Steinbrenner: Joba will be starter in '09

Yankees honchos gathered at George M. Steinbrenner Field yesterday in Tampa. When the afternoon session was over, co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner said one of the first off-season decisions was that Joba Chamberlain will be used as a starter next year. Steinbrenner said that before last year, but Chamberlain opened in the bullpen, was converted to a starter for 12 games, suffered a shoulder problem and finished the season in the bullpen with a tight right shoulder. Strengthening the rotation is the Yankees' top priority and many believe Chamberlain possesses ace-like stuff.

Good to see they're not trying to put pressure on him and burn him out! At this rate, he'll end up becoming the next Kerry Wood.

October 17, 2008  08:23 AM ET

i dont understand this. Yes, he has the ability to be an ace....but he is more durable and effective coming out of the pen.

October 17, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Kind of ironic given this is the Yankees. I mean, they had Goose Gossage who really made being a reliever cool. And then took it to the HOF. The voices in my head have always told me:

"TRUTH, stay with the broad ya brought to the dance"

Joba could be the next Papelnuts for the Yankees. He has the mentality like Johnny Paps (nothing much going on betwix the ears), killer instinct, and a blazing fastball.

Joba the Hutt should become Joba the Closer, IMRSO.

i gotta agree. with him and Mo you've effectively shortened the game to 6 innings. we'll see....still never too late to move him to the pen during the season; unless of course he gets hurt pitching every 5th day

October 17, 2008  09:32 AM ET

well i think it was done wrong last year, starting him as a 8th inning guy and then going to a starter really messed with his arm and pitching.. coming in to spring training will be much easier for him to make starts... JOBA is great and he will be an ACE

October 17, 2008  10:15 AM ET

oh good. At least now his arm will come completely unhinged by the All Star break and we won't have to hear from the yankee masses about the plethora of young talent that Joba will be leading into pinstripes.

October 17, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Nothing is proven about his durability as a starter, his injury may or may not have been due to being jerked around last year.
I want this guy as an ace...hopefully he will be an ace...he and CC in the playoffs next year...1-2...that is my dream...

Whats funny is that some Yankee fans were saying he was better than Tim Lincecum early last year. I doubt any of those people will come out of their caves any longer.

October 17, 2008  10:50 AM ET

for now. half way through the year when they cant get to mariano cuz theyre blowing games in the 8th he'll be moved back to the pen i guarentee it.

October 17, 2008  10:56 AM ET

Finally. Just let the man pitch. These pitch and innings limits are bogus. Lester is something like 80 innings past where he was last year and he looks fine. So are a few other starters so maybe analysts jumped the gun when they tried to link injuries to increase in innings from year to year. The guy has too much talent to be in the pen.

Hi lou...he is not better now, but he sure looked good last year, he is still a little raw but he has the potential to be better and a more traditional throwing motion than Lincecum, Lincecum is a season away from being Dontrel...that may take some season though...

It didn'y happen this year, why would it happen next year...i am not following that.

Yankee pen was solid all year. There was no problem getting the ball to Mo so not sure what team you were watching. And the Yanks are bringing back almost all of the bullpen for 2009 so should be fine. Guys in the pen are there because they don't have 3-4 good pitches so they can't be a starter or they lack the stamina to go 6 innings or more. Joba has 4 good pitches and has the endurance so why would you waste that by having him sit in the pen. In 12 starts he gave up 3 runs or less 11 times and the one time where he gave up 5 was the game he left with an injury. He is an ace in the making and I'll stand by that.

October 17, 2008  11:33 AM ET

what's the over/under on Joba getting injured again now

Well if they let him start the year in spring training as a starter and keep him there all year instead of jer king him around like they did this year hopefully he is fine. I mean Lester has thrown 80 innings more than he did in 2007 and he looks fine for the Sox so I think people buy into that inings limits nonsense a little too much.

Probably the same as on any other pitcher...

i agree that the bullpen did a better than expected job during the second half of the season but for me the tune has changed a little bit because of the arm trouble. it just didn't start this past season it goes back to when he was in college. i believe that a power pitcher has only so many pitches in his arm. joba to me has shown a tendency to get hurt. limiting his innings i think would increase his longevity. if i didn't think he was gonna be injury prone then without a doubt he should be in the rotation

October 17, 2008  11:45 AM ET

BC and Allstarz, I am with you guys. He is a starter and has the potential to be a great one. His stuff is nasty. I think once he starts throwing first ball strikes he will be much more dominant.

Plus if the Yankees offense was anywhere near what it should have been, pitching would not be such a hot topic and we would be watching them still playing.
