USC's McKnight out against WSU

Tailback Joe McKnight overcame several injuries and ailments during nearly 1 1/2 seasons at USC to play in 18 consecutive games. But the sophomore from Louisiana, who had a career-best rushing performance last week against Arizona State, said Wednesday that he probably would not play Saturday against struggling Washington State because of a toe injury.

Looks like the Cougars have a chance at the upset!

October 16, 2008  08:56 AM ET

I think USC could leave the entire first team at home and still cruise

October 16, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Unfortunately, Stafon will get more carries because of this. He was deserving of more carries anyway, but the politics at Tailback U continue to be played.

October 16, 2008  11:38 AM ET

He will not be missed, seriously, they don't need him.

October 16, 2008  11:38 AM ET

against Wazzou.

If there is ever a game to take off, this is it.

I agree with Arejaydub that Stafon deserves more carries. I personally think he should carry the load right now, similar to Lendale White, and then let McKnight and Gable be the change of pace/homerun hitter type

"Fight, fight, fight for Washington State! Win the victory! Win the day for Crimson and Gray! Best in the West, we know you'll all do your best, so on, on, on, on! Fight to the end! Honor and Glory you must win! So fight, fight, fight for Washington State and victory!"

My post is more honoring Tom Tuttle (from Tacoma) than it is USC-haterism.

Politics? I guess that you have an inside track on these "politics" at USC, because us Trojans don't know what the heck you are talking about. It is simple - whoever plays best in practice gets carries in the game. Carroll has been quite clear about this from day 1.

Make 1 million dollars..............make a shoe that prevents toe injury. Mr. Horse is correct.

Did you attend camp last year? Stafon by far, had the best camp of anyone, yet was relegated to coming off the bench. He had a great camp this year, although Pete said Bradford had the best. What did that do for Bradford? McNair doesn't like Stafon and Gable's his boy. It's very obvious who the best RB is and I'm sorry that you cannot see this. Perhaps you like some of the other guys better PERSONALLY, too.

All we Trojan fans know that anything can happen to anybody--the last time we were 40 point favorites, we choked. Having said that, however... Wazzu's got about as much chance as a slug against a steamroller. I've been thinking about this game and actually hoping that Maualuga and Cushing don't hurt the poor WSU quarterback. How'd YOU like to be the middling ex-high school quarterback who one day says, "What the heck? I'll try out for the scout team" and then halfway through the first quarter you have to take snaps opposite the Trojan defense?

October 16, 2008  01:05 PM ET

Jamesbt,

The kid who made the scout team will never find his way onto the field. First off, I can't believe Lupina is going to play against USC only a month after fracturing a vertebrae in his spine. If he goes down again (I bet he will) backup punter Wagner would take over. If he gets hurt our safety, Hicks, who was a good duel threat QB in high school would move to the QB position. In reality it doesnt matter who we start, USC's 3rd string could still blowout our 1st.

My prediction for the game USC 87- WSU 3

October 16, 2008  01:09 PM ET

Politics aside, this shouldn't be a problem for the Trojans. I don't think they'll cover the 42 point spread, but missing McKnight shouldn't keep them from winning.

October 16, 2008  01:13 PM ET

I think USC feels they have something to prove for the rest of the season. Lots of people are questioning them, they will put it on us.... I will be there to watch...nothing better than Cougar Football Saturday's even when we are the worst team in the country. At Washington State you are a Coug for life...we are one big family.

I feel like McKnight is the most overrated back in the country. USC will have a lot more success playing a different back...and we will see that come this weekend. McKnight tries to run to east and west way to much in my opinion. Weak runner, but fast.

Thanks for the confidence in the cougs. Just for your reference...here is how our pac10 games have gone this season to teams inferior to USC (minus OSU?).

CAL 66- WSU 3
Oregon 63- WSU 14
UCLA 28- WSU 3
OSU 66 - WSU 13

At the least USC will score over 60. I hope we at least get on the board. We have the second longest scoring streak in the nation behind Michigan.

October 16, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Good chance for him to rest up. I'm looking forward to a great 1-2 punch of stafon and CJ. They are the two overall best rbs in the stable. If we expect a big blowout and a lot of running in the 4th Q, these two will get some good reps!
Fight On!

SC could roll up 87 against this team, but that is not PC's style. They'll be passing a lot, looking forward to seeing some of the younger guys getting reps in the defensive backfield this week, a la TJ Bryant who almost returned that int for a TD.

The only problem...

he's the worst blocker of the whole bunch.

If you can't block, you don't get to carry the rock. Ask Todd McNair about that.

October 16, 2008  02:27 PM ET

I miss that 1-2 punch... Seems Sark is trying to get too fancy sometimes. Doesn't he realize he has the best backfield in CF. I mean 6-7 yards per carry... Ain't nothing wrong with that!

Great to see a true freshman get a pick even if it was in the 4th quarter.

Fight On Trojans!

zY, you're a credit to college football fandom. I've been a Trojan fan since as far as I can remember (one of my earliest memories is watching Anthony Davis return the second half kickoff for a touchdown against Notre Dame at the start of that famous comeback), and nothing riles me more than the rabid but fairweather Trojan fans that have arisen in their recent string of dominance. These people were nowhere when we lost to Notre Dame 12 years in a row. And it's good to see you both rooting for and even analyzing your Cougars even when they are in such a state. Thanks for the info on the actual QB situation. I agree about Lupina. Shouldn't Wulff be looking out for him? Don't you think he should say, "Look kid I know why you want to play but you just freaking broke your back"?

After the Oregon State game. Scott Wolf (L.A. Daily News), informed Todd McNair that SC fans were clamoring for Stafon to get more carries. He asked McNair if Stafon would get more carries. Without answering the question, McNair responded that if Gable had been given the same carries, SC fans would be crying for C.J. to get more. That's some hating, if you can read between the lines. I saw Stafon make a key block for Sanchez in the Ohio State game and a few others as well. That's a weak excuse for not playing the guy and it doesn't wash with me or the alumni.
