Torre's job safe despite Game 4 loss

Joe Torre woke up Tuesday morning confronted by a familiar situation. His Dodgers, like his Yankees last season, must win three straight postseason games to avoid elimination. But unlike last October, Torre will not lose his job if they do not. Torre can take comfort in that reality even as assorted journalists and Dodgers fans were second-guessing him for the way he handled his pitching staff during the Philadelphia Phillies' 7-5 victory Monday night in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series. After removing starter Derek Lowe after just five innings, Torre used all three of his left-handed relievers by the time there was one out in the top of the eighth. Relying on two right-handers -- Cory Wade and closer Jonathan Broxton -- to preserve a two-run lead, Torre watched as each gave up a two-run homer to a left-handed batter. First, Shane Victorino connected, then Matt Stairs, and, suddenly, the Phillies were ahead, three games to one. "Yeah, you wish the result was different, and if we all know results, we certainly say, yeah, maybe I should have done that and done this," said Torre.

Yes because unlike Stinkbrenner, McCourt nows how baseball is played. Torre have called some great shots but sometimes things just fall into places. Go dodgers, win 3 straight!

October 15, 2008  07:14 AM ET

It's ridiculous to think that Torre would be fired after one successful season.

October 15, 2008  07:25 AM ET

I love Torre but game 4 was a mess. You can't take out Lowe after 5 when he threw 75 pitches and had a great 5th inning. Joe's bullpen use was always questionable except for when the Yankees had such a good one (Late 90's) it didn't matter who they brought in.
His pitcher and cathcer were both baffled and threw him under the bus in the papers.

Successful season? Oh right, because Joe led the team with the most talent to a mediocre record, and won the worst division in sports. Please, Joe did nothing his last four years in the Bronx, proven by the statement in one of these stories that he called more meetings in one year in LA than he did in his last FIVE in the Bronx. Joe became complacent in New York, and his act grew tired. When he continues to mismanage the Dodgers and cost them more games (perhaps if Joe wasn't so bullheaded, and he'd started Ethier and Kemp EARLIER this season, the Dodgers would have been even better... and not needed superman AKA Manny to save them). Joe is vastly overrated. He did a great job for the Yanks from 1996 to 2002 but from then on, became a bobble head on the bench. And it goes both ways, without George giving him a shot, Joe would be a retired sport announcer somewhere - so save the Stinkbrenner comments (ooh, very creative...).

This writer thinks Steinbrenner owns the Dodgers, too ...

I find it hillarious that this story comes from the NY Times. You guys could **** up a cup of coffee

I'm not tim kirtjen, but yo nailed this on Justin. LA - welcome to the school of Joe torre management. torre's decisiion to pull pitchers that are actually pitching well always baffled me. seems that he brought his "how to manage a pitching staff book" from the bronx to LA. he pulls guys way too fast.

The playoffs are going a long way to proving how bad St. Joe is at managing in crucial sitautions. People don't seem to want to remember that Yankees' fans were booing St. Joe some time before he was rejecting that insulting "still would have been the highest paid mgr in MLB" contract not so long ago. Why did they boo? Because of many poorly made decisions. Admittedly part of the problem was that St. Joe did not have the working class hero type players any more that he had previously when the Yankees were winning the WS. The type of players who ran into walls, played wounded, knew how to move the runner along, go the other way to get the run in, etc.... in short went to war to win the damn game. But such a situation is when a so-called great mgr like St. Joe is supposed to shine on brightly. People booed St. Joe because he mucked up the bullpen. All the way back to 2003 when he would take out a starter to bring in the likes of Proctor, (who actually was a damn good pitcher until Torre wore his arm out). Torre suddenly forgot how to play little ball, also. He never played hit and run any more once the likes of Giambi, Sheffield ,et al, were on the team. What they can't go the other way? Well if they can't then how about they do what the mgr tells them to do or they sit down, no? But, Torre was the most waffling namby pamby mgr to ever put on the pintstripes. And for all you bleeding hearts who think he was so damn villifed, that the Yankees treated him so poorly, think about this, they "fired" him and he walked right over to the Doggers in arguably the weakest division in baseball and was able to eke out a divison title. The lucky cat Torre landed on his feet again. But now the grumblings are being felt in Dogger town as they begin to complain about Torre and his mismangement of the Dogger staff. (smile) Enjoy, Dogger fans, for he is now your St. Joe and you are welcome to him.

dodger fans are not stuck up like yankee fans...so we don't blame torre for our losses...if im not mistaken...torre pulled out lowe with a tie game...and thier big lefties coming up to hit. you can argue both sides of this...one of them being lowe only pitched 75 pitches and had a good 5th...but also we have a pretty deep bullpen (usually) and we wanted the lefty on lefty matchup in a crucial part of the game. so all you salty new york yankee fans shut up please...maybe you should worry about your team not making the playoffs before you criticize joe( who happens to be in them once again)

October 15, 2008  10:45 AM ET

The media is right, he should have done that and this...

Guy gets alot of loyalty, he is an excellent manager of men, he is not always the greatest in game strategist.

If Joe is so bad, why are the Dodgers still playing baseball while the Yankees have been playing golf for the past month?

I am sure it is all torre who never threw a pitch or took an at bat...Riiiiiight. Torre is a good manager, not the best in game strategist.

Wow...........170 games and maybe not the best decisions were made in every one of them. I guess the Yankee brain trust did everything right this season (because we know this is where the hating is coming from). Each of every one of Joe Girardi's game time decisions were just spot on. He must have just felt that his veterans were wearing down from 13 staright seasons of extra games and managed to help them save energy for next year by avoiding the post season this year.

Not that this has anything to do with Torre or this arcticle but the Yankees could have had a little more production out of any number of areas and made the playoffs...And Yes Girardi could have had a couple of places where he made questionable calls.
That does not mean that Torre would have gotten them there either.

October 15, 2008  06:42 PM ET

I was at the game. He should have never taken Lowe out. Everyone in the section I was in was saying this, so it is not hindsight. Lowe was scheduled to bat 3rd the following inning, that is when the chage should have been made. Wade has been great of late and Broxton has been doing the job, but should have had a lefty available at the end to take care of the Phillies left handed bats.
Plus, stop using Kent, his at bats look awful.

I have been to NY. Three days in that stink pot of a city was enough for a lifetime. All New Yorkers think the world revolves around them, if you don't belive it , just ask one. Worst mannered, rudest and by far the "my shyte don't stink" acting people in the world.
