Nets want more aggressive Lopez

Brook Lopez has shown a shooter's mid-range touch. But the Nets are trying to channel another side of Lopez on the court. An aggressive, forceful inside side. "Just aggressive, it doesn't have to be outlandish or anything," said Vince Carter, who began squeezing that aspect out of Lopez when he got in the rookie's ear Sunday in London. Lopez went up and seemed to avoid contact. Carter told him next time to stuff it. Stuff the basketball - and the genteel attitude. "He told me to go up and dunk it. He just kind of changed my mentality a bit," said Lopez who admitted he assumed a more aggressive tone after that second quarter incident. "Defensively, too, I was just trying to rebound everything, trying to go out there and be aggressive." When a veteran says it in your ear, a veteran with a body of work like Carter, you tend to listen, remember and implement. The words hit home.

He's a rookie, give him some time.

Vince said that. Who wants to listen to you, Mr. Only Dunk but no game at all.

Looks like a bust to me.

I can't believe it is Vince Carter that told Lopez to be more aggressive. Come on Carter, we haven't seen you dunk the ball for ages. You have been a 3 point shooter since you signed the big contract. Get it done yourself first before you teach any one else.

Anyway, Brook Lopez can be another Nesterovic

Right on the money!

VY is just reminding the rookie that big man down low should power their plays. Lopez will just be defensive and rebounding center. Offense would just be extras.

Lopez will be fine he needs to get as built as Dwight Howard though.

October 16, 2008  10:17 AM ET

The Nets are rebuilding. They just don't know it yet. They'll know by mid-season.

October 16, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Laughable. What's next, George W marching in peace rallies and driving a hybrid?

October 16, 2008  11:29 AM ET

Pretty lame. How can Carter possibly open his mouth on this subject? He is king of the slouches.

Lopez is my pick to make a lot of teams (Seattle, Minnesota, Charlotte and others) regret passing on him. He'll only get better.

why is this a story?
all a 7 footer SHOULD be doing is banging & dunking....

October 16, 2008  01:52 PM ET

vince who??? (note the lower case)... vince carter is the last person who should talk about being aggressive. Now if you want to teach someone to play soft, make the highlight reel every night (ie win the battle, lose the war), then vince is your man.

No one should be listening to vince carter. Listen to your coach, assistants, team-mates, therapists, anybody... but not vince carter.

This is funny... It's like Marbury telling someone to keep his mouth shut...

October 16, 2008  02:49 PM ET

why would anyone listen to carter? first he said dunking is overrated. then he says hes never dunking anymore. then he dunks the next game. then he pretends to be injured to leave the Raptors.. and traded for alonzo mourning who didnt even take one step in toronto becuase he thinks the team is too garbage.
and now he listen to carter? this kid is a rookie. its gonna take him some time. he has to understand. VC has to understand u cant expect a rookie who is new to the style of play to play like a 7 year veteran. geez. not every rookie to get rook of the year like him. give me a break

I like both the Lopez twins( Robin is in Phoenix). It seems they are very well grounded which should bode well for their future developement.

Has there ever been a set of twins to do really well in the NBA? I know the Collins twin are in the league but anyone else? Just curious.

October 16, 2008  04:48 PM ET

Give the kid some time he will get the point and play harder as the season goes on.

Wow, perhaps, I am too young, I have to admit I have no idea who they are. Or I am just way too oblivious.

HOLLYWOOD, I am surprised no Oden fanatics are on here screaming at you for making a strong statement like that on Lopez and not on their idol, Oden..hahaha, that's just funny.
