008  10:09 AM ET

I hate to say it, but the Eagles are a cheap team when it comes to signing big names. I'm surprised they nabbed Samuel this off-season.

October 15, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Banner and Reid need to go. Year after year no moves. We are talking about big moves, but they don't even try the simple moves. T.O. was the last big move and we all saw what happened and I guess they do not want to chance that again. LJ Smith and a third rounder for Gonzalez would have been nice to see, but don't expect anything from the Eagles.

October 15, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Hey, KC! The Bears will send Grossman your way for Gonzalez!

October 15, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Carl assumed he knew the value of TG. Once again Carl was wrong.

Taking chances is what wins you Super Bowls - Belicheat took a chance on an unproven 7th rounder when Bledsoe went down and look where the Cheatriots ended up.

Eagles passed, Giants passed, Chiefs should have gotten what they could out of a trade and ran. Bring back Vermiel !!

October 15, 2008  11:59 AM ET

Trading Gonz wouldn't have benefited any team. There isn't a team that's a Tight End away from the playoffs. The Eagles just need McNabb + Westbrook healthy to make the Playoffs. Same thing with NY, as long as Eli is comfy and the defense is sound that team is in.

After Larry Johnson got busted again, the Chiefs probably need a good guy around for leadership and image. 2 game suspension by the league?

October 15, 2008  12:31 PM ET

I'm an Eagles fan but what trade value would a free agent at the end of the year LJ Smith have to a 1-4 Chiefs team?

October 15, 2008  01:26 PM ET

Eagles window of opportunity is closing Andy Reid and the GM think they can win a championship on the cheap with only Westbrook and McNaab. It's a shame they don't spend the money and get another weapon. They think their SYSTEM will win....EGO is a terrible thing..! Sometimes you have to realize it's not the X's and the O's it the Jimmys and the Joes you have playing..!

October 15, 2008  03:35 PM ET

If this is the case, don't say Eagles are a "cheap" team. A 3rd rounder was the right price for Gonzales. He is an impact player, sure, but it is mid-season already and he's only got a couple years left.

I was really hoping to get him for the Bills, as we need an impact TE badly. But if the Chiefs wanted more than a 3rd round pick, forget it. They wanted too much.

October 15, 2008  03:49 PM ET

Eagles 3rd round picks since 2003 -
Billy McMullen, Matt Ware, Ryan Moats, Tony Hunt no longer on team.
Bradley and Gocong starting on D.
Bryan Smith, this year, listed third on depth chart at DE.

I like the young linebackers, but I'd trade either one of them heads-up for Gonzalez. And when you look at the rest of the guys we've picked up with 3rd round picks, it's a no-brainer. Give them a 3rd and 5th, or something!

Hell, we took Reggie Brown, Winston Justice, Abiamiri, and McCoy with SECOND ROUND picks!! I know, I know, DeSean, but he's the only one.....We sghould have gotten it done.

Didn't Lurie say we were going for it?
