Suns may move Hill to bench
A failed experiment in the playoffs can be costly. A preseason experiment can do no wrong, providing answers for theories. Suns coach Terry Porter tested the idea of starting Matt Barnes at small forward in place of Grant Hill, playing Barnes with the first team in the past two practices. Porter did not commit to starting Barnes Wednesday night at Atlanta but the idea has been up for debate since the summer. It is Porter's only lineup decision until he settles on an eight- or nine-man rotation in next week's final three preseason games. Barnes already is fulfilling what the Suns envisioned in July when they made their surprise bargain acquisition (one-year minimum deal of $926,678). Barnes is a basketball transformer with the athleticism and versatility to play and guard wings or power forwards, because, at 6 feet 7, he can defend, rebound and shoot.

I think the Suns will be dangerous. Their older but wiser. They do have some young guys from the bench and some veterans. Porter will hopefully transform this team into a better defensive team. Offense is always there and they still have so many options.

See, now this is a guy who won't mind coming off the bench for the benefit of his team. Grant Hill has always been a class act in this league...unlike Marbury.

Grant Hill is a class guy but at this point of his career he is a sixth man at best. He's not a starter.

Sadly, he hasn't been much of a starter since he started having ankle problems in Orlando... He would've been the best at that position in NBA history if his numbers maintained and he didn't lose a step and several seasons to a bum ankle. He'll be a solid contributor, but his body worn beyond his years.

Shame he got hurt, he had the potential to be one of the greatest ever. He should come off the bench now.

He should indeed come off the bench, and initiate the offense when Nash needs a rest. The offense went through him when he was in Detroit, Suns should try the same with him. In other words, he needs the ball more in his hands, and the only way that is going to happen is playing with te second unit.

As a fan of the Orlando Magic this is what will happen. They will start the season with some gimmick to limit Hill's minutes (come off the bench, don't play on back to backs, play every other quarter, etc, etc) then as the season progresses they will realize that the team is much better with him on the court.
They will realize they need him to play big minutes to be a winner, they will rely on him to be there at the end of the season, in the playoffs, and he won't, and they'll fail.

Agreed-
he is a facilitator......no reason (at this stage of his career)
to have him on the court when Nash is running the show
& you have a beached whale in the paint- let him play
with he 2nd unit to give nash more time to rest-

One of the best character guys I can remember to play in the league. While not a Suns fan I would enjoy seeing him get a chance at a ring. Hopefully he can remain healthy. I just think the Suns are fading, interested to see without Dantoni how much they run...or will they scale it back considerably. My guess is with Nash they will still like to play up-tempo as much as possible.

Good move for sure, Matt Barnes is no Shawn Marion at defense, but gives them a better over all defender at that position. With Hill coming off the bench, gives the 2nd-team guys something to get energized about and Hill can bring his court smarts to that squad instead of competing against one of the top trios in the NBA starting lineups.

Grant already played with the Suns last year. He played big minutes (32 min per game )all year under D'Antoni, like the other 6 players in the rotation, and then was injured for the playoffs. Go figure.
This year, he will play just 20-25 min per whether he comes off the bench or starts. No gimmicks. Matt Barnes will play a huge role in the allowing the Suns to limit Hill's minutes all year. To D'Antoni's credit, only Diaw or rookie Alando Tucker were available as a backup SF last year.

It's too bad that injuries robbed Hill of what should have been his best years. I agree with HOVA. At this point in his career, it's time to step aside.

Hill should thrive coming off the bench against opponents' second line players.

Grant Hill will do what it takes to win, period, so i am sure he would have no problems coming off the bench.

Given his ankle issues it is a prudent idea at this stage of his carreer...
As for Marbury he is too blind to see the Knicks are trying to make him irrelevant.. they will pin him to the point where he will say something dumb and get suspended the rest of the year... the Knicks can sure do without him...
Grant Hill on the other hand is the definition of skill and character. I wish him nothing but the best..

The Lakers and Suns can help each other with a trade of Odom for one or more of Grant Hill, Barnes, or Raja Bell. The Lakers need a shooting guard with size and agility, and the Suns need a frontcourt player who is a big man, yet can pass and run.
Unfortunately, the Lakers and Suns are rivals and will back off from this trade because each side does not want the other side to benefit, even if it will benefit itself!

Agreed - I think the Suns get better with Hill on the floor with their 2nd unit. He will bring experience, leadership & direction.

Yeah it's a shame that so much of Hill's playing career was marred by injuries.
Hill is the definition of team player, one who willdo whatever is best for his team mates and coach.
I think Hill (so long as he doesn't go down injured) can have a bigger positive impact for the Suns than his fellow draftee over in Dallas.

Good idea Jay L. But you also forgot to mention the only way LA trades for Hill is for Luke Walton. They don't have to give away important pieces to get All Star quality players. Oh hang on, I forgot, the Suns aren't the Grizzlies.
