Griffey would welcome Cubs move

07:20 AM ET 06.21 | The top of the Cubs' wish list might be a left-handed hitter capable of hitting every day in the middle of the order. Cliff Floyd's health issues could leave just enough doubt to make a deal for a player such as Ken Griffey Jr. look like a fit by the July 31 deadline. Griffey has a history with manager Lou Piniella and is unhappy in Cincinnati, where he was moved from center field to right this year. Not only are the Reds shopping him, but he has said privately to those close to him that he would welcome a move to Chicago.

I can't see this trade being worth it. With the young talent the Cubs already have in the outfield we don't need to pick up a DL proned older outfielder with a salary price like Griffey has just so we can have a left handed hitter in the middle of the lineup. And what a big surprise, Griffey isn't happy somewhere. Wasn't happy in Seattle and wanted to come to Cincy to be close to family. Now he's not happy with being moved to RF. The Reds probably aren't happy with all the time he's spent on DL either but they still stuck with him. He needs to just play RF and shut up. I wouldn't move him back to CF if he came to the Cubbies anyway so he'll still be unhappy with his position. I say the Cubbies let this one go, no desperate need for him at his salary damands. Soriano is the only outfielder that doesn't or can't bat lefthanded anyway so why go after Griffey? Floyd bats Lefty/ Jones bats Lefty/ Pagan is a switch hitter/ Pie bats Lefty...waste of a trade if they go after him.

he`s a great hitter,period... dump Jones, get Griffey...

June 21, 2007  08:53 AM ET

Bob Castellini, the Reds owner, knows Griff sells tickets. Where's he going? No where

June 21, 2007  09:11 AM ET

Defintely get rid of Jones to make room for Griffey. Griffey would probably be more productive on the DL than Jones anyway.

June 21, 2007  09:15 AM ET

This is crap. Griffey is a 10-5 player that is going nowhere. To say that he is unhappy in Cincinnati is completely inaccurate. Sure the Reds are terrible, but Griff is a hometown guy that has found his place of retirement (not yet of course). Keep dreaming Cubbies, KG2 is staying put. Go throw your money at someone else.

June 21, 2007  09:28 AM ET

If Chicago is the world's largest urinal, then I guess St. Louis is the toilet paper the world wipes its **** with.

June 21, 2007  09:46 AM ET

The Mariners traded him to Cincy, because they knew they couldn't sign him to an extension. He signed a below market contract(as possibly the best player in the game at the time) to come and play for his hometown team, so give the guy a break. He hasn't been opening his mouth and complaining like most of these prima donnas do. He's simply gone out and played baseball, and all of his injuries have happened on the field playing the game hard. Griffy is a pro's pro. Do you see him on Sportscenter demanding a trade or saying how bad his team sucks and they need to do something to improve the team or trade him? No. If the Reds trade him and he ok's it I have no problem with that, but doo't knock the guy based on what rumors you hear.

June 21, 2007  09:57 AM ET

Griff is a much better player than people in Cincy like to complain about. It would make much more sense to trade Dunn while he has value and hold on to Griff.

June 21, 2007  10:19 AM ET

Blah, blah, blah- the Cubs are turning more and more into the Yankees all the time. This is getting old already. At least Detroit made it there with unheard of's last year. The Cubs are just trying to buy themselves a pennant... Still...

June 21, 2007  10:32 AM ET

Yeah, St. Louis is the "gateway" city for a reason. People passed right through for a good reason. There's nothing there accept that rediculous looking arch.

June 21, 2007  10:38 AM ET

Junior is a guy who isn't worth the money at this stage. Yes, when he is healthy, he is still a fine offensive player, but average defensive player who clearly has lost a couple of steps. He is never healthy for long stretches, battles hamstring and other problems almost daily. Griffey would be much better suited to return to the American League, where he could give his aching, brittle body a rest by DH-ing and a club could still use his offense. The Cubbies should look elsewhere for more complete, cheaper help. Let's face it, they aren't going anywhere this season, they have more holes than CF, and once they lose Zambrano, they will be further off. Getting a veteran with a huge salary doesn't make much sense, but neither did Ted Lilly for 40 million, so who know....

June 21, 2007  11:09 AM ET

Go to Chicago Griff, but the White Sox not the Cubs. Jermaine Dye for Griffey Jr. Makes sense for the Reds because they'll clear payroll and let Dye walk after the season. And Griffey could hit homers in US Cellular field and be on a traditionally more competitive team. Going to the Cubs would guarantee him he will finish his career without a ring, but the Sox could be different. He'd be with Konerko and Thome, and with Josh Fields coming on they would be one of the elite power hitting teams in baseball again. Plus there was a rumor linking him to the Sox last year, and I know Kenny Williams would want him.

June 21, 2007  11:23 AM ET

Problem is, nobody would welcome Griffey and his contract. Anyone would be an idiot to acquire an injury prone high-paid star. Unless the Reds pay.

Cards Win, you obviously know NOTHING about MLB history. How are you gonna diss Wrigley Field? WRIGLEY FIELD!!!! That place IS baseball history, you **** MONKEY!!! And regardless of baseball, who the hell would prefer living in St. Loser to Chi-Town? I grew up in the Windy City, you've clearly never been there, so don't talk about what you DON'T KNOW!!!

June 21, 2007  11:53 AM ET

That was supposed to be A-S-S M-O-N-K-E-Y!!!

June 21, 2007  11:55 AM ET

Looks like it's time for Hendry to cash in the Josh Hamilton favor.

June 21, 2007  12:05 PM ET

The thing the Cubs need is some bullpen help. Not another outfielder. And why the hell would the Reds wanna get rid of him?

June 21, 2007  12:07 PM ET

Griffey wants to win. I dont understand why he would want to go to the Cubs who CANT win if they had the NL All-Star roster for a team. Plus, if Griffey is going to go anywhere it will more than likely be to an AL team where he can finish his career as a DH. I think he will finish his contract with the Reds and then play a year or two with an American League team hitting DH and re-enforcing his place as one of baseballs greatest players EVER!

June 21, 2007  12:10 PM ET

"Griffey wants to win."

And that's going to happen staying in Cincinnati?

June 21, 2007  12:20 PM ET

Well it sure as hell ain't gonna happen in Chi-town either. Besides, the Reds front office is gonna want Junior to hit his 600th homer in a Reds uniform. If anybody from Cincinnati is gonna get traded, it's Adam Dunn.
