Bowden: Brother got what he deserved

Amid the clamor suggesting Clemson's Tommy Bowden got what he deserved in making college football's earliest coaching exit since 2003 came a rather intriguing voice from the wilderness. His brother. "He deserved it because he, of all people, knew what to expect when he got into this business," Terry Bowden wrote in his weekly Yahoo.com comments. Hmmm, might be interesting around Ann Bowden's table at the next family get-together. Terry explained that growing up as the sons of Bobby Bowden, it became clear early on that there's an expectation of success that must be met. And that never happened at Clemson. In four of the past five seasons, the Tigers have spun their wheels at eight or nine wins. Some years they started out slow and finished fast. In others, they started fast and staggered. Saddled as the favorite in a weak ACC this year, an opening loss to Alabama was compounded by stumbles vs. Maryland and Wake Forest. "Clemson expects to win the conference championship every once in a while -- and they should," Terry Bowden said. "After 10 years of falling short, they deserve the right to try and find a coach they believe can get them there."

Talk about brotherly love! These guys should be caoshing in Phily.

I guess blood is not that thick after all.

October 17, 2008  08:03 AM ET

Sounds like Tommy is still bitter about his own firing.

October 17, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Terry is spot on.

October 17, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Nice Terry, by the way, how is your team doing this year? Oh, sorry. Lets fast forward to 5 years from now, or 5 months, who gives a damn?

This isn't surprising. After Clemson got rolled by Bama, Terry wrote a scathing damnation on how badly prepared and coached the Clemson team was.

At least the midget realized that coaching wasn't for him.

October 17, 2008  09:37 AM ET

BTW -- in reading the article, they noted "similarities," specifically "Both schools appointed former Alabama assistants as interim coach ??? Bill Oliver taking over for Terry, Dabo Swinney for Tommy."

Somehow, I don't think Swinney was backstabbing Tommy the same way Bill Oliver was with Terry. Oliver was gunning to be the full-tiime coach, got bumped up to AD when Tubberville was hired - then tried to stab Tubbs in the backwith the 'Jetgate' near-hiring of Petrino.

Not quite comparable there.

While Terry Bowden may be correct in his assessment, that's a pretty ugly thing to do to your own brother. My guess is that Mama Bowden will NOT be too happy about this...

October 17, 2008  10:30 AM ET

Spoiled rich kids not watching either others back. I am glad my brothers don't act like this. What a dysfunctional family!

October 17, 2008  10:30 AM ET

while his statements appear harsh. they are true. and both brothers understand that. its well within reason to assume that tommy should have at least brought them a conf championship if not multiple in a so so football conf as the acc.......its unacceptable in today's world of big time college athletics. as far as his statments, we don't know the relationship these guys have or what's already been said between them. will his statements prevent him from getting another job....seriously doubt it. tommy knows its all part of the game......i'm willing to bet that no feelings got hurt

October 17, 2008  10:50 AM ET

Tommy probably got the job partly by being a Bowden. Who knows maybe being a head coach ain't his strong suit. Just because he's a Bowden don't mean he can coach. Also remeber the 85 scholarship limmit has evened things up some. I for one would like to see the NCAA drop the limit to 80 and then you would see alot more paraity (SP) in the game. That would still leave them with 3 deep on both sides of the ball on scholarship and 14 to play with. Then you would see who the ones are that can coach and recruit really are.

I am still waiting on a DNA test to prove that to me after watching him coach for almost 10 years.

My bro's a crappy high school baseball coach . I let him know every chance I get. It's the way of the world.

Funny Stuff.

Sorry, but I don't see the big deal here. If he would have said it about another coach, then he should say it about his brother....it is part of his job and he is supposed to be impartial. It's not like he said "my brother sucks"....he said that he knew what he was getting into when he became a coach...if you don't win, then you get fired. I wish the Lions would do that with Marianelli.

I hear ya-
but that is in PRIVATE.....

This is public. it is a D ! c k move.

What a loving family. Hell all three (father and two sons) have coached and perpetuated a mentality of cockiness and unsportsmanlike playing with their teams. So now the father is left...of course Senor Bowden is a fixture, God whatever at FSU...let's see when he goes.

We want more Joe Pas in the game. People that care about their players and the game and coach with a passion and a vision.

October 17, 2008  12:22 PM ET

Since when does Terry Bowden know anything about coaching?

Tommy knows he should be out at Clemson. Everyone knows Tommy should be out at Clemson. But why does Terry need to chime in? For that matter, does anyone even read Terry's "Blog" about college football? I thought he was only good at butchering being a studio analyst and being the 9th most talented person named Bowden in any city he happens to be in.

Seems kind of over the top to pile on your brother in public. Would expect to her Tommy be more critical of the Clemson administration, lack of fan support, etc. Not to dump on his brother.
