MLBPA: Evidence teams froze out Bonds

06:34 AM ET 10.17 | The baseball players' union says it has found evidence teams acted in concert against signing Barry Bonds, but it reached an agreement with the commissioner's office to delay the filing of any grievance. The union expressed concern in May about the lack of offers to the home run king. Filing a grievance would trigger proceedings before arbitrator Shyam Das. Bonds was indicted last Nov. 15 on charges related to 2003 grand jury testimony during which he denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs. No team signed Bonds when he became a free agent after the 2007 season.

Whether you justify it or think it was wrong to do so (which I do) this should come as no surprise to anyone.

October 17, 2008  07:00 AM ET

It would be the first time in history that all of the owners of MLB teams agreed on the same thing. Maybe, just maybe, no one wanted to sign a player with all that baggage? He would have wanted big money. Not worth it.

October 17, 2008  07:06 AM ET

I agree, 50yearfan.

October 17, 2008  07:25 AM ET

Agreed, not collusion as much as a coincidence if you ask me

October 17, 2008  07:52 AM ET

What is interesting to me, is that the union held the greviance. They realize he isn't good for baseball either. They are doing this to prevent it from happening to others. They don't care about Barry. Whether or not it is collusion, well, that isn't the story to me. Its that the union basically agrees with the owners on Barry, but not necessarily with the way they went about it for other players,.

They HELD OFF because they didn't want to overshadow the World Series, you dolts. The greivance will be filed in a couple weeks. And yes, MLB knows their in trouble or they wouldn't have bothered negotiating an agreement for this to be held off.

October 17, 2008  08:41 AM ET

Why is it collusion if teams don't want the biggest distraction in history in their clubhouse? Forget about numbers, this guy brings NOTHING but misery and controversy to any team he plays for, so I call it smart managing to say "thanks, but no thanks" to Lord Barry and his Massive Ego.

hmm.. dolt. I like that. Well, if you read the article, then it would seem as if they waited half the season to not overshadow the season? And, do you really think the Union gives a crap about the World Series? It would just bring the issue to light better. No, its because they will get no sympathy from fans, players or management. they are holding it because they don;t want to look bad. They will wait till the offseason either to have the news cycle to themselves, or to allow it to be buried.

what i dont understand is: why is the MLBPA even concidering helping Barry Bonds who isn't even a member of the MLBPA??

October 17, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Great question TommyC80. Also, if I own a team, I should reserve the right to hire who I want and when I want. I don't want to bring race into this, but this goes right along with the NFL's Rooney Rule, where teams MUST interview minority applicants. To me, thats illegal since teams are not owned by the NFL ( And yes, I am quite aware of the league bylaws that teams are obligated to meet) it is also an insult to minority applicants who will get interviewed just out of obligation.

Newsflash- Barry is a self-centered egomaniac who's better days of production are behind him.

That is a good question too.

The owner's didn't conspire to keep him out. They just didn't want to pay an old, no defense playing, distration loaded, primadonna attitude, indicted for roids player the big bucks he would ask for. Had he been willing to play for a 1-year low cost contract, I am sure someone would have picked him up.

i was thinking the same thing. Barry says "no I won't sign with you, I want to market myself" but then all of a sudden "I need your help". I would tell him to screw off, we have no reason to work for you since, in a way, you didn't work for us.....can't have it both ways Barry...now stay in retirement and fade into oblivion....

JUST FADE BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Barry got what Barry deserved... he has burnt bridges, talked smack and what did it get him, sitting on couch, watching sportscenter

October 17, 2008  09:41 AM ET

FINALLY! We all knew it was collusion all along. He can still hit better than 90% of all ML hitters. The CUBS might still be in it if they had a GREAT left-handed hitter in their lineup. So might the Angels. FIRE AWAY!

They will help him to make sure that it doesn't happen to their other members. Also, if they were that concerned about HIM, they would have filed already.

he offered to play for free pretty much offering his salary to charity. but i'm glad no one signed him. it was obvisouly to just reach 3000 hits and add yet another suspect record to his list of questionable accomplishments. i think barry has accepted that he just isn't wanted anymore and should just fade away

I spoke too soon on the other thread...here it is.
B*nds...

October 17, 2008  10:24 AM ET

It was not collusion...but they may pay his cheatin butt anyway, so long as he shuts his mouth and goes away, he is a cancer to the sport and a big giant reminder of all that is wrong with sport...
