GoalSeattle, the Seattle-based soccer blog, has revealed a rumor that Seattle Sounders FC has targeted Swedish midfielder Freddie Ljungberg as a potential Designated Player. A West Coast source has confirmed that Seattle has, in fact, been in contact with Ljungberg and are trying to lure the former Arsenal star to the Pacific Northwest.

Wasn't Keller already going to be their DP? Are they adding a second?

October 15, 2008  09:15 AM ET

That's a good question...however, Seattle could pick up a DP slot in trade or something.
I don't know the rules though, plus the DP rules seem to change whenever needed.

Keller was coming on at around 200-300k... he is not going to be their DP....

October 15, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Guess they've backed off of Henry....

October 15, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Yeah but isn't Ljunberg after a ridiculous sum of money?

October 15, 2008  09:45 AM ET

I like him very much as a player, but is he going to make any sort of splash? That's what a DP has to do. It's about more than just the play.

madridist- well with NY hounding away at getting Henry i doubt Seattle had much of a chance...

Hova- yea, he was requesting something like 1.4M just for half a season of play

kopper- well with Seattle already boasting 16k+ season ticket holders i doubt they are truely concerned with attracting more fans.... they are already above the par for MLS sides... now they have to field a competitive side to keep them season ticket holders

October 15, 2008  11:04 AM ET

I know they've done well with ticket sales. I'm thinking more about selling the game, drawing media attention, etc.

October 15, 2008  11:27 AM ET

it'd be a good move, we don't need the beckham or blanco, we need someone that control the wing and put the ball in the back of the net, i like this idea

October 15, 2008  11:30 AM ET

plus, no transfer fee! that's probably the biggest selling point

October 15, 2008  12:08 PM ET

kopper- blanco and beckham are bringing all the media attention Seattle needs... yet, even with Blanco in chicago, there is still too small of areas for soccer related articles... it's the leagues responsibilty to get the word out that the league is here to stay, its Seattle's responsibility to produce a quality side who can compete.... i think bringing in 20k+ to every game will bring quite a bit media to itself...

If Seattle needed Freddie to attract more fans...there are bigger issues then.
FJ isn't exactly even well-known celebrity wise. Even die-hard fans might find it hard to go see him play. I probably wouldn't jump to run down to Chicago to see him play.

I don't think it'd be a bad signing. Hopefully he brings his A game.

October 15, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Big Chaco...that's the thing - the way he went about coming over this season - all he is looking for is a paycheck. $1.4 mil for half a season? Come on...all that says is he wants money. He'll leave his A game in Sweden.

October 15, 2008  01:21 PM ET

zizou- we wouldnt need you to run down to chicago to see him play, we would need you to run down to chicago to see chicago play :P

October 15, 2008  01:24 PM ET

they won't give him 1.4 mil for half a season, if the rumor is true theyre trying to use the DP for someone to build around, not a marketable star, it seems like theyre concerned with putting a quality side together, they wont overpay for him (at least, i hope)

now there is a quality arguement against him.... i mentioned it, but never really thought much on the fact that he is merely coming here to get a paycheck....

anyhow i dont see this happening.... any lengthy signing would require more money then he's worth

they should go after fernando torres instead. the weather in seattle is just like liverpool, plus you got a better coffee and music scene. It'd be a great fit.

(im kidding of course)

and Otergod is right, they'd have to way-overpay him to keep Fj for any decent length of time

why? he's currently unemployed (hopefully he's training and not lounging around) and past his prime,
since there will be no transfer fee they could apply some of those savings to his salary, but i don't see why they would have to overpay

I'm sure its more about selling underwear than playing football over here for him....
