Yankees, Braves chasing Peavy
The Yankees are one of several teams that have had preliminary discussions with the San Diego Padres about a possible trade for 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy. According to a person familiar with the substance of Thursday's organizational meetings in Tampa, Peavy was a hot topic as word has begun to circulate around baseball that the Padres are interested in shopping Peavy. The person said the Yankees had a feeling the Padres might be further down the road in discussions with other teams, such as the Atlanta Braves. And even a very strong offer might not be enough to get Peavy, since his contract includes a no-trade clause. But if the Yankees decided to make young pitchers such as Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy available, they believe they could put together an attractive package for the Padres to at least consider.

The Yankees are chasing everyone. Or so it seems according to FN and their sources. This one would make sense for them though since it's a pitcher.

Hughes and Kennedy? They have a lot less value than they did a year ago.

No doubt. The fellas in that organizational meeting are aware that despite the fact that both pitchers started the season in the rotation, they combined for 73.2 innings, a 7.45 ERA and an 0-8 reccord, right?
Based on 2008, if you sewed Hughes and Kennedy together, you'd have one really **** relief pitcher.

i don't think this will happen for the yanks. peavy has made clear he wants to stay in the national league and not to mention i think atl would be closer to home for him. but man, would he be an excellent pick up for the yanks.....i'll keep dreamin!!

No chance the Padres would even take a deal for Kennedy AND Hughes. Last year, with those two coming up to the bigs, their farm system looked pretty strong. Now with the issues they had last year, the farm system looks weak. I think the Yankees would probably have to give up Austin Jackson, Kennedy/Hughes, and a major league player like Melky/Edwar Ramirez. I don't see it happening. Especially because Peavy wants to stay in the NL.

The Yankees would be giving up to much. I still didnt give up on Hughes. I think he can be good if he is healthy and can stay Healthy. He's only turning 22 or is 22. He shows signs of being a very good pitcher. Both of them started the season in the rotation having alot of burden on there shoulders. We seen established pitchers come to NY and break down from the pressure. Having two young guys being part of your rotation and expecting greatness from them was to much right away. They have to be worked into the role. Hughes showed toughness i think in the 07 game. But he was j ust hurt. Kenndy I think couldnt handle the pressure right away. But back to your comment I think thats to much for Peavy who hasnt pitched in the AL. They have CC, AJ, and Lowe as free Agent I think you go for that and try to sign one atleast and trade for a decent pitcher that can eat innings. I more big on Lowe then AJ since he's hurt to much. Lowe already pitched in the AL against the Yankees in big spots. I think it was game 7 in 04 when he came up big!! Plus he's innings eater.

He would actually make sense for the Yankees, it's obviously their biggest weakness. But I still think it would take more than those 2, maybe Melky or a package of prospects? You can't really tell how desperate they are yet

one game doesn't make a pitcher, the next year(last season) he was on better then a AAA pitcher that should stay in AAA.... kennedy well he should have stayed in college, i don't ever want to see that guy in Pinstripes ever again.

From now until the start of spring training expect to hear that every single player to be either traded/signed by the Yankees at some point or another. Must be a slow news days so the writers are going with the standard template of "[Insert Team Here] is chasing/looking at/will trade/will sign [Insert Name of Player Here].

This is a good move for the Yankees. Give up the useless talent that they wouldnt give up for Johan Santana last year. BUT do it for a guy who breaks a rib during a celebration and is starting to resemble Kerry Woods with the physician visits.
