Possible Twins-Giants trade

It wouldn't be surprising if the Twins have trade talks about moving outfielder Delmon Young to the San Francisco Giants, from whom they acquired pitchers Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano. The Giants' leading home run hitter this season was catcher Bengie Molina with 16.

I can understand why there are no comments. This all depends on who the Giants give up.

October 15, 2008  08:11 AM ET

Exactly. If they give up more than a bag of ball and a fungo bat, Sabean should be beaten.

October 15, 2008  08:12 AM ET

Why would the Twins trade Delmon Young?

October 15, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Isn't he the sh$#t bird who threw a bat at an ump in the Minors?

October 15, 2008  08:23 AM ET

odd...why even bring up this story. I can see why we (twins fan here) would want to move young. He was brought in to hit homers, not hit balls oppo. The rest of the twins lineup is good at that. Plus, the guy cannot play the outfield. You have to see him field a ball to understand. Look what we gave up for him...Garza and Bartlett...not the best either, and Garza was a pain, but we'd better get something for Young.

October 15, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Ask Tampa how they feel about Garza and Bartlett...

It's interesting that they bring up Molina on the San Fran side. We have no need for a catcher. Unless he's willing and able to switch to 3rd and hit about 15 more HRs a season, I don't want him.

Oh boy, the last time the Giants traded with the Twins it really didn't work out too well. Hopefully they really think this through.....

October 15, 2008  08:50 AM ET

I for one applaud the Twins' committment to maintaining medeocrity

October 15, 2008  08:56 AM ET

The last thing the Giants need is another young outfielder. Holliday is the only OF they should trade for. Otherwise, a corner infielder.

October 15, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Stupid idea. Delmon Young is too young and has too much upside to give up on now. Typical speculation by the St Paul Pioneer Press, "still only 25 cents" - possibly the WORST newspaper in the country.

If the Twins were smart, they would unload Michael Cuddyer and his long, slow swing - and tender fingers.

Maintaining mediocrity? Division titles in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006; and damn near in a rebuilding 2008.

Question - name the ONLY team in MLB history to win a division title in every decade since divisional play began?

The Twins - 1969, 1970, 1987, 1991 and the above mentioned 2000s. The Baltimore Orioles must win in 2009 to be able to match the Twins in this feat.

October 15, 2008  09:20 AM ET

they can talk about a trade all they want but there is NO reason that the Twins should trade any part of their team unless its Boof.. i don't understand why teams do that.

October 15, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Did Delmon Young hit 30-40 homers last year? I must be missing something...Maybe he can tie for team lead if they get him

That's a pretty interesting stat that the Twins are the only team to accomplish that...... and I don't think the O's are a threat to match them.

Folks--this is just a rumor...Especially if you're reading Charley Walters. The same Charley Walters who said Tony Dungy would leave the Colts for the Gophers, Flip Saunders would leave the Pistons for the Gophers and that Scott Skiles was going to be Indiana's next coach. He just throws crap out there and sees what sticks...

October 15, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Why wo9uld they even post this without talking about who the Giants are offering? Stupid. They should be talking about trading Cuddy anyway.

October 15, 2008  09:49 AM ET

they brought up bengie molina but theres NO WAY you would trade such a young stud in delmon young for someone old....AND a catcher if you already HAVE ONE!!!!

there is nobody on that team i would want at ALL unless it were maybe aaron rowand, bring him back to the AL maybe that would shake things up but its just too little to give up..id get some more pitching prospects if that...2 prospects and Rowand? sounds good to me.that is IF UR REALLY gonna give up Young.

October 15, 2008  10:18 AM ET

jonesy9872 said it best, that this is charley walters of the pioneer press, that he, "just throws cra out thre and sees what sticks".

everyone and their dead grandmother knows the twins have four, quality outfielders signed for next year in cuddyer, young, span and gomez. kubel is solid at dh. so, they have an expendable outfielder, or so conventional wisdom says. of course they'll look into deals for one of the four outfielders. and of course the giants want to get younger and more powerful (not that young is a power hitter, of course).

cnnsi.com should ban "truth and rumors" from quoting charley walters.

October 15, 2008  10:32 AM ET

This is a complete non-story. As a couple people have mentioned, don't pay any attention to Charley Waters. Anyone from the Mpls-St Paul area, that is unfortunate to read him on a regular basis, knows he has no access to any type of reliable inside info. He just gives his opinions.

I've got two numbers for those that are critical of Delmon. 23. That's how old he is. He is an elite level prospect and by the time he's 26 or 27 he is going to be an absolute stud. This was only his 2nd season in the majors and despite his young age (pun intended) he hit .290 with 10 HRs and 69 RBI. Sure, the power numbers weren't great but contrary to what some of you seem to think the Twins did not bring him expecting him to put up 30 home runs. He was always projected to develop some power after a few years in the league, a la Joe Mauer, which could still very well end up happening. All of the Twins problems could be solved if Cuddyer could learn to play third or even 2nd (which would mean Casilla would have to move back to his natural position at SS.)
